Chapter 111: Crown Scar
The broken crown lay in three pieces where Kael had torn it apart. Each piece curved like part of a dark halo, and his blood still shone along the edges.
The two surviving Excisors were gone. Their retreat had left the passage quiet enough for everyone to hear the largest fragment move.
CLINK!
It turned against the floor and stopped with its wet edge facing Kael.
Renn pulled the count cloth tighter between the survivors. His voice had not recovered from the glass ring, so he spoke softly. "Keep hold of the cloth while Vaela looks, and leave enough room between Kael and those pieces for him to move."
Jaro crouched behind Orrek and peered around his arm. "I have seen broken route glass before. It usually lies still and waits for somebody foolish enough to collect it."
"You may continue waiting behind me," Orrek said. His damaged shoulder hung low, and Vaela’s wrapping around his palm had already turned red. "I am wounded enough to make you feel brave from there."
Vaela ignored both men. She knelt beyond the fragment’s reach and held the wrapped white edge close to the floor without letting the two materials touch.
A low vibration passed through the black glass.
HUM!
Pale light gathered inside the largest piece. A small image appeared over it: Kael gripping the lower ring, driving his elbow into the crown, and breaking the center. The image stopped, returned to the beginning, and played again more slowly.
Vaela’s eyes narrowed. "It remembers the last strike. Every time it repeats the movement, the light reaches farther into the floor."
Jaro shifted away from the spreading glow. "A live crown carries what it sees to the rooms above. A broken one should not be able to finish the message, unless part of its path is still connected."
Kael looked beneath the image instead of watching himself break the crown again. A thread as thin as hair ran from the middle fragment into a seam under the floor.
The survivors were tired enough to miss it. Sella held her daughter against one shoulder. Tavin supported Dorran while the injured man’s useless ankle dragged behind him. The burned worker kept both hands over his ribs and breathed through his teeth. Every one of them needed the passage to remain open longer than their bodies could manage.
Orrek lifted his chain. "I can crush the pieces before they call anything else. My useful hand still closes, and the chain does not need to be clever."
Vaela rose and placed herself between his boots and the nearest shard. "A blow would give it another movement to study. Keep the chain ready for something with a body while I find where the light is going."
Orrek lowered the links without hiding his irritation. "I am beginning to miss enemies that bleed when struck."
Vaela pointed at his wrapped palm. "Your hand is still bleeding, so hold the rear and keep it above your heart."
Orrek obeyed, although his expression promised complaints later.
Vaela used the pause to inspect the rest of the line. She tightened the cloth around Tavin’s shoulder, checked Dorran’s swollen ankle without asking him to stand on it, and gave Sella a clean strip for the scrape along her daughter’s cheek. The burned worker tried to wave her away until she found blood spreading beneath his coat.
"You may be quiet while I work, but you may not hide a wound from me," she told him. "Pressure under the ribs can stop a man before the bleeding reaches his clothes."
The worker lifted his arms. Sella held the coat aside while Vaela pressed folded cloth against the torn skin.
Renn gave each person a place by touch. Tavin and Dorran stayed near the middle, Sella kept her daughter ahead of the burned worker, and Orrek guarded the rear where his chain could move without crossing another survivor.
A drop escaped the bandage around his forearm.
DRIP!
The blood struck the floor beside him. A pale circle began drawing itself around his boot.
Renn saw it first. He pulled Orrek toward the count line and pressed the stained cloth against the bleeding sleeve. "Use this until Vaela can close the wound. The floor is drawing around anyone who leaves blood behind."
Orrek looked at the circle tightening where he had stood. "I am running out of places where bleeding is considered polite."
Two survivors laughed nervously, but neither released the cloth.
The largest fragment brightened again. A narrow line slid across the floor toward the burned worker at the rear.
RUSTLE!
The sound resembled paper moving beneath a hand, although no paper existed in the passage. The worker froze as the line reached for his shadow.
Kael stepped on it.
The floor bowed beneath the hidden weight of his body. A shallow print formed around his boot, deeper than the fragment expected from his size, and the pale line trapped itself inside the dent before it could reach the worker.
HISS!
The pale line vanished under his boot. Cold pressure climbed through the cut in his left forearm and traced the path the Excisor’s blade had opened.
The fragment was no longer watching an old image because it had begun testing the same wound again.
The Sovereign Root answered.

One shard burned inside Kael. The fragment’s light grew stronger, ready to follow whatever changed next.
He spent the shard before it could finish tracing him.

The passage did not become simpler, but Kael noticed which movements did not belong.
The largest fragment held the image. The middle piece sent each repetition into the floor. The smallest piece remained dark, yet a faint pressure gathered along the edge nearest Vaela’s ankle.
"Three active pieces," Kael said. "The middle one is connected below us, and the smallest is waiting for somebody to come close."
Vaela moved her boot away. Jaro lowered himself until his cheek almost touched the floor, keeping his wounded hands behind his back.
"There is a side channel under the seam," Jaro said. "The old crews called it a crown scar because broken crown memories moved through it. I never saw one open, since people who did were taken upstairs before they could describe much."
"An older pipe boy once returned after finding a sealed scar near the market drains. He could remember the floor opening and a white attendant washing his hands, but he could not remember his own brother’s face. The crews stopped digging near pale seams after that."
Renn looked at Jaro rather than the floor. "Did the boy remember where the channel led?"
"Only that the sound moved sideways before somebody came for him. I believed he was feverish until the attendants took him away the following night."
A red-black slit appeared beneath the middle fragment.
SCRAPE!
Warm light moved through the slit and travelled away from the main passage. The channel was far too narrow for a person. It had been built to carry pressure and memory, not flesh.
Renn kept his eyes on Jaro while his fingers counted the cloth. "Where does it go? I need an answer that helps us choose a direction, even if the answer frightens you."
Jaro swallowed and looked down the narrow line. "Somewhere that decides what comes after a crown fails. I only know the channel runs sideways before it climbs."
Kael bent and picked up the smallest fragment with two fingers.
Its dark edge snapped shut against his skin.
CRACK!
A tooth-shaped piece broke from the fragment instead of entering his hand. Kael held it until the light inside it faded.
Orrek stared at the broken edge. "It tried to bite you after watching what happened to the crown. I almost respect the stupidity."
"It learned after I had already broken the part that mattered," Kael said.
Vaela unfolded a second strip of cloth. Smoke rose when she wrapped the largest fragment, but she kept her injured wrist straight and wound the material around it twice.
The smoke carried no smell of blood or hot metal. It smelled like a chamber scrubbed after violence, clean enough to make the survivors remember rooms where workers vanished before morning.
Sella’s daughter reached toward the pale glow beneath the cloth.
Renn caught the child’s wrist and crouched so she could see his face. "I know it looks beautiful, but it just tried to bite Kael and draw a circle around Orrek. Keep both hands on your mother until we leave this passage."
The child nodded and hid her fingers in Sella’s coat.
Jaro watched Vaela secure the bundle against her forearm. "If we carry it, the channel can follow us, but leaving it here lets the message continue without us."
Vaela checked the knot and stood. "I can keep it away from the floor for a while, so we carry it until we find where the channel opens. Everyone else keeps away from the cloth."
Orrek moved to the rear while Renn guided the injured into line, and everyone followed because the walls had begun closing behind them by the width of a finger.
A deeper vibration travelled through the side channel.
RUMBLE!
Something far ahead answered with three slow pulses.
Kael stepped into the narrow artery first. He kept his wounded side toward the wall and his body between the pale floor seam and the survivors.
The left wall opened by the width of a nail. A bead of pale oil slid out and touched the path before his next step.
Vaela raised the smoking bundle. "The channel knows we moved the fragment. Watch the floor and keep every wound covered."
Renn passed the warning down the line. "Watch for pale oil, cover every wound, and keep the cloth moving between your hands." Fourteen people followed Kael into the side passage while the broken crown trembled inside Vaela’s cloth.
