BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP...

The sound hollowed out the entire cabin. And in that terrible moment of silence, nobody moved.

Suddenly, Sophia grabbed onto the side railing of the transport jet for balance. But there was something different in her eyes now.

Her trembling hands reached toward the band around her wrist and she yanked it free with her teeth before shakily gathering her loose hair behind her head and tying it.

Amara sat up, watching her. Sophia only ever did that when she needed absolute concentration.

"Sophia..." Hiro started cautiously. But she ignored him completely as she slowed down her breathing. Then her golden eyes ignited.

A pulse of psychic energy rippled outward through the cabin, subtle but powerful enough to make the lights above flicker. Sophia slowly lifted one hand toward Maya’s chest.

The long continuous tone from the monitor still sounded through the jet.

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.

At that point, one of the medics moved to stop her, but another grabbed his arm.

"Wait. Look." He pointed. On the monitor, the flatline was moving again.

BEEP.

BEEP.

BEEP.

One of the medics looked down sharply at the monitor. "Woah."

Another medic rushed over. "Heart activity returning!"

Amara’s eyes widened as Sophia’s fingers curled slightly in the air like she was physically gripping something invisible. And in a way... she was.

Her telekinesis plunged inward with precision, bypassing skin, muscle, bone and tissue until it reached Maya’s failing heart directly.

Then it squeezed. Pumping and releasing repeatedly. Like an invisible psychic hand manually forcing Maya’s heart to beat.

Sophia’s entire body trembled with effort as sweat began rolling down her face almost immediately.

At the same time, golden psychic energy spread through Maya’s bloodstream, pushing against the black necrosis crawling toward her heart. Holding it back and keeping death at arm’s length.

"She’s manually maintaining cardiac function," one medic whispered in disbelief. "That level of fine control should be impossible at her level..."

"No," another corrected quietly while staring at Sophia. "It’s just insanely difficult."

Sophia grit her teeth harder as her nose began bleeding again almost instantly, but she didn’t stop.

BEEP.

BEEP.

BEEP.

"It’s stabilizing!" a medic shouted. "Blood pressure rising!"

"Necrosis progression slowing!" another medic said enthusiastically. "Keep doing exactly what you’re doing!"

Sophia didn’t answer or pay them any heed. Every ounce of her concentration was focused into Maya’s body and into keeping her heart beating.

Amara watched her silently as the jet raced across the night sky toward the Institute, and Sophia stood motionless in the center of the cabin, still pumping.

Outside the windows, dawn was beginning to bleed slowly into the horizon.

Eventually, the pilot’s voice crackled through the intercom. "Alpha Beam in range... locked in." He began flipping switches. "Initiating teleport in three... two... one..."

Space folded instantly as the world distorted. In a blink, they were somewhere else. The hangar doors of Sun branch opened before them as emergency teams rushed forward.

The moment the jet landed, Maya’s stretcher burst out first.

"Move move move!" someone shouted. "Critical patient incoming!"

Sophia’s invisible hand released immediately and she nearly collapsed the second the medics took over.

Thankfully, Raj was right there to catch her before she hit the floor.

"You good?" he asked.

"...no," she answered honestly.

And in a blur of movement, Maya was gone, wheeled away through double doors that hissed shut behind her.

Four hours later, the Five sat together inside one of the Institute’s recovery lounges, where exhaustion hung over the room like fog.

No one had bothered to change clothes and the thought of sleeping never crossed their minds. Because of that, everyone still looked half-dead.

Finally, a senior medical agent emerged from the room and stood before them, holding a tablet. "Maya is stable," he said carefully.

Just like that, the tension in the room loosened slightly.

"But..."

Immediately it returned.

"The corruption spread too deeply through her left arm. We managed to stop the necrosis before it reached her heart thanks to Sophia’s intervention..."

His eyes briefly shifted toward Sophia, then returned back to them in general. "...but her arm could not be saved."

"What do you mean could not be saved?" Hiro asked.

But the truth was, everyone knew what that meant.

"We had to amputate below the shoulder," the medic answered anyway.

Raj looked down immediately. Ethan leaned back slowly into his chair. And Hiro rubbed a hand over his face.

The medic continued carefully. "We can provide a prosthetic replacement once she recovers. A highly advanced one. She’ll regain near-full functionality over time."

"But she’s fine... she’ll be okay?" Amara asked quietly.

He sighed softly before looking at her. "You shouldn’t blame yourselves for this," he said. "None of you should. What happened down there exceeded the projected mission parameters at every level."

His gaze softened a bit. "You survived something most agents wouldn’t."

Amara was quiet for a moment. Then she looked sideways toward Sophia sitting alone near the far end of the room. "You should probably tell her that."

Everyone followed her gaze.

Sophia sat curled slightly inward on the couch, staring at the floor. Her breathing was slow and her fingers gripped onto her sleeve too tightly as she avoided meeting anyone’s eyes.

The medic’s expression tightened, sighing. "The Director wants to see you all within the next hour. Conference Room A." Then he gave a respectful nod and quietly left the room.

***

They were back in the Relaxation Center. But compared to the chaos of the cavern, this felt unnaturally calm.

Amara sat near the edge of one of the couches, elbows resting on her knees while an untouched cup of coffee cooled slowly in her hands.

Beside her, Ethan leaned back with his arms folded, staring up at the ceiling like he was trying to solve a puzzle only he could see.

Across from them, Hiro was sprawled dramatically over an entire couch, one leg hanging off the side while the other rested on top of the table in front of him.

Raj, meanwhile, was pacing. Walking back and forth near the pool table.

Hiro watched him for a few seconds before finally pointing lazily. "Nice pace game. But you need to sit down."

Raj ignored him and kept pacing.

"Raj," Hiro called, but Raj kept pacing.

"Buddy." Hiro tried again and still got no response.

Hiro then sighed deeply. "Duuude, your pacing is stressing me out, and I’m usually the one stress-pacing."

Raj stopped long enough to glare at him. "You’re giving me shit about walking around?"

Hiro pointed at himself immediately. "When I do it, it’s quirky and emotionally intelligent."

Amara snorted accidentally, unable to stop herself.

Hiro sat up slightly, gesturing with both hands now. "There’s rhythm to my pacing. A narrative structure if you will. Yours feels like you’re about to confess to a serious crime."

"That’s because Maya almost died," Raj shot back.

The room quieted again and Hiro’s expression softened. "Yeah," he said more quietly. "I know."

Raj exhaled sharply and resumed pacing anyway, slower this time.

Ethan finally glanced over. "Raj, you need to relax."

"I can’t relax," he said with his shoulders sagging now.

"None of us can," Amara muttered.

Raj dragged a hand across his face. "I just keep thinking..." He shook his head. "If Sophia hadn’t kept Maya’s heart going on that jet..."

"She’d be dead," Ethan finished quietly.

Amara stared down into her coffee. "She blames herself," she murmured. "And now, she’s locked herself in her room."

To escape the mood, Hiro suddenly pointed at Raj again. "Still think you should sit down though."

"Fine." Raj moved toward a chair, preparing to sit when he glanced over at Hiro. "Hey, didn’t you have just one bar on your leg before?"

Hiro lifted his pant leg absently, revealing the area just below his knee where two distinct black bars now marked his skin.

He stared at it for a moment. "Oh," he said. "Shit, I didn’t even realize. When did that happen?"

"I suppose congratulations are in order," Ethan said. It was genuine, but it came out hollow. "You’re a Shaper now."

For a brief moment, there was something like warmth in the room. A small victory. An acknowledgment that despite everything, they were getting stronger.

Then reality settled back in. Raj’s pacing continued. Hiro’s expression faded. And Ethan’s hand found Amara’s. The joy, whatever it had been, was already gone.

"I’m gonna go check on Sophia." Amara stood up and Ethan joined her.

"Need back up?" he asked.

"I think I can handle it." She stretched on the tip of her toes and planted a kiss on his cheek. "I’ll be fine." She walked away and headed to the direction of Sophia’s room.

When she arrived, she knocked twice, softly. "Sophia, it’s me."

"Come in," Sophia’s voice called from inside.

Before Amara had left, she told Ethan she could handle it. But from what she was seeing, she wasn’t so sure.

Sophia was sitting on her bed, still in the same clothes. Her hair was down now, messy, and her eyes looked empty.

"Almost time to see the Director," Amara said, trying for casual.

It didn’t land.

"Yeah," Sophia replied flatly.

Amara sat beside her, keeping some distance. "Hey, you know Hiro actually got his second bar? A Shaper now, actually. None of us even noticed until Raj caught it."

"That’s good for him," Sophia said. And she meant it, there was real warmth there. But her expression didn’t change. The sadness remained, settled into her features like it had moved in permanently.

"That’s good for him," Sophia repeated quietly. "That just leaves me. But no surprise there. I’m always the one holding everyone back. Always the screw-up."

Amara wanted to argue. Wanted to tell her about the impossible thing she’d done in that jet today. But she knew Sophia well enough to know that wouldn’t land right now.

Sometimes people didn’t want logic. They wanted acknowledgment. They wanted someone to sit with them in the dark for a moment.

So she tried a different approach. "Sophia—"

"It’s okay," Sophia interrupted, her voice audible but distant. "We need to see the Director right? We shouldn’t be late."

It wasn’t dismissal, exactly. It was something gentler and somehow worse. It was surrender.

Sophia stood, straightened her clothes, and looked at herself in the mirror. Amara stood too, but as they moved toward the door, she found herself thinking: How do I help her?

Because the problem wasn’t a monster they could fight or a puzzle they could solve.

The problem was that Sophia had saved Maya’s life, but was convinced that she was the reason it needed saving in the first place. And Amara had no idea how to fix that.
