The Dragon Kings' Forbidden Witch

Chapter 92: Magic Lesson With Atheris

Not brightly, but visibly. A faint luminescence was radiating from her skin, particularly visible in her hands and at her center. The light was golden and crimson, flowing like liquid through her veins, visible just beneath the surface of her skin.

"This is what you are," Atheris said, and his voice was almost gentle. "This is what you contain. This is the truth that the palace cannot accept. This is why you must be hidden there. Not because you are weak or broken, but because you are powerful beyond their comprehension."

Morgana looked at her glowing hands with something close to wonder.

"How long can I maintain this?" she asked softly.

"As long as you wish," Atheris said. "It requires no effort once you have found the center point. It is not exhausting. It is simply the natural state of one who has learned to master their magic."

"Will others be able to see it?" Morgana asked. "In the palace, if I try this...."

"In the palace, you will not try this," Atheris said firmly. "This is not palace magic. This is only for here, in the safety of this cave, where you can be fully yourself. But knowing that you can access it, knowing that this power exists within you....that knowledge will change how you move through the world. That knowledge will be your strength."

He paused.

"But there is more to learn," he said. "And we have limited time before dawn forces you to return."

Atheris moved away from her, backing toward the center of the vast cave, the chains singing softly with his movement.

"The meditation centers you," he said. "It allows you to access your power without fear. Now you will learn to shape that power. You will learn to give it form and purpose and direction."

He settled into a comfortable position, his massive body coiling slightly, his golden eyes fixed on Morgana with absolute intensity.

"Watch," he said.

He opened his mouth, and from deep within his chest, words emerged. But they were not words in any language that Morgana recognized. They were older, deeper, seeming to vibrate with power that was almost physical.

"Suratha vel’nimara... ashent’core vel’maina... drakon’vel ashent’fire..."

As the words were spoken, the air in the cave itself seemed to thicken. Magic became visible, swirling around Atheris in patterns of gold and crimson and deep, dark red. The very stone of the cave seemed to respond, humming with resonance, and the chains sang in harmony with his words.

And then fire emerged.

Not from his mouth, but from the air around him. Flames shaped themselves into forms.....circles of pure fire, spheres of crimson and gold, intricate patterns that hung suspended in the air like frozen art.

Morgana watched, transfixed, as Atheris shaped and reshaped the fire with simple gestures and shifts in his tone. He created a bird made of flame, its wings spread wide, every feather perfectly defined. He created a river of fire that flowed through the air without falling, defying gravity through sheer force of will. He created geometric patterns of impossible complexity, mathematical precision combined with artistic beauty.

And then, with a gesture, he dismissed it all. The fire dissolved into sparks that fell like stars throughout the cave, fading before they hit the stone.

"This is fire shaping," Atheris said. "The fire is not separate from you. It is not something you create from nothing and then struggle to control. It is an extension of your will. It is a part of yourself given physical form. To master it, you must understand it as an extension of your own being."

He gestured for Morgana to come closer.

She rose and approached him, her heart pounding with anticipation and fear.

"You will try," Atheris said. "You will use the meditation to center yourself. You will use these words to call the fire. And you will learn to shape it."

He taught her the words.

"Suratha vel’nimara... ashent’core vel’maina..."

She repeated them, her voice small and uncertain in the vastness of the cave.

At first, nothing happened.

She tried again, putting more intention into the words, drawing on the meditation she had learned, feeling for the magic that dwelt within her.

The second attempt produced a small flame, barely more than a candle’s worth of fire. It appeared in the air before her, dancing gently, waiting for direction.

Atheris made a sound of approval.

"Again," he said. "Larger this time. Give it form."

Morgana tried again. This time, she felt the magic responding more easily, flowing through her with less resistance. She spoke the words with more confidence, and the fire responded, growing larger, forming into a shape, a simple sphere at first, then gradually becoming more complex.

She created a circle of flame. Then she made it spin, faster and faster, until it was a whirlwind of pure fire, rotating in the air before her. She shaped it into a bird, and the bird flew in a loop around her, its wings perfect, its movements graceful.

Then, with a thought, she dismissed it, watching the sparks fall like stars.

"Good," Atheris said. "You are a natural. The magic flows through you with less resistance than it does through most carrier of fire."

Over the next hours, as the night gradually began to shift toward dawn, Atheris taught her to shape fire in increasingly complex patterns. She created rivers of flame that flowed upward, defying gravity. She created designs of mathematical precision....spirals and tessellations and fractal patterns. She created images, a dragon, a horse, a crown, a sword.

And each time, Atheris offered gentle corrections, showed her subtle ways to improve, encouraged her to push her boundaries further.

By the time they paused for rest, Morgana was exhausted but exhilarated in a way that she had never experienced before.

"There is more," Atheris said, once Morgana had recovered somewhat from the intensity of the fire shaping training.

"I’m not sure I can...." Morgana began, but Atheris cut her off gently.

"You can," he said. "And you must. This magic is perhaps more useful to you now than the fire shaping, though less satisfying."

He gestured for her to sit before him once more, settling herself into a meditative posture.

"In the palace," Atheris said, "you must move unseen. Not invisible....invisibility draws attention, creates questions. But unremarkable. Forgettable. The kind of person that people’s eyes slide past without truly seeing."
