Chapter 70: The Vortex Gambit!

『"Science, bitch."』

The warheads fell. Hundreds of nuclear weapons plummeting toward them like a rain of death.

"Ethan! Where’s that forcefield of yours?!" Hiro yelled, voice cracking with panic.

Ethan looked toward where the exit used to be, now buried under molten slag. Amara was out there somewhere, fighting her own battle.

He wasn’t dying here. Not before seeing her again.

"Yeah. I don’t plan on dying here," he said, voice still calm.

Forcefields began to take shape around them as concentric spheres, layering one inside the next. One, then two, then five nested barriers, each separated by a foot of space.

The first barrage of nukes hit, generating an explosion that compressed everything terrible into a single moment.

Light brighter than the sun. Heat that turned stone to glass. A shockwave that should have obliterated them instantly.

The barriers cracked, reformed, and cracked again. Ethan’s nose started bleeding from the strain, vision blurring as another barrage slammed into it.

Five rained down, then ten, then dozens simultaneously. Each impact testing the limits of what his belief could maintain.

This is nothing, he thought desperately, pouring everything into that single conviction. The shields had to hold.

The last nuke detonated. And when the fire finally died and the dust settled, the three of them stood completely unharmed inside a perfect sphere of untouched ground with normal air and temperature.

Outside Ethan’s sphere, the contrast was surreal. The chamber had become hell. Walls melted into rivers of molten rock. The floor sagged, superheated. The ceiling dripped liquid.

Ethan swayed dangerously, and Raj caught him before he could fall. "Easy, man. I got you."

"I’m starting to think this is all I’m good for," Ethan chuckled as blood ran from his nose and his hands shook. "I think I’ll need more than a second."

Hiro stared at it all, laughing in disbelief as he paced back and forth within the forcefield. "Nukes—he—he dropped nukes on us! On us! Who even does that?!"

His hands flailed wildly. "I mean, I was expecting claws or fire breath or something, not freaking Hiroshima and Nagasaki!"

Ethan’s eyes moved toward him calmly. "Focus." Then his gaze shifted back to where the War Malice stood beyond the destruction. "We haven’t won yet."

War stood, completely unharmed thanks to its radiation aura, watching them through the translucent barrier. "Your forcefield is a desperate, fragile, and ultimately insufficient attempt at survival."

It began manifesting more warheads, one by one, they materialized mid-air. "Let’s see if that attempt holds again."

"It won’t," Hiro said quietly, staring at the new weapons forming as he paced frantically, fingers twitching like he was working through calculations in the air. "Ethan’s shields can’t take another barrage like that. They’ll break and we’ll die."

"Thanks for the encouraging words," Ethan muttered. "I’m guessing you have a plan?"

Hiro’s eyes went distant, unfocused, seeing something beyond the immediate threat.

"Radiation," he said suddenly, gesturing with his hands. "It’s just ionized particles, right? Charged energy emitted from radioactive decay. Alpha, beta, gamma rays—all moving, knocking electrons loose via kinetic force."

Raj raised an eyebrow, glancing between Hiro and the steadily increasing number of warheads materializing above them. "Hiro, buddy, not the time for a physics lecture—"

"No, listen!" He spoke with frenzy. "They’re just particles. Moving. And I can control motion to a degree. Y’know, picked up a thing or two from my training with Ishigami. And I gotta say, he’s really not that bad—"

"Hiro," Ethan pulled him back. "Get to the point."

Above them, more nuclear warheads continued to materialize. They were now twice as many as the previous round.

Meanwhile, Hiro’s entire form began to crackle with red electricity, beginning from his ankles. "If I run fast enough, create a vortex, I believe I can strip the kinetic energy from the radiation itself. Render it inert. Neutralize the aura."

Ethan’s eyes widened with understanding. "And the warheads. Think you could trap them in the vortex?"

"My man." Hiro’s lips quivered with a shaky grin. "Contain the blasts, redirect the energy back at War over there. Use its own weapons against it."

He took a deep breath, the electricity around him intensifying. "Worst case scenario, I explode in a nuclear fireball and take you all with me. Best case scenario, we don’t all die... and maybe damage this thing."

"I vote for not dying," Raj said.

"Seconded," Ethan agreed, pushing himself up, then proceeded to lower his shields. "Do it."

War watched with curiosity as Ethan’s shield lowered. A moment later, its voice rumbled through the tunnel.

"Your strategies won’t save you. Nothing you attempt can prevent the inevitable. I am war eternal. I am the ending of all things through conflict. I am—"

"Yeah, yeah, you’re very scary and impressive and eternal," Hiro interrupted, crouching low like a sprinter at the starting blocks. Red lightning arced between his boots and the ground. "Here’s the thing about inevitability though."

He grinned, and for just a moment looked completely insane. "It’s really, really slow."

Acceleron erupted with more power than Hiro had ever channeled before and he shot forward in a massive burst of speed that displaced air into a deafening shockwave.

A shockwave Ethan had to shield himself and Raj from.

The world blurred into streaks of color and the chamber became a smear of grey and black. War’s massive form looked almost frozen, moving in slow motion as Hiro accelerated past normal perception.

He could see it now—the radiation that everyone else couldn’t.

To Raj and Ethan, War’s protective aura was invisible, just heat and death radiating from its body.

But to Hiro, moving fast enough to perceive individual photons, the radiation appeared as threads, lazy streams of green and red energy crawling off the Malice’s form like luminescent smoke and fireflies.

He extended his hand as he ran, feeling for the kinetic signature of the particles, the motion that made them lethal. Then he pulled, stealing their momentum, draining their velocity, and canceling their motion.

The vortex formed around War, a crimson cyclone of speed and light that wrapped the Malice like a cocoon.

Inside, the radiation particles slowed, their motion stolen, their energy drained. The green and red threads faded to black and disappeared.

War’s roar shook the entire tunnel system, rage and disbelief mixed together. "YOU DARE—"

"Me," Hiro confirmed, leaning harder into the acceleration, pushing past limits he didn’t know existed. Limits that weren’t meant to be broken by someone in his rank. "And I dare." He moved faster. And faster. And faster.

The vortex tightened as air pressure dropped catastrophically inside the cyclone. War’s body began to crack, its armor developing stress fractures as its own protective aura collapsed inward, turned against it.

And above, the newly formed warheads were caught by the vortex’s pull and sucked into the cyclone, spinning wildly out of control as air pressure twisted violently.

"Ethan!" Hiro’s voice was strained, the effort of maintaining this speed and vortex pushing him so far past his limits that he could feel his muscles and cells literally tearing themselves apart. "Barrier... War! Contain blast!"

Ethan threw his hands forward and translucent domes took shape, trapping War, the vortex, and every nuclear warhead inside. And just before it fully enclosed, Hiro burst out of the vortex at the last possible second.

The warheads detonated. But instead of exploding outward, the blast was trapped as the explosion bent in on itself rather than expand, Hiro’s vortex folding the energy back toward the Malice.

All that nuclear fire, all that destruction, compressed, contained, and forced inward in an explosion that shook the tunnel so violently, cracks spread through solid bedrock.

The temperature spiked as light bled through the cracks in Ethan’s barrier, searingly bright for a few seconds before shattering with so much force, it unleashed a shockwave.

The backlash threw all three of them backward, tumbling through the underground chamber until they crashed against stone.

Hiro’s vortex collapsed the instant he hit the wall. Between Raj and Ethan, he dropped to the ground, gasping for air.

Every muscle and cell in his body felt like it was on fire, torn apart from channeling that much kinetic energy at once.

His entire body twitched violently, muscles spasming with overuse. But he mustered just enough energy to raise one shaking fist in triumph. "Science... bitch!" he wheezed.

Then he passed out completely.

Smoke filled the tunnel, and when it cleared, War was on one knee.

Its armor was cracked, molten leaking through the gaps like blood. One massive arm hung at an odd angle, damaged by its own weapons as its chest heaved with labored breathing.

This was the first real damage they had dealt the Malice since the fight began.

"Impossible," it wheezed.

"We just did," Raj said, and despite the pain wracking his body, despite being exhausted and burned and broken, he smiled. "So what now, big guy? Ready for round two?"

War stared at them for a long moment. Then, slowly, it began to laugh. "I commend your desperation."

It pushed itself upright with visible effort as its arm braced against the wall for support and its leg trembled. "You have earned the right to believe you stopped me."

Its form began to shift and dissolve into the shadow. "Prepare and stand ready. For when I return, our war will be glorious."

"Wait—" Ethan tried to push forward, but War was already fading, retreating into darkness that seemed to swallow it whole.

Its final words echoed through the tunnel, "And then we’ll see who’s truly inevitable."

Then it was gone, vanished as if it had never been there at all.

The tunnel fell silent except for their ragged breathing and the distant sound of molten rock cooling.

"Did we..." Hiro mumbled weakly from where he lay unconscious—except apparently not quite unconscious enough to stop talking. "Did we just win?"

"I’ll take it," Ethan sighed, slumping against the wall and sliding down until he was sitting.

Raj let out a tired, slightly hysterical laugh that echoed in the ruined tunnel. After a moment, Ethan joined him. Then Hiro, even with being mostly unconscious, managed a weak giggle.

With the retreat of War, Amara’s voice suddenly crackled through the restored comms, sounding breathless and urgent. "Ethan! Hiro! Raj! Do you copy?!"

Ethan forced himself upright, grabbing his comm device. "We’re here. War retreated. We’re..." He looked at Hiro, barely conscious on the ground, and Raj covered in healing radiation burns. "We’re good. What about Plague?"

There was a short, terrified pause. Then Amara’s voice came back. "It’s... it’s changed, Ethan. It’s turned into something worse— we need you—" Her voice was cut-off by static.

Raj, Hiro, and Ethan exchanged glances. "We go help them," Raj decided.

Hiro groaned. "We can barely move," he pointed out from the ground, one eye cracking open. "I literally can’t feel my legs."

Ethan didn’t say anything. He just forced himself up with a pained grunt, already moving toward the sealed tunnel exit. And that was all Hiro needed.

With a tired sigh, he dragged himself off the ground. "Fine. Let’s go save the girls." Standing upright now he looked ahead. "War’s attack sealed up this place. What now?"

Ethan looked back at him and grinned. "Then I guess we better start digging."
