Chapter 60: We Suck Young Blood.
『"Are they strung up by the wrist?"』
Amara’s blade moved on pure instinct, cutting through the first vampire’s neck, watching as the head tumbled free. The body collapsed, already beginning to turn gray and crumble like dust.
Two more came from her left, moving faster, but Ethan’s shields intercepted them mid-leap, barriers manifesting with enough kinetic force to slam both vampires into a support pillar so hard that it shattered their skulls.
Meredith stomped her foot, and the ground itself rose to grab one vampire’s legs, stone flowing up to encapsulate and trap it in place while Amara delivered a clean decapitation.
"Northwest corner!" Amara called, cutting her way through the swarm with brutal efficiency. "Meredith, we need a path!"
Meredith nodded, raising both hands, and the ground began to vibrate before flowing outward, forming a corridor that funneled the vampires away from where the human hostages lay.
Amara and Ethan sprinted through the opening, reaching the corner where two humans were strung up by their wrists, barely conscious—a teenage girl, maybe sixteen, and a young man in his twenties.
Both were deathly pale, skin almost translucent, with multiple bite marks covering their necks and arms in a grotesque pattern.
Amara severed the razor thin rope holding them up. From what she observed, if anymore weight was added to it, their hands would have been taken clean off. So no matter what, the hostages had to stay just conscious enough to remain standing.
She dropped beside the girl, pressing two fingers against her throat, and her pulse was barely there.
The teenage girl weakly grabbed Amara’s arm, and Amara immediately covered the girl’s hand with her own.
"You’re safe," she whispered, though she wasn’t sure the girl could hear her. "We’ve got you. You’re going to be okay." The girl’s grip was so weak it barely registered.
"Survivors confirmed," she reported into the comm. "Maya, we need immediate medical extraction, northwest corner."
"En route," Maya confirmed. "Hold position. Thirty seconds out."
Medical were staged at the perimeter, waiting for the all-clear.
But the vampires weren’t giving them thirty seconds.
"Team Two, what’s your status?" Hiro’s voice crackled through the comm. "Because all the vampires on our end just started running—"
"Yeah, that’s because they’re all coming here," Ethan interrupted.
"Every single one just changed direction like someone flipped a switch," Maya said through the comms, monitoring movements through the thermal sensors.
Amara’s stomach dropped as understanding hit. The vampires weren’t just attacking randomly now. They were being coordinated and directed toward the most vulnerable target.
Toward the hostages her team was protecting.
"Protect the survivors," Meredith said, stepping forward with grim determination. "I’ll clear the room."
Ethan nodded and threw up a forcefield around Amara, himself, and the two unconscious civilians. The barrier encompassed everything except Meredith, who stood alone between them and the approaching horde.
Vampires began to flood in from every entrance, every shadow, every possible angle. At least twenty of them, moving with terrifying speed, and a coordination that suggested something intelligent was directing them.
Meredith stomped the ground, causing the floor beneath a cluster of vampires to suddenly become quicksand, pulling them down.
They shrieked, clawing at solid ground, but the stone kept flowing, tightening, and crushing until bones cracked and bodies collapsed into themselves.
Other vampires saw this and adapted, leaping onto walls, scuttling across the ceiling like horrific spiders, approaching from above where the ground couldn’t reach them.
But it didn’t matter.
Massive stone spikes erupted from the walls and ceiling like the factory itself was attacking, skewering ninety percent of the ceiling-bound vampires mid-leap. They hung there, impaled and thrashing, before crumbling to ash.
The remaining ten percent managed to avoid the lethal forest of earth spikes, dropping directly toward Ethan’s forcefield with fangs bared and claws extended.
Ethan’s expression hardened as the barrier shifted and reshaped itself, moving upward to capture just the upper part of their bodies, while leaving the rest of it outside the protective dome.
The vampires pounded against the inside of the barrier, trapped, their bodies on the outside thrashing uselessly. Then Ethan made a fist, and the forcefield contracted.
Slice!
Three heads rolled across the floor inside the barrier, separated cleanly from bodies that fell outside and began dissolving.
By the time Meredith was finished reshaping the earth and Ethan had dispatched the stragglers, the northwest corner was secured. Vampire corpses crumbled to ash and dust around them, creating a grey powder that drifted in the air.
Medical teams appeared through a side entrance Maya had identified, rushing forward with stretchers and emergency equipment.
They got to work immediately, stabilizing the two hostages, checking vitals, administering counteragents for vampire venom.
Amara watched them work, feeling her heart rate gradually return to something approaching normal. They’d done it. First objective complete.
"Team Two, status?" she called into the comm, trying to keep her voice steady.
"Extraction successful," Raj’s voice came back, slightly breathless. "Two hostages secured. Björn crushed about five vampires with one swing of his wrecking ball before they all started converging on your position. It was very satisfying to watch."
Amara let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. "Team Three?"
"Still mobile," Hiro reported. "Most of the surviving vampires are running now... like, actually fleeing the building. They’re not stupid enough to stick around when they’re losing this badly. Should we pursue?"
"Negative," Maya’s voice cut in. "Mission objective was hostage extraction, not vampire extermination. We got all four survivors out alive. That’s a win. All teams, pull back to extraction point immediately."
They regrouped outside the factory as medical teams loaded the four survivors into armored transport vehicles.
All four were in bad shape. They were either teens or in their twenties, but what mattered was they would survive with treatment. Vampire venom could be countered if caught early enough.
"Good work," Meredith said, moving among them. "This was a clean operation. Zero casualties. All hostages extracted successfully. Vampire nest disrupted enough that they’ll abandon this location entirely."
She smiled and looked at Amara. "This is what success looks like, people. Remember this feeling. Hold onto it."
Amara felt the tension she’d been holding since the operation began finally release. Their first real mission, and they’d actually succeeded. Four people who would have died were now going to live because—
"Don’t celebrate yet," Yelena said as her expression darkened. "Something’s wrong."
"What do you mean?" Meredith asked, immediately alert.
"The vampires... they run too easily. They’re feral newborns, they should have fought to death on pure instinct." Yelena’s eyes narrowed. "They ran like they were commanded to run. Like something smarter was directing their retreat."
Amara processed this and realized Yelena had a point. There was also the part where most of the vampires had been sent directly at her team, like something intelligent was coordinating their assault.
As if summoned by her thoughts, the factory was engulfed by unnatural darkness.
Shadows erupted from every window and door, flowing and coalescing into a shape that made Angel’s bane scream warnings in her mind.
Her weapon had recognized a threat level that made everything else tonight seem trivial by comparison.
From the darkness, a tall, elegant figure emerged, radiating power that dwarfed the feral vampires they’d just fought. It felt like comparing a kitten to a tiger.
This was clearly no newborn who’d been turned two weeks ago. This was ancient.
"Hmmm..." he hummed. "The Institute thinks they can send children to my hunting ground..."
He took a deep breath loudly. "Well that just makes me livid."
