Chapter 115: Sweet Things.
『"Life is like a layered cake. You never know what you’re going to get."』
Sophia’s eyes fluttered open to the sterile glow of the Institute’s medical wing. The familiar beep of monitors greeted her as she stared at the ceiling.
Sitting in the chair beside her bed was Maya, legs crossed, a warm smile on her face. "I hear you’re starting to become a regular here," Maya teased lightly.
Sophia let out a weak chuckle, surprised and glad to see her. "Yeah... guess I’m collecting frequent patient points."
They looked at each other for a moment. "It’s really good to see you," Sophia said. Then her gaze fell to the prosthetic.
The mechanical arm resting across Maya’s lap looked almost natural at first glance. The metallic fingers flexed with surprising smoothness.
Maya followed her gaze. "This?" She raised the arm slightly. "It’s amazing what modern medical technology can do."
The fingers opened, closed, and rotated. It moved with a precision that honestly couldn’t be replicated with natural fingers.
Sophia’s smile faded, and a familiar knot settled in her chest. "...I’m sorry."
Maya raised an eyebrow. "What for?"
Sophia gestured toward the prosthetic with her head.
Maya stared at it for a second before understanding. Then she snorted. "Love, on the contrary." She leaned back in her chair. "I should be thanking you."
Sophia frowned. "If it wasn’t for me, you’d still have your hand."
"And if it wasn’t for you and Amara, we’d all be dead in a cave somewhere."
Sophia opened her mouth to speak, but no words came.
Maya noticed and smiled softly. "And with the Discord King, cool name by the way. You saved people."
"But—"
"No buts," Maya interrupted gently and Sophia fell silent.
Maya raised the prosthetic arm again and lowered her voice. "Besides..." She leaned closer. "It’s got some wicked features."
Sophia blinked. "What?"
Maya’s grin widened. "I can’t tell you. Classified."
Sophia raised an eyebrow with a smile on her face, then laughed. "Hiro should never find out you said Discord King was a cool name. He already has a big enough head."
Maya joined her laughing. Then she rose to her feet. "Oh, before I forget."
Sophia looked up.
"Congratulations," Maya said.
"Huh?"
"On becoming a Shaper."
Sophia instinctively touched the side of her temple and a small smile appeared on her face. "Thanks."
Maya moved toward the door. "One more thing." She stopped with her hand on the edge of the threshold. "Your friends have a surprise for you."
Sophia immediately narrowed her eyes. "What kind of surprise?"
Maya simply smiled, then opened the door.
The moment she stepped out, the entire gang burst into the room, carrying a large cake with slightly lopsided frosting that read: Congrats on Becoming a Shaper!
"Congratulations!" they shouted in messy unison and dropped the cake on a small desk next to one of the monitors that beeped.
"Really?" Sophia stared at them, then at the cake. "A cake? It’s not even my birthday."
Hiro folded his arms and huffed. "Pfft. It was all Amara’s idea. I told her it was a bad one."
"Hey!" Amara shot him a look.
"I told her it was a terrible idea," Hiro added.
Meanwhile, Ethan calmly wrapped an arm around Amara’s waist and pressed a kiss against her forehead while she tried to look annoyed at Hiro. The gesture immediately distracted her.
"Hey," Ethan called. "You did good."
Amara visibly deflated. "...thank you."
Across the room, Raj continued staring at the cake. "I mean..."
Everyone looked at him.
"If nobody wants it..." He shrugged. "...I can help."
Sophia laughed, and Raj pouted, mumbling, "I didn’t get a cake when I reached Shaper."
Amara gave him a graceful smile. "I’ll bake you one later, Raj."
Raj immediately perked up. "For real?"
"Really," Amara assured him.
"In that case," Hiro cut in, "I would also like a cake."
"No." Amara didn’t even look at him.
Hiro’s shoulders sagged. "Worth a shot."
Sophia watched the entire exchange with growing amusement. Then she looked toward the cake. "...what kind of cake is it?"
Amara’s expression instantly transformed as her eyes lit up.
Everyone recognized that look.
"Oh." She carefully lifted the cake. "I’m glad you asked."
Hiro groaned. "Here we go."
Amara ignored him. "The base layer is chocolate sponge infused with espresso."
Sophia lifted an eyebrow. "Oh?"
"The middle layer is dark chocolate mousse balanced with sea salt to keep it from becoming too sweet," Amara continued.
Raj looked emotional already.
"And the top layer is vanilla cream with caramelized hazelnuts." She pointed proudly. "The texture changes with every bite. Soft sponge, smooth mousse, then crunch."
Hiro slowly turned toward Ethan. "She’s doing the thing again."
Ethan nodded. "She is."
Amara ignored them both. "Every layer is different. You never quite know what you’re getting next."
Sophia found herself smiling. "Okay."
Amara grinned. "Right?" Then she carried the cake to a nearby table and began cutting slices. A few minutes later, everyone was armed with plastic plates and spoons.
Sophia took the first bite and her eyes widened. Then widened further. "...fuck me."
Everyone looked at her as Sophia pointed at the cake. "This is fucking amazing."
Amara looked pleased.
Raj immediately shoved a spoonful into his mouth. His eyes rolled back. "Oh my God."
Hiro pointed his spoon at Amara. "Okay, I take back everything I said about the cake."
"You said it was a bad idea," Amara reminded him.
"I know what I said," Hiro replied.
Ethan quietly sampled his piece. Then nodded once with his fingers over his lips. Amara recognized that expression immediately. For Ethan, that was practically a standing ovation.
The room filled with conversation and laughter.
Raj took another bite and groaned. "It’s like Megan Fox, Ana de Armas, and Kerry Washington having a threesome in my mouth."
Sophia nearly spat out her cake. "Wow..." she stared at him.
"What is wrong with you?" Amara added at the exact same time.
Raj blinked. "What?"
"Really, Raj?" Sophia shook her head. "Really?"
"You can’t just say things like that," Amara said.
"It was a compliment!" Raj yelled in confusion.
Hiro rolled his eyes. "Oh, please. So it’s okay when chicks say stuff like that?"
Sophia scoffed. "We do not!"
"You absolutely do," Hiro shot back. "Ethan back me up here."
Ethan remained quiet.
"That’s different," Sophia countered.
"How?"
She pointed her spoon at him. "Because it just is."
Hiro raised a hand. "That sounds like some double standard bullshit to me."
"No." Amara said defensively. "I’m the one who gets to call bullshit."
Then she glanced toward Ethan, who had remained suspiciously quiet throughout the entire exchange and was calmly eating his cake.
"And what do you think?" she asked him.
Ethan didn’t even look up from his plate. "I think this is an excellent cake." Amara stared at him as he took another bite and continued, "and I think the baker is exceptionally talented."
A smile spread across Amara’s face. "Good answer."
Before anyone could continue, every device in the room buzzed simultaneously, and the room immediately went quiet.
"Well." Hiro looked at his device. "There goes peace."
Sophia checked hers. It was a priority summons from Director Hale.
"Meeting in ten minutes," Ethan said after reading the notification.
Hiro checked the date on his phone, then licked the frosting off his spoon. "Remind me again—when’s that convergence thing?"
"In five days," Ethan replied.
Hiro nodded. "Cool. Just checking. Let’s go then."
Raj lifted both arms and stretched. "Yeah..."
Amara glanced at Sophia. "You good to move?"
"Yeah," Sophia said, swinging her legs off the bed and standing. This time without wobbling or needing help. She smiled. "I’m good."
Amara nodded to the guys. "You guys head out. We’ll catch up."
The guys exchanged knowing looks. Then one by one, they began heading for the door. The door closed behind them. And it was just Sophia and Amara.
