The First Civilization

Chapter 35: The Gathering of Chiefs

Sponsored

Morning arrived over Stone River. The settlement was already awake before sunrise, the sky still holding onto the last traces of night while the village moved with quiet, practiced efficiency. Smoke rose from countless cooking fires, while warriors carrying spears patrolled the wooden walls, their footsteps steady and unhurried along the ramparts.

Unlike the villages Aren had visited before, Stone River moved with purpose. People weren’t rushing in panic. They simply knew what had to be done, each person moving through their morning tasks as though the routine had been carved into the settlement’s bones over generations.

---

The alliance had been given several guest huts near the center of the settlement. After a simple breakfast, a young Stone River warrior approached, his posture formal despite his youth.

"The Council Hall is ready. The chiefs are waiting."

Elder Sen slowly stood. "It is time."

The group followed the warrior through the settlement. As they walked, Aren quietly observed everything around him. The roads were wider than those of Greenleaf, packed earth worn smooth by generations of foot traffic. Small drainage ditches had been dug beside the paths to carry away rainwater, keeping the roads from turning to mud even after a storm. Large storage buildings stood near the river, protected by guards who watched the surrounding streets rather than idling at their posts.

His eyes narrowed slightly. Stone River wasn’t just larger. It was better organized, and that distinction mattered more than size ever could.

---

The Civilization Legacy System quietly appeared.

For a brief moment, Aren saw another vision. A bustling marketplace. Stone roads stretching between towering buildings. Water flowing through carefully built channels, directed with a precision no tribe here could yet manage. The memory vanished as quickly as it had appeared, leaving only its afterimage behind his eyes.

He silently took a deep breath, steadying himself before it could show on his face.

---

Soon, the group arrived before an enormous circular building made from massive wooden pillars, each one thick enough that three men couldn’t have wrapped their arms around it. Several tribal banners hung outside, fabric worn by weather and time. Warriors from different tribes stood nearby, quietly observing one another with the wary curiosity of strangers who weren’t yet sure if they were allies or rivals.

Some wore animal furs, heavy and dark against the morning light. Others carried bone shields or stone axes, weapons shaped by traditions Aren didn’t recognize. He quickly realized not every tribe had developed in the same way — some clearly relied on raw strength and numbers, while others favored careful craftsmanship.

---

As they entered the hall, the room fell silent. More than twenty tribal leaders sat in a wide circle around a large stone table, its surface worn smooth by decades of hands and elbows. Some were old, faces lined and weathered. Some were young, barely older than Aren himself. Some bore scars that covered half their faces, silent testimony to battles fought long before this council was ever called.

Every pair of eyes turned toward the newcomers. One elderly chief spoke first.

"Elder Sen. You’ve arrived."

Sen bowed respectfully. "So have you, Chief Harok."

The greetings continued for several moments, formal and measured. Then Aren noticed something — many of the chiefs looked curiously at him, their gazes lingering a beat too long.

Finally, a broad-shouldered chief broke the silence. "The Greenleaf Tribe brings a child to the Council?"

A few leaders quietly chuckled. Jarek clenched his fists at his side. But Aren remained calm, his expression unreadable.

Before anyone could respond, Elder Sen spoke firmly, his voice carrying clearly across the hall.

"He is not here because of his age. He is here because without him, three tribes would not be sitting in this hall today."

Silence followed. Several chiefs exchanged surprised glances, weighing the weight behind Sen’s words. One of them frowned.

"He’s the one who defeated the Black Fang scouts?"

"No," Captain Reth answered, stepping forward slightly. "He is the one who united us."

The atmosphere inside the hall immediately changed. Curiosity replaced doubt, spreading quietly from one chief to the next.

---

Before another question could be asked, the heavy wooden doors slowly opened once more. Every chief stood at once, the motion rippling through the hall like wind through tall grass.

A tall elderly man entered the hall, supported by an intricately carved wooden staff, its surface etched with symbols Aren didn’t recognize. His hair was completely white, yet his eyes remained sharp, missing nothing as they swept across the gathered leaders.

The entire room lowered their heads. Even Elder Sen showed deep respect, bowing lower than he had for anyone else since their arrival.

The old man walked toward the center of the hall before speaking.

"I welcome you to Stone River. I am Chief Aldren. Guardian of the River Council."

His voice was calm, yet every word carried authority — the kind earned rather than claimed. He slowly looked around the hall.

"For generations, our tribes have fought over land. We have hunted separately. And we have survived separately." He paused, letting the weight of it settle. "But today, a greater danger stands before us. The Black Fang Tribe no longer attacks for food. They attack to conquer."

Murmurs spread throughout the hall. Some chiefs looked uneasy, shifting in their seats. Others remained skeptical, arms crossed, unwilling to accept the claim outright.

Chief Aldren raised one hand.

"The Council begins now."

---

At that exact moment, the Civilization Legacy System appeared.

Aren closed the notification. He could already feel it settling in his chest, heavier than the walk into the hall itself. Winning a battle against the Black Fang had been difficult.

Winning the trust of more than twenty tribal leaders would be even harder.
