"Regarding anything to do with the child, as parents, we must treat it with caution." Liu Banxia said.
"So initially, when you chose not to let your child be seen as a monster, I agreed. Now, considering giving the child a cochlear implant, you must think through all the problems thoroughly."
"As doctors, we only have a certain level of recommendation authority. We can provide you with some methods and the potential outcomes of using them."
"But the final decision still needs to be made by you. If you haven’t thought it through and simply rely on our recommendation without fully understanding it, you might regret it in the future."
"Now, the fracture in Shanshan is fixed. You should take him for an imaging scan. Then observe him in our hospital for a while. If you’re interested, I can call our ENT specialist to reassess Shanshan’s hearing."
"Okay, thank you, doctor, I’ll take Shanshan for the scan now." Shanshan’s father said gratefully.
He felt Liu Banxia was genuinely considering things from his perspective. Although he suggested the cochlear implant for Shanshan, the intention was different.
As he took Shanshan for the scan, Liu Yiqing and Xu Yino were eyeing Liu Banxia.
"Why are you both staring at me like that? Things should be tidied up. Are you waiting for me to clean up?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Oh, right, we need to clean up. There are still patients outside." Liu Yiqing hurriedly said.
"Qingqing, you shouldn’t give in so easily." Xu Yino said.
"We’ve both been used to play the bad guys, while he plays the good guy. Didn’t you see how the child’s father treated him like a good friend when he left?"
"But I feel it’s okay. As long as he agrees to give the child a cochlear implant, that’s a success, regardless of the method."
"Look, Little Liu’s attitude is proper." Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"Neither of you has truly considered the child’s father’s situation over these years. Compared to the child, he has faced too much pressure."
"He has to explain Shanshan’s situation to others and why he hasn’t given Shanshan a cochlear implant. Otherwise, everyone would see him as a bad father like we did."
"Now that he’s finally figured it out, why can’t we cheer him on?" Xu Yino said, unconvinced.
"Has he really figured it out? He’s simply moved by what I said." Liu Banxia replied.
"So any decision he makes now is impulsive. My concern isn’t about being blamed in the future, but about his self-reproach."
"Didn’t you notice this through Yuan Yuan’s situation? Dalei and his wife are filled with guilt. As parents, they want what’s best for their child."
"The hardest part to bear is when their decisions or actions harm their child. He needs time to think calmly, so the decision made is truly his own."
"We keep emphasizing giving patients autonomy. This isn’t about life-or-death, so our role is only advisory. The surgery isn’t complex, but it affects the child’s entire life and family."
"It could have a positive impact, or it could be negative because we can’t predict future outcomes."
Xu Yino and Liu Yiqing listened intently, finally understanding Liu Banxia’s intention.
Indeed, respecting patients’ and their families’ choices is always emphasized.
Yet today, they were somewhat presumptuous.
With cochlear implant surgery, all the publicity is positive. So they assumed if a deaf child could get the implant, it must be done, for the child’s benefit.
As for potential negative effects, they assumed those could be avoided since the thought behind it is genuinely good.
This presumptuous "doing what’s best for the child" seems altruistic, but in reality? It’s not that simple.
This isn’t the father’s choice but theirs, imposed on him.
It’s like those health supplement marketing conferences where the atmosphere prompts many to spend money on useless products.
While not the same scenario, the logic is similar.
"Teacher Liu, I really want to examine your brain and see what the cortex structure is like since your perspective always differs from ours." Xu Yino said.
"It’s nothing really, just pondering more after experiencing more." Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"Get in touch with Doctor Du. Whether or not he agrees to surgery, we should first examine the child. That’s the first step before moving on."
"Many times, when we consider problems, we should try to step back instead of always thinking about how we should act but view it objectively."
The two girls nodded, as Liu Yiqing ran off to find Du Fancheng.
Stepping out from the treatment room, some patients had gathered in the emergency center waiting area.
After observing the debridement by the interns and trainee doctors for a while, Shanshan returned with his father.
"Doctor, that doctor who just took the X-ray said there’s no need to wait for the images. The repositioning was done well," Shanshan’s father said.
"That’s good. I forgot to tell you earlier about the wound; keep it dry. It’s mostly common sense, really. Use less oil and salt, and avoid spicy food," Liu Banxia said.
"I’ve also made an appointment for you with the ENT doctor. Take Shanshan directly there. Now that we have new considerations, we need to update all the information."
"Then we’ll make a decision based on this updated information, one that we won’t regret later. Making choices can be quite painful."
"Thank you, doctor. I’ll take Shanshan over now," said the child’s father, leading Shanshan towards ENT.
For Liu Banxia, this task was now complete.
If he can make the child’s father reconsider, that is a success.
As for the decision after reconsideration, that’s not something he can intervene in.
As he said, this isn’t a matter of life and death. It’s not like the child would die without a cochlear implant.
"Director Liu, a rescue team will soon be bringing a patient by helicopter. A hiker, rescued after being missing for 58 hours, has hypothermia and is unconscious," Qi Wentai called out.
"Any other injuries?" Liu Banxia asked.
"I expect the injuries are not minor. It’s a fall injury," Qi Wentai said.
Liu Banxia sighed internally. Hypothermia combined with fall injuries makes for severe compound injuries, not easy to rescue.
Why go out to play in such cold weather?
"Li Hao, Huang Bo, come with me to the rooftop to receive the patient. They’ve got hypothermia and fall injuries," Liu Banxia called out.
The two were stunned for a moment, then hurriedly pushed the gurney and ran with Liu Banxia to the elevator.
Memories of past mistakes when receiving hypothermia patients came to mind, almost losing a patient.
This time, they must not make any mistakes.
"Teacher Liu, using a helicopter this time, the rescue must be costing quite a bit?" Li Hao asked.
"Surely, it’s said that he’s a hiker. Usually, if the family is ordinary, they wouldn’t have the time to go out playing," Liu Banxia said.
"Keep your spirits up; they’ve been missing for over fifty hours. Who knows how long they’ve been frozen. With hypothermia and blood loss, this patient’s condition will be very complicated."
Both nodded, realizing the use of a helicopter indicates the seriousness of the patient’s condition.
On reaching the rooftop platform, the wind was quite strong. In the distance, a helicopter was approaching with a faint hum.
"The patient is unconscious, with blood pressure at 80/60, heart rate at 100, multiple lacerations, blunt contusions, a fracture in the right femur, and a body temperature of 30 degrees, currently being warmed up."
Once the helicopter stabilized, the paramedics pulled out the stretcher.
"Not bad, the temperature isn’t too low, but is the blood loss quite severe?" Liu Banxia asked.
"Probably is, given the thick clothing; otherwise, they would have been gone," the paramedic said.
"It’s all yours now. The local hospital couldn’t handle such injuries and had to send them here. The family will arrive shortly, and I’ve given President Qi their contact information."
"OK, leave it to us," Liu Banxia nodded.
Even though the temperature is at thirty degrees, somewhat alleviating the pressure, it’s still tricky. The patient’s blood pressure is very low, and there may be frostbite at the wound sites, which requires removal of necrotic tissue.
"To the emergency room, speed up the transfusion and fluid replenishment, and prepare warm saline, which will help his body temperature rise," Liu Banxia said.
"But you two will lead the rescue. I’ll assist on the side. Don’t panic, although the patient’s condition is complex, you’ve encountered similar situations quite a bit."
Li Hao and Huang Bo nodded solemnly.
The feeling of being entrusted with such responsibility is exhilarating, yet it comes with significant pressure.
They both understood that Liu Banxia’s approach to their training had entered a new phase, raising the stakes.
If they can withstand this phase and gain Liu Banxia’s approval, they’ll earn a treatment contract next year; otherwise, they’ll watch others succeed.
Compared to the hospital’s standards, Liu Banxia’s standards are the gold standard, and are indeed higher.
