Chapter 175: A Chick with an Ancient Bloodline?
"For your own safety, you should probably stay in here for now!"
"Otherwise, I might just end up roasting you one of these days!"
Lin Yi found a cardboard box at home.
He tossed the little chick inside.
Lin Yi knew that a simple cardboard box couldn’t possibly hold it.
It could freeze things; that was its innate skill from the moment it hatched.
How could a mere cardboard box confine it?
So, it would all come down to its self-control.
If it escaped the box again and started causing trouble everywhere...
Lin Yi really might just crush it to death...
"CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP..."
The little chick, now shut in the cardboard box, let out a series of faint chirps.
Its eyes were filled with an utterly pitiful expression.
Lin Yi met its gaze for a few moments, then immediately looked away, unwilling to keep watching.
He was afraid that in the next second, his heart would soften and he’d let it out.
Then, Lin Yi went back to the kitchen and cleaned up the bag of millet.
He didn’t throw away the scattered grains.
Instead, he carefully gathered them up. This would be its next meal.
When Lin Yi returned to the room, the chick was actually lying obediently in the box.
It showed no intention of trying to escape.
Seeing this, Lin Yi smiled in relief.
The next moment, the expression on Lin Yi’s face slowly froze.
Above the little chick’s head, talent entries slowly materialized.
[Heaven-Defying Cultivation: A Demonic Beast of the One-Star Realm]
[Deterrence (Blue): Causes demonic beasts of a lower realm to feel terror and unease]
[Ancient Bloodline (Gold): The blood of an Ancient Divine Bird flows through its veins]
[Ice Seal (Blue): Can freeze any object within a ten-meter radius]
[Pyrokinesis (Blue): Can manipulate flames]
When Lin Yi saw the chick’s talent entries...
His pupils contracted sharply.
Especially that [Ancient Bloodline] entry.
This was the first time Lin Yi had ever seen a talent entry for a bloodline.
’This is no ordinary chick!’
’It actually has the blood of a divine bird?’
Lin Yi looked at the chick lying obediently in the cardboard box, as if it had already been tamed by him.
It was clear that heritage was important, and bloodline was too.
A chick with the bloodline of an Ancient Divine Bird was at the One-Star Realm right out of the shell.
It was just like those Martial Artists from powerful families with strong backgrounds.
From birth, they enjoyed all sorts of cultivation resources.
They never had to worry about such things, and every stage of their growth was a foregone conclusion.
It was the ordinary people like Lin Yi who were different.
If they wanted to make a name for themselves on any path, they had to put in far more effort than others.
This all came down to the luck of the draw at birth.
Being born well could save you at least ten years of struggle.
The alternative was a lifetime of struggle...
Lin Yi decided to raise the chick for now.
It wouldn’t be bad if he could tame it into a pet in the future.
If he couldn’t tame it, then he’d just slaughter it and take its talents for himself.
For now, at least, the chick was relatively well-behaved.
Lin Yi moved the cardboard box into his bedroom.
He placed it under his nightstand, making it convenient to keep an eye on it.
When evening came, Lin Yi fed it some more millet.
He had just put half a saucer of millet in.
A moment later, it was all gone.
Clearly, it wasn’t full yet. It stood in the box, staring pitifully at Lin Yi.
It let out a series of chirps.
"You’re still not full?"
"CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP..."
Lin Yi smiled and nodded. "Wait here, I’ll go get you some more!"
He went to the kitchen and got a bit more millet.
After he put it back in the box, it was gone in the blink of an eye.
This chick wasn’t big, but its appetite certainly was.
Lin Yi sighed and shook his head. "If you keep eating like this, I’ll go broke trying to feed you!"
However, Lin Yi didn’t feed it any more.
He was afraid it didn’t know when it was full and would just keep eating.
It might just eat itself to death.
Lin Yi poured some water for it and placed the saucer in the box.
The little chick walked over to the saucer and tilted its head, looking at it curiously.
The next moment.
With a soft CRACKLE...
The water in the saucer visibly froze solid.
Seeing this, Lin Yi frowned and said, "That’s water. It’s not for playing with, it’s for drinking. Here, let me show you..."
So, Lin Yi picked up his own cup of water and, deliberately slowing his movements, drank it sip by sip.
The little chick was very smart.
After watching intently as Lin Yi finished his water...
It actually tried to imitate him, using its wings to hold the saucer.
Lin Yi: "..."
After several attempts, it ended in failure.
Finally, Lin Yi took out his phone and opened a short-video app.
He typed "chick drinking water," and a bunch of related videos popped up.
Lin Yi placed the phone in the box. "Look, see how others drink water? This should be instinctive, right? How come for you, water is just a toy? Watch and learn!"
The chick watched the video, where a fluffy little chick...
...was standing in front of a puddle, drinking.
In response, the chick let out a "CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP."
Its chirps were sharp and angry.
Apparently, the chick was getting angry.
No matter how it chirped, the chick in the video didn’t react.
The next moment.
Lin Yi watched as his phone was once again frozen solid...
"What the hell, why’d you freeze my phone? It’s fake, it’s just a video..."
Lin Yi quickly snatched his phone out of the cardboard box.
Holding it felt like grabbing a block of ice.
A bone-deep chill seeped into his marrow.
Lin Yi discovered with surprise that things frozen by this chick...
...possessed a chilling cold completely different from that of ordinary ice.
The cold from an ice cube was just... cold.
But the cold from its ice seal could seep into your marrow, drilling right into your bones.
Just from this chilling sensation, if a living creature were to be frozen by it...
...the bone-deep cold drilling into its marrow would cause immense suffering.
If frozen for too long, neither human nor beast would survive.
This just showed how domineering this chick’s ice seal ability was.
Lin Yi ran to the living room and found the hairdryer Tang Qinru had left behind.
It took him ages to thaw out his phone.
He turned it back on to test it. Thankfully, it hadn’t been damaged by the cold.
He anxiously opened a few more apps.
Only after confirming they still worked did he relax a little.
Returning to the bedroom, Lin Yi was just about to scold the chick.
But he saw it standing in the cardboard box...
...with a look of fear and unease in its eyes.
It was conveying its emotions with its gaze.
Like a child who had done something wrong, it was trembling in fear...
The moment he saw it...
...all of Lin Yi’s anger vanished.
He sat on the bed, looked at the chick in the box, and said, "From now on, no more using your ice seal skill recklessly, and don’t break anything else in the house!"
"If you don’t want to drink water, just tell me. Weren’t you able to communicate with me using your divine sense? You could do it in the eggshell, so why not now?"
After he finished speaking, the chick just stood there.
It was hard to tell if it had understood him.
Lin Yi then tried to communicate with it again using his divine sense.
But the result was the same as before.
The moment his divine sense touched it, it was pushed back by some force.
He was completely unable to establish a psychic connection with it.
Lin Yi sighed lightly. "Forget it. I should give you a name."
"’Divine Bird?’"
"’Blood Chicken?’"
"’Little Red? Little Green? Little Blue...’"
"’How about ’Three-Tufts’?’"
Lin Yi shook his head again.
He rejected all the names he had just thought of.
Each name sounded stranger than the last.
They were either names for cats and dogs, which seemed out of place for a chicken (or bird).
Lin Yi sized it up, and it sized him up in return.
From the three tufts of differently colored feathers on its head to its seven-colored tail.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through Lin Yi’s mind.
"I’ve got it! How about I call you Xiaoqi?"
"A seven-colored shell, a seven-colored tail... the name suits you!"
"It’s decided! From now on, your name is Xiaoqi..."
In the cardboard box, Xiaoqi tilted its head, looking at the excited Lin Yi.
A flash of human-like confusion passed through its eyes.
"CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP..."
