Chapter 8: Preparing for Tomorrow

The journey back to the village was quieter than before. Everyone was thinking about the footprints. If another tribe had truly entered the northern forest, then the peace they had known for generations might soon come to an end.

As soon as they returned, Chief Rokan gathered the hunters. "No one leaves the village alone from today onward. Double the guards at night. And repair the eastern wall before sunset."

The hunters nodded and got to work immediately.

Aren looked around the village. Children were carrying small bundles of firewood. Women were cleaning broken tools. The hunters repaired the damaged fence using whatever logs they could find. Everything seemed busy — yet something felt wrong.

He frowned. The logs were scattered across the village. Some were near the huts, others beside the fire, several even left outside the broken wall. No one had gathered them in one place.

"It’ll take forever like this..." The words slipped from his mouth.

"Hm?" Chief Rokan looked at him.

Aren pointed toward the logs. "Everyone is walking back and forth. They spend more time carrying wood than repairing the wall."

The old chief remained silent. Aren picked up a stick and drew a rough square on the ground. "We should pile all the logs here." He marked another spot. "The stone should go here. And the rope should stay beside the workers."

The hunters gathered around him. "If everything is in one place, no one wastes time searching."

One young hunter scratched his head. "...That actually makes sense."

Another nodded. "We’ve never done it that way."

Chief Rokan looked at the simple drawing. After a long silence, he smiled. "Let’s try it."

Within minutes, everyone reorganized the work area — logs, stone, vines, everything sorted into neat piles. The difference became obvious almost immediately. The repairs moved much faster. Even the villagers noticed.

"We’re almost finished already."

"I didn’t have to walk across the village even once."

Aren quietly watched them. He hadn’t taught them anything difficult. Only a better way to work together.

Just then, the familiar blue screen appeared.

Aren smiled faintly. "So... even something this simple matters."

As the sun slowly disappeared behind the mountains, the eastern wall finally stood complete once again. The villagers cheered. For the first time in many days, they felt safe.

But high above the village, on the rocky cliffs overlooking the valley, the mysterious figure from the forest silently observed everything.

"...Interesting."

It was a human voice Aren had never heard before.

The figure turned and disappeared into the fading light. Unaware of the eyes watching from afar, the people of the village celebrated another day of survival.
