Chapter 72: Toxic (II).

『"A Malice like you should wear a warning..."』

The tendril erupted from the floor beneath Sophia’s feet. Fortunately for her, Maya caught on quickly, shoving Sophia out of the way. Unfortunately for Maya, the tendril found her arm instead.

It wrapped around Maya’s left arm, just for an instant, before Amara sliced it off. The contact was long enough to make Maya gasp sharply, stumbling back.

Black veins instantly began spreading from the wound, necrosis crawling rapidly up her forearm.

"No," Maya breathed, staring at her arm in horror. The flesh was already dying, cells breaking down, tissue turning black. The rot spread visibly, climbing from wrist toward elbow.

"Maya!" Sophia scrambled to her feet, rushing forward.

"Stay back!" Maya snapped, holding her good hand out. "It’s contagious right now." She looked down at her arm with grim focus as the flesh continued to blacken.

Sophia stammered. "Can’t—can’t you do that thing? That internal energy flow thing you just taught me? Push your Awakener energy through and—and burn it out like you said?"

"Maybe if I were a Tyrant, love," she said. "Tyrants have six times the energy reserves of Shapers. I can slow it down, but..." She groaned as the necrosis advanced. "It’s not looking good for me."

"What about—Can’t I just—" Sophia gestured helplessly. "Pull it out? Extract the infected cells?"

"It’s not a foreign object," Maya said. "It’s my own cells dying, turning against me. And no offense," her jaw clenched as she let out a muffled groan, "even if it was possible, you’re definitely not on that level yet."

Her lantern flared, and golden light wrapped around the infected arm. The necrosis slowed, but it didn’t stop, fighting against her healing as Maya’s face went pale with effort.

"I’ve got it contained," she said through clenched teeth. "But I can’t maintain full barriers and heal simultaneously. You two need to handle offense."

Plague laughed from beneath the stalactite, then began pushing the massive stone off its body with a renewed strength. It could smell victory now.

"Shall I finish her?" it hissed, eyes gleaming. "Or shall I let the rot do its work?"

"Neither," Amara said coldly, stepping forward to put herself between Plague and Maya. "Sophia, can you reinforce Maya’s barriers? I’ll handle this thing."

"Amara, you can’t fight it alone—"

"I’m not alone. I have you watching my back." Amara’s grip tightened on Angel’s Bane until the weapon hummed. "And this thing is nothing but a slithering, sniveling coward."

She stared directly at Plague as it finally pushed the stalactite aside and rose to its full height.

"I know your kind," Amara said, her voice dropping. "All disease is. You prey on the weak, the vulnerable, the defenseless. You spread through cowardice. But you know what?"

Her eyes blazed brighter. "I’m none of those things. I’m going to cut you apart piece by piece until there’s nothing left to infect anyone."

She took off, boots cracking the corrupted ground beneath her feet as she sprinted toward the Malice with Angel’s Bane raised high.

Her blade came down in an arc designed to bisect Plague from shoulder to hip, a perfect diagonal cut with all her momentum behind it. But the strike passed through vapor, hitting nothing solid.

Plague had dissolved at the last possible instant, becoming a cloud of microscopic organisms that scattered before reforming ten feet behind her.

"You can’t cut what has no solid form, Sword. I am disease eternal. I am the rot between cells, the decay within flesh. How do you ssstrike what cannot be touched?" It said with confidence.

Amara was already turning, twisting the hilt in her grip and sweeping the blade through where Plague materialized. This time, her blade connected, biting into something solid.

Black ichor sprayed from the wound, hissing when it hit stone, and Plague shrieked in pain, solidifying fully. "You—how—"

"You’re not as formless as you’d want me to think," Amara said. "You simply switch between states. Solid to vapor to liquid. But there’s always a transition moment. A fraction of a second where you’re vulnerable, where you must become physical before becoming incorporeal."

Her eyes tracked every subtle shift in Plague’s form, predicting when it would shift, striking during those microsecond windows of solidity. "I can see those moments. Which means I can cut them."

Plague screamed and tried to retreat, but Amara was faster now, her reflexes sharpening with every exchange, her movements becoming more precise, her timing more perfect.

Every strike forced Plague to defend instead of attack. Every cut made it retreat.

With each clash, Amara’s speed increased beyond what should be humanly possible as her body adapted to the rhythm of combat, evolving mid-fight.

"Impossible," Plague hissed, backing toward the chamber wall, its confidence cracking. "You weren’t this fassst before—"

"I learn quickly," Amara replied simply, and struck again.

This time, the blade carved through Plague’s torso, leaving a wound that leaked black sludge. The Malice stumbled, its form flickering between states uncontrollably—solid, vapor, liquid, unable to maintain any of them properly.

Behind her, Sophia maintained a telekinetic field around Maya. "Don’t let your guard down. One hit from this thing and you’re done."

"You think I don’t know that?" Amara shot back, never taking her eyes off the wounded Malice.

Plague’s form began to shift again, but not into vapor. This was something else entirely.

Its body started folding in on itself, collapsing inward like a star going supernova in reverse.

Every virus, every bacterium, every pathogen collected from millennia of human suffering all began to merge at a cellular level. Fusing and combining into a single unified entity.

"If I am to die," Plague’s voice distorted, becoming layered, echoing with a thousand different tones, "then I shall become death perfected."

Its body solidified into something new. More flesh than smoke now, covered in a dark hardened shell that glistened with toxin and a tail that swayed behind it.

Its six eyes now wept continuous streams of varied poisons, each eye producing a different disease in liquid form.

To match, arms multiplied as two became four became six, each one ending in claws that dripped with concentrated toxins.

The transformation was completed, and it stood at least nine feet tall now, radiating an aura of pure pestilence that made its previous attacks feel like minor inconveniences.

Sophia’s telekinetic barriers immediately began developing stress fractures just from proximity to the new form. "What... what is that thing?"

"That’s every known disease merged into a single entity," Maya said weakly, still fighting the necrosis spreading up her arm. "The concentration alone is—" She couldn’t finish, pain stealing her words.

The transformed Malice was no longer merely Plague, but something that transcended that simple name.

"Corruption," it said, its voice now deeper. "That is what I have become. The ultimate expression of disease."

It turned all six weeping eyes toward Amara specifically, and the contempt was palpable. "You won’t call me coward when my hands are wrapped around your throat and your organs are liquefying from within, little Sword."

It took one heavy step forward and the ground beneath its foot blackened and cracked, corruption spreading from the point of contact in a perfect circle.

"Come then," Corruption said, beckoning with all six arms in an invitation.
