『"It’s now or it’s never, no playing with erasure..."』

"It will be so much more satisfying to kill you with my bare hands. To feel your bones break. To watch your flesh rot beneath my touch," Corruption said as it shot forward towards Amara.

She cut itd first appendage, severing it cleanly at the elbow. Quickly, the limb was already regenerating, flesh sprouting from the stump, while the other four arms delivered coordinated strikes from different angles.

Amara parried and blocked with an obsessive precision, controlling her footwork desperately. One wrong step meant death. One miscalculation meant her teammates died. The margin for error had shrunk to nothing.

Corruption’s six arms moved like a storm of blades around her, each strike carrying enough concentrated toxin to kill a hundred humans instantly.

Claws flashed from unpredictable angles, forcing Angel’s Bane into a constant blur of black steel and defensive blue light.

CLANG!

She pivoted on her back foot, redirecting another slash past her shoulder by a hair’s breadth. Then the second arm came immediately after, faster than before, learning from the failed strike.

Amara twisted sideways as the claw missed her ribs by inches before carving through a stone pillar behind her instead.

But Corruption was learning. Its six eyes tracked every adjustment she made. Every dodge. Every pivot. Every preferred angle. It was mapping her.

The third arm swept high and wide, forcing Amara to duck beneath it instinctively by lowering her head.

Exactly what Corruption wanted.

The fourth and fifth arms shot upward from below like spears aimed directly at her exposed abdomen. She saw them, but they were too close, moving too fast to evade normally.

She slammed Angel’s Bane downward with its tip at the last second, striking the ground hard enough to launch herself upward with the recoil.

The claws tore through empty air beneath her. And in that suspended instant, Corruption opened its grotesque mouth, letting out a spray of glowing green venom, spat toward her face.

"Watch out!" Sophia’s scream echoed behind her.

She was mid-air with no footing, leverage, or room to dodge. So Amara did the only thing she could think of. She pushed down against the air like it was solid, her boots finding resistance.

Then she cut the air itself as Angel’s Bane carved horizontally in front of her and the pressure from the slash detonated outward like a compressed shockwave.

The venom cloud split apart, most of it blasting harmlessly around her. But a few burning droplets slipped through the gap and struck her shoulder and her side.

Instantly, the flesh sizzled, smoke rose from her body, and pain exploded through her nervous system so violently her vision whitened for half a second.

She hit the ground hard, rolling across it before quickly getting back up as the poison immediately began eating through her armor and skin.

Sophia took an instinctive step forward, panic written across her face. "Amara, your shoulder—!"

"I’m fine!" she lied. The skin around the impact points had already begun blackening and Corruption advanced slowly now. More confident as it stalked her, no longer attacking wildly.

The venom on her shoulder burned with every movement, spreading slowly through her system and weakening her.

However, it wasn’t as aggressive as Maya’s necrosis, and Amara wasn’t going to give Corruption the satisfaction of seeing her in pain.

"You adapt fasst," it hissed. "But remind me... what was that promise of yours again?"

"Go to hell." Amara tightened her grip on Angel’s Bane and forced herself forward again despite the pain screaming through her muscles.

This time she attacked first, swinging in a diagonal slash.

Corruption blocked with two arms, but that was what Amara hoped it would do.

She abruptly reversed the blade midway through the strike, using the momentum to spin low beneath its guard, severing one of its legs clean off.

Black ichor exploded outward and Corruption staggered, its balance compromised.

"She baited the block..." Sophia took a deep breath as her eyes went wide with realization.

"That she did," Maya said with a stunned look on her pale face.

Amara pressed the advantage instantly. She moved faster now, more aggressive, more dangerous as every adaptation compounded on the last.

She slipped between the Malice’s six arms and carved black wounds across its torso faster than it could regenerate them, completely overwhelming it with multiple slashes.

Angel’s Bane carved through another arm before the limb could fully regenerate and Amara’s relentless assault forced it entirely onto the defensive.

That was when it stopped using its arms entirely.

This was it.

The Malice must have given up, Amara thought. Unfortunately, she noticed the movement too late.

Something black blurred in Amara’s peripheral vision. Something she hadn’t expected because Corruption had never made use of it before, and she had no idea it was even prehensile.

No, it wasn’t a seventh arm. But with the way it moved, it might as well have been.

Its tail whipped around with horrifying dexterity and coiled around both her legs like a constrictor, binding them together instantly.

Amara’s eyes widened. "What—"

YANK.

The tail ripped her balance out from under her and she crashed onto her back.

Without hesitation, Corruption moved. All six arms raised high and came down together in a single catastrophic strike with only one intention behind them.

Angel’s Bane barely intercepted four arms. But the fifth claw ripped across her stomach, and the sixth slashed directly through her torso from shoulder to hip.

"Amara!" Sophia screamed.

Blood sprayed across the chamber and Amara’s body skidded violently across the stone floor before crashing hard into a pillar, cracking it in the process.

After a brief moment of silence, Corruption slowly straightened. Blood dripped from its claws and Its six eyes stared at Amara’s motionless body with cold satisfaction.

"You see now?" it said calmly. "Even adaptation has limits."

"No... no no no..." Sophia’s breathing broke apart into shallow, panicked gasps as tears threatened to spill from her eyes. "This is all my fault," she said, placing both hands over her face. "This is... fuck! So fucking useless!"

Maya’s face had grown more pale as she stared at the wounds on Amara’s body. "That poison..." she whispered. Then she turned to Sophia. "Sophia, whatever happens, it has been my pleasure."

Across the chamber, through the spawn-infested darkness separating the eastern and central caverns, Dante and Yelena were still fighting. Too far away and preoccupied to offer any aid.

They were alone and on a timer, and Corruption knew this as it began walking slowly toward Amara’s fallen body like she was a wounded prey. Now more than ever certain of its victory.

"That slash carried enough concentrated toxin to unmake your body, spirit, soul, and mind simultaneously," it explained with a sadistic smile.

"Do you feel it?" Corruption asked softly as it approached Amara more slowly now, savoring every step. "Your organs failing." It took another step. "Your spirit unraveling... your very existence coming apart."

Its gaze shifted toward Sophia specifically, deliberately twisting the knife. "And she will die knowing she failed to protect you. That her promise was empty. That her strength meant nothing."

Amara felt it from where she lay, something invading her body, burrowing through skin, and seeking vital organs. This wasn’t just any disease. It was anti-life corruption unmaking her on a physical, spiritual, and mental level.

Stay with me, Amara, Sophia’s voice reached out telepathically, and the connection carried Amara’s pain so vividly it almost made Sophia throw up. Please stay with me.

Sophia, Amara thought weakly, each mental word taking tremendous effort. It hurts so much. Please... keep talking. Don’t let me... alone...

I’m here, alright? Sophia wiped her face roughly with the back of her hands, smearing tears across her cheeks. I’m here and I’m not fucking going anywhere. You hear me?
