Chapter 81: Overcoming
The Foundation Hall remained silent.
The silver coin rested upon the ancient Round Table.
No one reached for it.
Headmaster Alaric finally broke the silence.
"...We end today’s discussion here."
Professor Ingrid looked surprised.
"That’s all?"
Alaric nodded.
"For now."
Professor Astrid understood immediately.
"The academy."
Alaric smiled faintly.
"It continues."
He turned toward Noah.
"Whatever lies beneath Valhalla..."
"...will still be there tomorrow."
He looked toward the ceiling, where the distant sounds of students echoed faintly.
"But the students above..."
"...still need to attend class."
Eric would’ve laughed.
Noah simply nodded.
"Understood."
As they climbed the staircase back toward the Headmaster’s Tower...
The atmosphere gradually lightened.
The cold air of the Foundation Hall gave way to warm sunlight.
Birdsong replaced ancient echoes.
Before Noah stepped through the hidden bookshelf...
Alaric stopped him.
"One more thing."
He handed Noah a simple iron ring.
No jewels.
No decoration.
Only the academy crest engraved into its surface.
"What is it?"
Noah asked.
"The Mission Merit Ring."
Professor Astrid answered.
"It isn’t awarded for strength."
Professor Ingrid continued.
"It’s awarded..."
"...for judgment."
Noah accepted it.
"You returned every member of your squad."
Alaric smiled.
"You protected civilians."
"You withheld dangerous information."
"And..."
"...you knew when not to fight."
The Headmaster nodded once.
"You’ve earned it."
Noah slipped the ring onto his right hand.
It fit perfectly.
"Don’t lose it."
Professor Ingrid said.
"There are fewer than thirty students in the academy wearing one."
The hidden passage closed behind them.
The Headmaster’s office looked ordinary once again.
As if nothing extraordinary had happened.
Outside...
The academy courtyard buzzed with life.
Students hurried between classes.
Some sparred.
Others argued over homework.
A few napped beneath the old oak tree.
Noah almost laughed.
Just minutes ago...
He’d stood before mysteries older than kingdoms.
Now...
Two students were loudly debating whose turn it was to clean their dormitory.
Reality had a funny way of balancing itself.
As he crossed the courtyard...
Whispers followed.
"There he is."
"Squad Seven."
"I heard they finished the Eldermere mission."
"Didn’t they disappear for days?"
"No..."
"I heard it was only an hour."
Eric suddenly appeared from behind a pillar.
"There you are!"
He grinned.
"The instructors said you’re finally free."
Luna joined them.
"So."
"Back to ordinary student life."
Damien adjusted the books under his arm.
"We have Professor Ingrid’s combat class in twenty minutes."
Eric’s smile disappeared.
"...I preferred ancient shrines."
Sophia laughed.
"You’ll survive."
As Squad Seven walked toward the training grounds...
Noah noticed someone watching from a second-floor balcony.
Laura Esteria.
She leaned lightly against the stone railing.
The afternoon breeze stirred her long silver-white hair.
Her violet eyes rested on Noah for only a moment.
She gave a small, almost imperceptible nod.
Not admiration.
Not curiosity.
Simply...
Acknowledgment.
Before Noah could respond...
She turned.
Walking back into the academy corridor.
Luna noticed.
"...She was waiting."
Damien looked thoughtful.
"Or confirming something."
Noah said nothing.
He had a feeling...
That meeting wasn’t a coincidence.
The combat arena came into view.
Hundreds of students filled the seats surrounding the massive circular platform.
Professor Ingrid stood at its center.
Wooden practice sword resting on her shoulder.
She looked up as Squad Seven entered.
A rare smile crossed her face.
"It seems..."
"...our travelers remembered they still have classes."
The students laughed.
Professor Ingrid pointed her wooden sword toward the arena.
"Today’s lesson..."
"...is adaptability."
She looked directly at Noah.
"Blackwood."
"Front."
Noah stepped into the center of the arena.
Professor Ingrid smiled.
"Since you’ve returned from a real mission..."
"...let’s see."
"...What did the world teach you?"
High above the arena...
Hidden in the crowd...
A hooded figure quietly watched.
Their face remained concealed.
But beneath the hood...
Silver eyes observed Noah with silent interest.
Then...
Without anyone noticing...
The figure disappeared into the sea of students.
The combat arena buzzed with anticipation.
Hundreds of students filled the stone seats surrounding the circular platform.
Whispers spread like wildfire.
"That’s Noah Blackwood."
"The leader of Squad Seven."
"I heard they completed an A-Class field investigation."
"No way. They’re only first-years."
Professor Ingrid planted her wooden sword into the ground.
The chatter immediately died.
"You’ve all spent the past month learning forms."
She slowly walked across the arena.
"Forms are useful."
"They build discipline."
"They build technique."
She stopped.
"But the battlefield..."
"...doesn’t care about your perfect stance."
Her steel-gray eyes settled on Noah.
"Blackwood."
"You’ve seen that now."
Noah nodded.
"Yes, Professor."
She smiled faintly.
"So."
"Teach them."
The students exchanged confused looks.
One second-year frowned.
"A first-year?"
Another folded his arms.
"Seriously?"
Professor Ingrid heard every word.
Without turning around, she said,
"If anyone believes experience is determined by age..."
"...you’re welcome to prove it."
Silence followed.
She looked toward the crowd.
"I need five volunteers."
Immediately...
Five students stepped into the arena.
Three second-years.
Two first-years.
Each carried a wooden training weapon.
Professor Ingrid pointed toward Noah.
"Your objective is simple."
She looked at the five students.
"Land one clean strike."
Then she looked at Noah.
"You may not attack first."
Eric grinned from the sidelines.
"...She’s making this hard."
Damien shook his head.
"No."
"She’s testing something else."
The five students spread out.
Trying to surround Noah.
Noah didn’t draw his practice sword.
He simply observed.
The distance.
Their breathing.
Their footwork.
The way they glanced at one another before moving.
The student with the spear attacked first.
A straightforward thrust.
Noah sidestepped.
Barely.
The spear continued forward...
And nearly struck another student.
He jumped aside in surprise.
The formation broke.
The second attacker swung from Noah’s blind side.
Noah pivoted.
The strike missed by centimeters.
Instead...
It collided with the spear user’s wooden shaft.
Crack!
Professor Ingrid watched silently.
Noah still hadn’t attacked.
The third student hesitated.
Unsure whether to commit.
That single moment of doubt...
Spread to the others.
Eric laughed.
"They’re fighting each other now."
Professor Ingrid nodded almost imperceptibly.
Finally...
Noah moved.
Not with speed.
With timing.
He stepped between two students.
One light tap with the flat of his wooden sword.
The first was out.
A quick twist.
The second lost balance.
Another tap.
Out.
The remaining three rushed together.
Noah smiled faintly.
"They’ve learned."
Instead of retreating...
He stepped forward.
Straight into the smallest opening.
The attackers collided trying to adjust.
One stumbled.
Another instinctively caught him.
The third lost sight of Noah entirely.
Three precise strikes.
Three clean taps.
Silence.
Less than thirty seconds had passed.
Professor Ingrid looked toward the audience.
"What did he do?"
One student answered,
"He was faster."
"No."
Another spoke.
"He was stronger."
"No."
Damien finally raised his hand.
"He let them defeat their own formation."
Professor Ingrid smiled.
"Correct."
She turned toward Noah.
"What did you learn in Graypine Forest?"
Noah thought of the shrine.
The Keeper.
The river.
The guardian.
Lucien.
Then he answered.
"The world doesn’t always reward the strongest decision."
He looked at the five students, who were already helping one another back to their feet.
"Sometimes..."
"...the safest path isn’t retreat."
"And the fastest path isn’t forward."
He smiled slightly.
"Sometimes..."
"...the correct move..."
"...is simply to wait."
The arena fell silent.
Professor Ingrid nodded once.
"Class dismissed."
Confused murmurs spread immediately.
One student raised his hand.
"But Professor..."
"We only had one demonstration."
Professor Ingrid picked up her wooden sword.
"You just witnessed..."
"...today’s entire lesson."
She walked toward the exit.
"If you understood it..."
"...you learned enough."
As students began leaving...
Laura Esteria stood quietly beneath the academy archway.
She had watched the entire demonstration.
For the first time...
A faint smile reached her violet eyes.
Not because Noah had won.
But because...
He hadn’t been trying to.
From the opposite side of the courtyard...
Cain Draven watched in silence.
He rested one hand on the hilt of his sword.
Then quietly turned away.
"...Interesting."
He disappeared into the academy corridors.
Unnoticed by anyone...
The hooded figure with silver eyes from the upper balcony watched both Laura...
And Cain.
Then softly whispered to themselves,
"The board is filling."
Before fading once more into the sea of students.
