The First Outlier: Primordial Fracture

Chapter 120: Crown Judgement

The false face split apart and revealed the machine beneath it.

Five curved plates surrounded a black glass core inside the platform. They opened and closed like the broken points of a crown. White cords ran from the core into the floor, mirrors, and pale rings circling the survivors’ feet.

CLINK!

The plates shifted around the core, and the nearest mirrors turned toward Kael.

Vaela backed away with the wrapped crown fragment under one arm and the damaged white edge in her bleeding hand. Orrek kept his smoking chain around the platform as his injured shoulder shook. Jaro crouched beside him with both torn palms against his chest.

"I can see what holds it now," Vaela said. "The thick cord on the left turns the plates, and the smaller ones carry whatever the mirrors learn. Keep the platform from moving while I reach the thick one."

Orrek tightened his chain. "My shoulder may leave before the rest of me, but the platform will stay."

The black core struck the stone beneath them.

HUM!

Fourteen pale rings tightened around fourteen pairs of ankles. Renn moved among the survivors with his burned hands out, joining wrist to wrist before anyone could be pulled away.

"Keep touching someone, and change your footing whenever the rings tighten," he said. "It has watched us stand still long enough."

The floor lurched. Kael’s left calf clenched around the broken hook still bound inside it, and fresh blood warmed the cloth. He lowered his weight before the old injury could fold his leg.

RUMBLE!

The platform sank beneath him. Orrek’s chain snapped taut, stopping it from turning toward Vaela.

The mirrors flashed Kael’s earlier victories across their dark surfaces. One showed his fist breaking the Quarantine Crown. Another showed his knee striking the old mouth. A third held the angle of his shoulder when he had driven through the gravity press. With each image, one of the crown plates moved into position to meet the same attack.

Jaro stared at the moving plates. "It is not guessing anymore. Every mirror gives the core an angle, and the core prepares a harder surface before he reaches it."

"Can you tell which mirror moves which plate?" Renn asked.

"Give me a moment. I would prefer not to be wrong during this part."

Kael stepped forward before the core finished preparing.

The pale rings rushed after him.

CLANG!

Orrek swept his chain across the floor. Three rings broke against the links, while the others sprang over them and closed again around the survivors.

"I cannot keep doing this," Orrek said through his teeth. "Someone should remember how impressive the first attempt looked."

Vaela moved closer to Sella while watching the tremor in Orrek’s shoulder. "Keep the next sweep low enough to catch the ring beside her, and save what strength you have left."

Sella pulled her daughter close. Dorran braced on Tavin, while the bowl boy held the furnace-scar woman’s wrist. None of them had room to run.

The core fired a white cord into Kael’s chest.

SPLIT!

His ribs locked. The pull dragged his wounded shoulder backward and forced his left leg toward the copied limp. It placed each injury where the anchor had already seen it fail.

The Sovereign Root answered inside Kael alone.

Seven shards burned through him while the cord tightened. The crown plates began turning, ready to use the position it had forced upon his body.

Kael chose where the strength would go.

Core Mass Density. Gravity Vector Impact. Primordial Marrow Layer. Metaphysical Resistance. Regenerative Dominion.

His boots crushed hollows into the floor. The white cord pulled again, but his heavier bones refused the prepared stance. Heat moved through his marrow, holding the damaged leg and shoulder together, while his thoughts cleared.

Blood still ran. The hook still tore his calf. The new strength did not remove either wound.

It gave him control of the wounded body.

Kael drove his heel down.

THUD!

Two rings cracked beneath the impact. He crossed the short distance before the mirrors could settle on another picture.

THUD!

The second step forced the platform lower. Its right side tried to rotate, but Orrek leaned back with the chain across his hip and stopped it.

"The top plate belongs to the fist mirror," Jaro called. "The lower one follows his knee, and the narrow plate is waiting for his shoulder."

Kael saw the prepared surfaces. Black teeth rose along each one, aimed at the joints they expected him to use.

He did not give them the same fight.

His shoulder struck the low plate meant for his knee.

CRACK!

Glass teeth snapped against the denser bone. Kael turned through the collision and drove his elbow into the narrow plate before it could meet his shoulder.

CRUNCH!

The top plate swung toward his right fist. He stepped inside its reach, caught its edge with both hands, and pulled it across the path of the rising knee plate.

CLANG!

Both plates smashed together. Glass cut his cheek and reopened the groove along his forearm, but the core lost two sides of its guard.

Vaela ran for the exposed left cord. Her damaged edge touched it and skidded away, throwing white sparks across her wrist.

HISS!

She wrapped the cloth around her palm, gripped the blade with both hands, and tried again. "The cord is carrying the turn before the plates move. I can slow it, but I cannot cut it while the core keeps pulling."

Renn looked from her blade to the rings around the survivors. "We can make it pull in too many directions. Everyone move when I touch your wrist, and stop when I let go. Do not follow the person beside you."

His hands passed through the line in an uneven rhythm. Sella stepped left while Tavin leaned right. The furnace-scar woman crouched as the bowl boy rose. Dorran stamped his uninjured foot, and the burned worker twisted without exposing his ribs.

The rings jerked after fourteen different movements. White cords crossed beneath the platform and dragged against one another.

Vaela’s edge sank deeper.

Orrek gave the chain one brutal pull. His shoulder buckled, yet the platform shifted away from the cord instead of toward it.

SCRAPE!

The thick white cord peeled halfway out of its groove.

The anchor opened every remaining plate around Kael. Teeth came from his left, right, and above, leaving no clean direction for a fist or kick.

Kael lowered his head and charged through the smallest gap.

CRASH!

His forehead shattered the cracked remnant of the Judge’s face. He planted his right foot inside the platform, drove his knee into the underside of the black core, and locked both hands around the thick cord Vaela had loosened.

The core tried to close around his arms.

Kael pulled down while his knee drove up.

SHATTER!

The black glass split through the middle. Thick white fluid sprayed across his chest, and the remaining plates closed on one another instead of his body.

White cords snapped across the chamber.

SNAP! SNAP! SNAP!

The mirrors screamed as their copied images broke apart.

SCREECH!

Kael tore the left half of the core free and slammed it into the half still beating beneath his knee.

BOOOOM!

The platform collapsed. A heavy wave flattened the rings and drove everyone behind Kael to one knee. Orrek released his chain before the stone took his arm. Vaela covered the crown fragment and damaged edge beneath her body.

Darkness held for three heartbeats.

Renn found the furnace-scar woman’s wrist. She reached for the bowl boy, and his hand found Tavin. Contact passed through the line until Renn counted all fourteen.

His laugh came out thin and painful. "Everyone is here. I counted twice because I did not trust the first one."

The mirrors remained dark. No ring returned to correct him.

Kael climbed out of the broken platform with the dead left cord wrapped around his wrist. Both arms bled, the binding around his calf had turned red, and fragments of black glass covered his hair and shoulders. He had won by using his whole body, but the machine had made him pay for every part of it.

Far away, Ivara Thane opened her eyes inside a cold cell before the fourth restraint bell.

The third link crossing her ribs trembled hard enough to bruise her skin. The fourth link remained whole. Her promised moment had not arrived, but the chain beside the third link cracked and made the examiner outside her door step back.

CRACK!

Ivara felt the new weakness through the metal and smiled without warmth. "Strike it again. I want to know whether fear makes your hand steadier."

Back in the ruined chamber, Vaela wrapped the dead cord in cloth instead of leaving it against Kael’s skin. Jaro watched the opening beyond the platform widen into a rough passage.

"The core used every answer it had," he said. "Something deeper will know those answers failed."

Vaela bound the cut on Kael’s forearm without looking up. "The next thing will need time to prepare, and we should not give it much."

Orrek gathered his chain with one working hand. "Please tell the next thing to prepare a chair. My shoulder and I have reached the end of our friendship."

The survivors moved toward the passage while Renn kept the count alive through touch. Somewhere below them, small gears stopped ticking. Heavier machinery began to turn.

Kael noticed a metal bracket hidden beneath the broken platform, still warm and standing a finger-width above the stone. He fixed its shape in his memory before following the fourteen into the path the anchor had failed to close.
