Chapter 67: All Goes Wrong!

『"When it all goes wrong. I’ll take my sword, I’ll keep on holding on..."』

The path to Level Three was a maze of maintenance tunnels and service passages. The corruption here was so thick it had become part of the very architecture.

The walls and floors were now composed of solidified darkness and organic matter. It was like walking through the digestive system of some massive creature.

During their descent, Amara stopped abruptly, raising one fist. "Tripwire," she said quietly, pointing to a nearly invisible line stretched across the corridor at ankle height.

Following it with her eyes, she found the payload, connected to a crude explosive packed into a wall cavity.

"Okay, this just keeps getting weirder and weirder," Hiro said, carefully stepping over the wire. "First they try to jump us, now they’re setting traps?"

"Glad to know I’m not the only one freaking out about this," Raj muttered, his eyes constantly scanning for threats.

"But why set traps?" Sophia asked, voicing the question that had been bothering Amara.

Amara took a moment to process, then she looked at Sophia. "You think they’re trying to buy time?"

"Yeah..." Ethan said. "But the real question is why?"

The question was left unanswered as they carried on, eventually reaching the final stairwell that was a spiral descent plunging into darkness so complete even Maya’s lantern struggled against it.

"Level Three," Maya announced quietly. "Mission objective below. Whatever’s down there, it’s big. I can feel the energy signature from here."

Amara felt it too. A pressure against her senses, like standing too close to a bonfire. Angel’s Bane hummed warnings, but also... eagerness? The sword wanted to cut whatever waited below.

"Standard formation for the descent," Amara said, surprised by how calm her voice sounded. "Once we hit Level Three, I take point. Ethan shields rear. We go in fast, hit the core hard. Questions?"

The other four members of the Five shook their heads, faces set with determination that was only slightly undermined by visible fear.

Amara turned to Unit 11-B, acknowledging that they were the more experienced team here. "What’s your call?"

Dante shrugged and said, "I guess we can follow your call. Not bad dreamer. Or should I say Shaper now."

Beside him, Maya and Yelena nodded their agreement.

Amara nodded as well and took a deep breath, looking ahead. "Then let’s finish this."

With that, they descended into Level Three.

The stairwell seemed to go on forever, spiraling down and down into darkness. Amara counted steps as they moved, trying to maintain some sense of spatial orientation. Fifty. One hundred. One hundred fifty. Two hundred.

How deep were they now? Three hundred meters? More?

Finally, the stairs ended, and they emerged onto Level Three.

Amara had expected more darkness, more claustrophobic corridors, more oppressive decay. But unlike the other levels, this place was surprisingly illuminated by the glow of machinery.

It wasn’t just the light. It was so vast that Amara subconsciously held her breath for a moment as she took in just how big it was down here.

This massive cavern was easily the size of three football fields placed side by side, carved from solid bedrock. The ceiling arched high above them, maybe fifty meters up, supported by natural stone pillars.

But it wasn’t necessarily the size that stole her breath. It was what occupied the center of the cavern.

"Heavens," Amara exhaled slowly.

The nest.

It was an enormous structure built from corruption and darkness. Massive tendrils spread from it like roots or blood vessels, burrowing into walls, floor, ceiling, connecting everything into one massive organic network.

And at the heart of the nest, visible through translucent layers of membrane that pulsed was the core. A sphere maybe ten feet across, swirling with concentrated darkness.

But worse... so much worse... were the mechanical components.

Tubes. Metal tubes with Institute markings, sticking into the organic core like IV drips, all of them connected to a massive device positioned behind the sphere.

The machine was clearly incomplete, missing panels and components, but the design was unmistakable to anyone who’d seen it before.

"Ethan..." Amara said, her voice hollow. "Is that—"

"Yeah," Ethan confirmed, his face had gone pale.

Hiro’s head whipped between them anxiously. "Is what what?! What is it?! Why do you both look like you’ve seen a ghost?!"

"What are you seeing?" Maya asked sharply, moving closer.

Amara took a step forward, Angel’s Bane trembling in her grip. "It’s the machine from the Clam. The one designed to drain energy from Awakeners."

Before anyone could vocalize the horror of that realization, Sophia pointed, already several steps ahead of them. "Is that a face?" she whispered with horror in her voice.

It was. A massive face, twisted in agony or ecstasy or both, with its mouth open. The features were distorted and wrong, but unmistakably the same face they’d seen weeks ago.

From that mouth, they watched as eggs emerged, covered in translucent membrane, spilling free and rolling across the corrupted floor like maggots being birthed from a corpse.

"The Darkness Malice," Maya breathed. "It’s not dead. It’s... gestating. Building a new body."

"Must be contingency plan," Yelena said. "It knew it might be defeated. So it seeded these spawn with its essence. Now they’re rebuilding it, stronger than before."

Amara stared at the abomination. "How long until it completes?"

"Unknown," Maya’s voice was tight. "But if it finishes, we’ll have a fully manifested Bishop-class Malice inside Tokyo. Again."

Hiro started pacing in a circle. "Okay, okay, okay... if I had to guess, and I’m really hoping I’m wrong about this, but I’d say it’s missing one key ingredient to actually pull off this whole horrific resurrection thing."

He gestured wildly at the nest. "And we may have just hand-delivered that ingredient directly to it like idiots bringing groceries to a monster."

"And what’s that?" Dante asked, though his expression suggested he already had a clue.

Amara held her chin, looking down as she thought. "Awakener energy," she whispered, then lifted her face and repeated louder with certainty. "It needs Awakener energy."

She closed her eyes, the final piece clicking into place. "That’s why the machine is here. That’s why we were lured down here. We’re not some extermination team... we’re fuel."

Hiro snapped his fingers and pointed at her. "Exactly! And by my count—" He did rapid mental math, gesturing at each of them. "—we’ve just delivered eight Awakeners directly to its doorstep."

"Then we just destroy it all," Raj said simply. "Right now. Before—"

Every spawn in the cavern turned to look at them all at once. Like a switch had been flipped.

Amara realized with horror that what she’d mistaken for corrupted walls were actually spawn packed so tightly together they looked like part of the environment.

The core, or Darkness Malice, whatever it was, must have been masking their presence with its own energy signature, while birthing more.

Hundreds of them. No... thousands, the spawns were everywhere, coating the walls, hanging from the ceiling, emerging from the eggs, and they all oriented toward Team Delta with perfect synchronization.

The Institute had failed greatly with its estimate of how much spawns could be hatched.

And from the core itself, something spoke, not with actual words, but directly into their minds, Sophia hearing it more loudly than the rest.

FOOLISH. YOU CANNOT STOP REBIRTH. YOU CAN ONLY DIE WITNESSING IT. The voice was malevolent beyond human comprehension.

SO THANK YOU FOR COMING. IT SAVES ME THE TROUBLE OF FINDING ONE OF YOU... AWAKENERS.

The spawn charged as one unified mass. And behind them, from the darkness of the tunnel they’d just descended, Amara felt something else approaching.

If these were more spawns, they’d be screwed, because it meant their escape was cut off and they were being boxed in.

But it wasn’t spawns.

Two massive presences appeared on her senses, each one radiating power that dwarfed anything she’d felt before.

Not a spawn... obviously.

Not the Darkness Malice either. It was still rebuilding its form within the core.

This was something that felt worse.

"Maya," Amara said quietly, her voice barely audible over the approaching spawn horde. "I think we have a problem."

Maya’s face had gone pale, staring at her scanner. "That’s impossible. Those signatures... the projections said we had twelve weeks before—"

Maya could barely finish her sentence. "It’s just been three weeks." Her hand went over her mouth.

The cavern’s far wall exploded inward. Through the destruction, two nightmares entered.

One was disease given form. A creeping nightmare spawned from the collective terror, contempt, and negative emotions of every sentient being’s association with the idea of sickness and contamination, from every plague and pandemic and infection that had ever ravaged civilization.

Its skin was covered in pustules and lesions, each one weeping something that made the air itself sicken. Where it walked, the ground rotted. Where it breathed, decay spread.

Plague. The Malice of Disease.

The other was horror born from the collective despair, dread and hatred of nuclear war and atomic bombs.

It was massive and armoured in what seemed to be jagged stone, bone and fire. Every growl vibrated through their bones. Its very presence made violence feel inevitable, unavoidable.

War. The Malice of Nuclear Conflict.

Plague and War. Two Bishop-class Malices. Arriving months ahead of schedule. Standing between Team Delta and any escape route.

The spawn horde reached them first and Maya’s voice cracked through comms, stripped of its usual control.

"Director, this is Team Delta. We have multiple Bishop-class contacts. I repeat, MULTIPLE Bishop-class. Requesting immediate—"

The War Malice released what seemed to be an electromagnetic pulse from its form and the communication devices died with it.

They were alone now. Three hundred meters below Tokyo and trapped between a horde of spawn and two Bishop-class Malices.

For a moment despair threatened to crush Amara under its weight. This was it. This was how they died. Overwhelmed, consumed, and their energy drained to fuel a monster’s rebirth.

Then she looked at her team. At how they all readied themselves for a fight, and suddenly the despair transformed into pure, crystalline defiance.

With no backup coming. With the Darkness Malice currently rebuilding its form. Amara raised Angel’s Bane, and despite the terror threatening to choke her, she smiled.

"Alright guys," she said. "This is usually the part where we cut to the theme music and do something impossibly cool."

The War Malice looked directly at her, its horrific features looking almost amused. Then it charged, and hell descended in full.
