The First Outlier: Primordial Fracture

Chapter 114: Crown Path

The pulse beneath the chamber returned after the survivors reached the forward opening.

THUD!

Kael felt it through both feet. The vibration started far below the carved water channels, crossed beneath the pale scars, and vanished under Vaela’s position.

Vaela stopped the line with one raised hand. "The hidden path passes here, so give me enough room to test the floor without putting anyone above it."

Renn moved the survivors toward the older stone wall, where faded carvings remained visible between the white repairs. Orrek guided Dorran by the belt while Tavin supported the injured side. Jaro stayed inside the count line with both palms wrapped.

Vaela unfastened the damaged white edge from her belt. A strip of ration cloth covered its cutting side, but heat had burned brown marks through the wrapping.

Vaela opened a shallow cut along her thumb.

Jaro stared. "Please tell me the blade slipped, because I would prefer incompetence to whatever plan requires more blood."

"The crown fragment answered every fresh wound in the last chamber," Vaela said. She held her bleeding thumb near the wrapped piece on her forearm. "A small amount lets me see where the floor tries to carry it."

The fragment pulsed. A pale thread rose from the smoking cloth and leaned toward the stone beneath her knees.

HISS!

Vaela followed the thread with the white edge. She kept the blade flat and moved it slowly enough for everyone to watch the floor react.

The edge scraped across black glass.

SCRAPE!

A curve appeared below the surface. It ran forward for three steps, dipped beneath the chamber, and turned toward the right-hand wall.

Older channels surrounded it, stained blue and green by water that had once heated bathing rooms, kitchens, and winter shelters higher on the mountain. White glass covered them thinly because the old structure still moved heat efficiently.

Jaro recognized the branching pattern from market cistern repairs and traced it from a distance with one wrapped finger. "The old water layer has worker crossways, and although most collapsed when the white rooms sealed the lower route, a few may still hold enough space for crawling."

Jaro lowered himself beside the curve without touching it. "The line carries broken crown memories, so crews called it a crown artery because nothing with flesh was supposed to enter."

Orrek looked at the narrow shape. "My chain will fit, although my shoulders will not."

"The links would be stripped and carried away before you pulled them back," Jaro said. "We need the chain attached to you more than the hidden path needs another piece of metal."

Orrek accepted the warning and wound the loose links around his forearm.

Vaela adjusted the white edge by the width of a finger. Fresh blood touched the cloth and sank through. The hidden curve brightened, revealing rows of small black teeth along both sides. Red-black light moved between them like heated water under glass.

The floor shook again.

THUD!

A group of teeth travelled through the artery, each carrying a pale image from the crown Kael had broken. One held the angle of his shoulder. Another carried the position of his feet. A third showed the moment his hand closed around the lower ring.

Renn leaned over the reflected line. "Where are they taking the pieces?"

Jaro watched the light. "They are moving away from the chamber and under the normal passage, where something deeper is collecting them before the next response reaches us."

Vaela continued tracing until the floor showed both routes at once. The ordinary passage widened ahead, with plates waiting at several heights. The crown artery curved beneath it toward a dark pulse that remained out of sight.

"The upper path will test the injured again, while the lower path carries what the crown learned about Kael, so we cannot ignore either one," Vaela said.

The people nearest Dorran looked toward the waiting plates. Tavin pulled the injured man’s arm more securely across his shoulders, while Sella moved her daughter ahead and checked the cloth over the child’s mouth. Neither of them stepped away.

Vaela glanced from Dorran’s swollen ankle to the lights moving beneath the floor. "We can cross another row of plates if we keep our breathing uneven, but the teeth will reach the lower chamber first. Kael needs another way to stop them without leaving us here."

Kael studied the old water channels around the artery. Their curves crossed beneath both routes, joining the buried structure without belonging to the newer glass.

Sella pulled her daughter closer while Dorran studied his swollen ankle and understood which path would catch him first. Tavin kept an arm around him, and Renn waited beside Kael instead of urging him after the moving teeth.

A white cut opened beneath Vaela’s edge.

SPLIT!

The line turned away from her and raced toward Kael’s boot.

He stepped onto it before it reached Renn.

Cold pressure climbed his leg. The floor tried to drag his next step toward the crown artery, using the image of his earlier movement to decide where his foot should land.

The Sovereign Root answered.

One shard ignited inside Kael. The hidden teeth turned toward him as the floor increased its pull.

He sent the shard into Velocity Movement Authority.

Kael’s boot stopped sliding.

The floor kept pulling, but his next movement belonged to him again. He shifted his heel away from the route’s chosen angle and planted it beside the white line.

CRACK!

Black glass broke outward around his sole. The hidden artery flickered fully into view, and every moving tooth paused.

Kael tested the change before trusting it with fourteen lives. He lifted his foot while the white line pulled left, placed it to the right, and shifted his weight only after the heel touched solid stone. The floor tried to correct him twice. Both attempts ended in small cracks around the chosen print.

Orrek laid one chain link near the edge of the pull. It slid toward the artery at once. Kael caught it under his boot before the rest of the chain followed, proving the route still controlled loose objects even when it could no longer finish his movement.

"Your feet can refuse it," Orrek said. "The chain cannot, so I will keep every link wrapped until we reach the other side."

Kael nodded. The upgrade gave him a reliable anchor, not protection for anyone standing away from his body.

Renn watched the footprint remain where Kael chose to place it. "The passage can pull at him, but it cannot finish the step for him anymore."

Vaela lifted the white edge from the floor. "Keep everyone out of the broken print because the route will try the same pull on a lighter body if it gets the chance."

Vaela wrapped her thumb while Renn passed the warning down the line. Orrek marked the dangerous spot with a loose chain piece, placing it beyond reach without touching the white cut.

A nervous wheeze escaped from one of the workers.

WHEEZE!

The crown teeth began moving again. Their pace had doubled.

Jaro followed them on his knees. "The break memory will reach the deeper pulse before the injured clear the upper plates, and once it arrives, whatever waits there will know how Kael stood, where he struck, and which wounds slowed him."

Kael looked at the ordinary path. Breath plates hung above its clean floor, ready for Tavin, Dorran, and anyone forced to crawl. The hidden artery offered no space for a human body, only enough room for the moving teeth and their stolen images.

Renn pressed the count cloth once through fourteen hands. The signal carried the same answer without risking a spoken number near the listening walls: nobody would be left for the upper route to sort.

Kael crouched beside the white fracture. "We stay out of the passage built to strip flesh, and we stop the teeth before they reach the deeper pulse."

Vaela studied the space between the upper path and the artery. Old stone separated them, crossed by the water channels that belonged to the original chamber.

"The builders left a maintenance layer between both routes, and the white glass covered it instead of removing it," Vaela said. "A strong enough break could reach the layer without entering either passage."

Jaro rubbed his bandaged palms together. "A maintenance layer is not wide enough for fourteen people, and the water channels may collapse if Kael opens it carelessly."

"Show me where the channels join, and Vaela will mark the safe edge before I break the glass between them," Kael said.

Jaro studied Kael’s cracked footprint and exhaled. Fear remained plain on his face, but he moved to Vaela’s side and began pointing out the older curves beneath the white surface.

The crown teeth below noticed their attention.

CLICK!

One turned toward them.

CLICK!

The others followed until every pale image faced the chamber above.

The floor opened a thin fracture between the upper passage and the artery where no route had existed moments earlier. The gap was too narrow for a survivor, but old warm air rose through it.

Kael placed one foot at the mouth of the fracture. "Move the injured behind me and prepare to cross when the wall gives way."

Vaela raised the white edge and marked the first safe point. Renn rebuilt the line around Dorran and Tavin. Orrek took the rear while Jaro traced the final water channel.

Sella and the burned worker would take the first child through once the gap widened. Two survivors supported Dorran between them, leaving Tavin free to protect the injured shoulder from the glass. Vaela kept the crown bundle high and placed herself where she could see both Kael’s legs and Jaro’s markings.

The chamber scars began pulsing faster.

HUM! HUM! HUM!

They had understood the new route before Kael finished making it.
