Chapter 25: Ch 25. The Queen Gets Slapped?!
"Oh? Really?" Selena replied, blinking slowly. "As far as I recall, you’re just an ordinary cat with no standing whatsoever in Eldoria—how do you know all that?"
Amena smiled, her expression revealing her true nature. However, beneath it all, Selena was well aware that this woman was cunning and envious.
"I’m not as stupid as you, Selena. Do you think they’d be willing to stay with you forever when you’re so useless? That’s ridiculous. Look at how they almost killed you at the Council of Justice yesterday—have you already forgotten?"
Selena nodded, smiling as she looked at her. "You’re right," she replied, leaning back casually, while the fox servant behind her began to look anxious. "Tell me again what you know—it seems you’re very knowledgeable about this; I really don’t know anything."
Amena laughed dismissively, looking at Selena as if she were the queen there, while Selena was just a lowly servant. However, Selena knew cats well enough. She used to have a cat, and those animals really were insolent once they got spoiled.
It was the same now—this woman of cat descent would also become very haughty and arrogant if Selena kept indulging her ego. Let her be; Selena wanted to see just how far she could push her and how recklessly she’d speak.
Who knows, maybe the information will come in handy someday, since Selena really doesn’t know much about the secrets of the wild animal world.
"It’s only natural that you don’t know anything—you’re stupid and weak," Amena said, then stood up and walked like a noblewoman. "It’s a shame, but let me tell you this. None of them love you; each one is thinking in his heart of the woman destined for him. Their kindness is just a ruse—in reality, it’s only to take advantage of you."
Selena calmly watched her stand with her hands on her hips, smiling arrogantly, until Amena finally spoke again.
"Take the Wolf King, for example. He actually has a destined partner chosen for him by the Moon Goddess, the deity they believe in. However, because he’s cursed and belongs to the endangered beastkin, he’s postponed accepting that partner and is trying to heal himself first.
"He signed up to be your husband because of his illness, and he didn’t want to be a burden to the partner destined for him. So once he’s healed, he’ll most likely cast you aside—just like the other Kings would. So why are you bragging? That title of ’Her Majesty the Queen’ is just nonsense," she explained at length, her tone clearly filled with envy and resentment.
Selena smiled slightly, recalling what Stoner had said that morning—that there was no way they would ever divorce. Selena would forever be their wife, because that was how it had been decided by the Eldoria World Council.
Selena didn’t know if that was true or not, but she understood, and she had once read the story of the Wolf King and his Moon when she was still human.
During her breaks at work or at night before bed, Selena liked to read fantasy novels about wolves. And it was true that the Wolf King usually had a predestined mate; he could not marry anyone other than that woman.
So, what Amena said was indeed correct if she was referring to the rules of the wolf world.
It’s just that Selena didn’t know whether the rules in the world of Eldoria—which was inhabited by these wild beasts—were the same or not. She herself was a little surprised at first—why was one of her husbands the Wolf King?
"Why are you so quiet? Is Queen Selena feeling frustrated and sad now after hearing what I said?" Amena laughed maliciously, but Selena simply maintained a calm expression. "Don’t pretend to be so calm—you’re a foolish, weak woman. Those husbands of yours aren’t your real husbands; they’re just using you. When are you going to realize that?"
Selena’s silence made the fox servant swallow hard. She was afraid Selena would get angry; she was afraid this woman might even come to hate the Fox King as well. How could she make the Queen doubt her? Was it okay for her to speak?
"Your Majesty—"
"Your jealousy is so strong, I can even smell it from a kilometer away," Selena replied with unwavering calm.
Selena’s words stopped the fox servant from speaking; instead, she clasped her hands together, preparing to hear what Selena would say next.
"What do you mean, I’m envious?!" Amena snapped, her gaze blazing.
Her displeasure was clearly evident on her face, but Selena merely smiled.
"Having been friends with you for several years now, I know your nature well enough. It’s just that you’re right—all this time I’ve been foolish and didn’t really realize you had this jealous and spiteful side. I thought you’d hold it in for a few more years, but now you’re already losing patience, aren’t you?" Selena said with a calm smile as she picked up her glass.
Amena’s malicious intentions were clear in her gaze—which was fortunate, since Selena hadn’t had a chance to say anything to Prisca. Finding someone so similar to her traitorous best friend made Selena feel relieved, as she now had an outlet for her own resentment.
"What do I have to be jealous of?! Selena Grece, don’t just go around slandering me! I can report you to the Council of Justice for accusing me without evidence!" Amena snapped, her face flushed with anger.
Selena could clearly see that Amena’s emotions were a bit over the top. It seemed like this woman was starting to lose her mind; her frustration had truly reached a boiling point upon seeing Selena living comfortably in the palace after returning from the Judicial Council.
"So then, what exactly do you want? Haven’t you been jealous of me all along because I was chosen as Eldoria’s sole Healer of Extinction? I’m going to be married to kings who are incredibly handsome, dashing, and powerful. That’s the hatred you’ve been harboring in your heart all this time, isn’t it?" Selena retorted softly, gazing at her gracefully.
Amena’s eyes widened, but she tried to keep her expression from giving her away. Damn it, Selena’s pretentiously elegant smile was infuriating! Since when had the Selena she knew—weak and helpless—changed so drastically?!
"Y-you! What do you mean?! I didn’t mean it that way!" she protested nervously, but Selena just chuckled softly.
"Stop holding back—things are different now. You and I don’t owe each other anything; we’re just friends who used to be close. Why don’t you just be honest? Lying or hiding things from me is completely pointless—I can even see what’s on your mind just by looking at your face, Amena," Selena replied, and that left her speechless.
Selena sighed softly, leaning slightly toward Amena, who stood there silent like a foolish girl.
"Just tell me—which of my husbands do you like, Amena? The Dragon King, the Lion King, the Fox King, the Phoenix King, or perhaps the Wolf King?" she asked with a sweet smile.
And that smile felt like a mockery to Amena. She clenched her fists, glaring sharply at Selena’s still-smiling face, waiting for what she would say.
"Are you the one destined to be with one of my husbands, which is why you’re going to all this trouble to tell me all this? If so, which one? So I’ll know and can heal him right away—that way, maybe your claim that he’ll divorce me immediately will come true, and you’ll soon become his wife in my place."
Selena’s eyes widened in shock when she was slapped by Amena.
"Your Majesty, oh my goodness! Guards! Someone just slapped the Queen!" the fox servant who had been standing behind her all along immediately panicked.
"Your Majesty, are you hurt? Good heavens, how dare you slap our Queen!" snapped the fox servant sharply, glaring at Amena’s face, which was beginning to turn pale. "Your Majesty, let me check..."
Selena touched her cheek, which stung only briefly, because her Healing Ability immediately kicked in and healed her. Only the mark of the slap remained, and it was quite clear.
"You filthy cat! How dare you slap the Queen! If the Kings find out, they’ll kill you!" the fox servant raged, then—without Selena’s permission—she slapped Amena’s cheek hard enough to cut her lip. "How insolent! You truly have no manners!"
Amena glared at her. "How dare you hit me! You lowly servant! I’m Queen Selena’s friend—you have no right to hit me!" she shouted, but the fox servant slapped her again.
"You have no right to hit Her Majesty the Queen either! Who do you think you are?! I’m going to report this to the Kings! Just wait and see how they’ll punish you! How dare you—I wonder who gave you the nerve!" the servant retorted sharply.
Selena was shocked by their brutality, but she remembered that the servants in this palace were indeed quite harsh toward people they didn’t like. Selena had also experienced their oppression in the past, so what Amena was going through now was exactly the same as what Selena had gone through before.
"Who are you going to tell? Your king? That Fox King?!" Amena retorted, seemingly without a trace of fear.
"Yes, I’ll tell him! I’ll also report this to the Court Council!"
Amena laughed, while Selena, sitting in her chair, could clearly see the girl’s confidence growing. Even though she had been afraid just a moment ago, now it seemed as if that fear had evaporated.
With her chin held high, Amena looked down on Selena with disdain, then turned her gaze to the furious fox servant.
"It’s no use, you stupid servant! No one can do anything to me, because the Old Fox King once promised me the title of Fox Queen. You’ve been presumptuous—just wait and see how I’ll punish you after this!" she shouted, trying to break free from the guards’ grip.
"Who promised you the status of Fox Queen? The Old Fox King?"
