Chapter 185
To prove she was better than Chenyang in the shortest time possible, Bai Jie pulled all the strings she could during the examination process.
As a result, the test results that would have normally taken two hours were delivered to the emergency room in under forty minutes.
Bai Jie waved the stack of reports in her hand. "I’m all set on my end. What about you? Are you finished writing?"
Chenyang plucked a sheet of paper from the desk. "I’ve been finished for a while."
"So, are we comparing these directly, or should we find a referee?"
"I..."
Chenyang was about to say that he didn’t mind either way, but just as the words were on the tip of his tongue, a familiar voice suddenly called out from the doorway.
"How about I be your referee?"
Everyone turned toward the voice to see Liu Yun walking in, flanked by the young male and female doctors from before.
Bai Jie smiled and addressed her as "Master," then added meaningfully, "I’d be thrilled to have you as the referee, but I’m worried *someone* might think you’d be biased toward me since you’re my master."
Liu Yun shot her a look. "You silly girl, how dare you make a bet in front of a patient and their family? Don’t you know the hospital leadership will be furious if word of this gets out?"
"I didn’t want to, but this guy is just so arrogant."
"I don’t think he’s the arrogant one. It’s more like your competitive streak is flaring up again, isn’t it?"
"Hehe..."
"What’s so funny? I’ll deal with you later."
Liu Yun glared at Bai Jie before turning to Chenyang. "Xiaochen, what do you think?"
"Whatever Sister Liu... oh, I mean, Director Liu, decides."
"Alright. Since you both trust me, I’ll be the referee."
As she spoke, Liu Yun took the diagnoses and treatment plans from both of them.
As Liu Yun carefully compared the documents, Bai Jie crossed her arms, striking a haughty pose.
Her white lab coat was quite loose, normally making it difficult to discern her figure.
But when she assumed that posture, the fabric pulled taut, defining the full, rounded contours of her bust.
Chenyang stared, unable to stop himself from thinking, ’She’s really got the goods. Probably the same size as Aunt Qin. If only I could get my hands on them... Tsk.’
Just as he was lost in his fantasy, Bai Jie’s haughty voice cut in. "If I were you, I’d concede before the results are announced. At least that way you could save some face."
Chenyang chuckled. "What’s this? We haven’t even gotten a room yet and you’re already starting to feel bad for me?"
"Feel bad for you, my ass! I was just giving you some friendly advice."
"Then let me give you some friendly advice, too. If you concede now, I’ll try to be a little more gentle with you later."
"So you’d rather do this the hard way! We’ll see how long you can keep that tough act up." Bai Jie snorted and fell silent.
Before long, Liu Yun had finished comparing their reports and plans.
"So, how is it, Master?" Bai Jie asked eagerly.
"See for yourself. And one more thing—the last point Chenyang wrote down, keep it confidential." After handing over the papers, Liu Yun walked over to Chenyang and said in a low voice, "Bai Jie is my apprentice."
"Sister Liu, are you asking me to let her off the hook?"
"No. I’m telling you that she’s my most prized disciple, the future of the OB/GYN department. Her medical expertise is no less than my own."
Chenyang narrowed his eyes in thought. "Are you afraid this ’genius’ of yours will fall apart if she loses?"
Liu Yun nodded. "At her core, she’s prouder than anyone else in this hospital. From her school days to her career, everything has come easily to her. She’s never experienced failure or any real setbacks."
Chenyang smiled. "You sound just like a mother hen protecting her chicks."
"I’ve always been protective of my own. If the roles were reversed, I’d be protecting you too."
"It’s an honor to have someone like you watching our backs, but... being coddled like this won’t do her any good." Chenyang paused. "Sister Liu, you should understand better than anyone that the brightest talents are often the most fragile."
Hearing this, Liu Yun’s expression faltered for a moment.
After a moment’s thought, she let out a long sigh. "You have a point."
With that, she turned to Bai Jie. "You lost!"
As Bai Jie read Chenyang’s diagnostic report, her expression shifted several times.
At first, there was scorn and disdain, rooted in her belief that there was no way Chenyang’s diagnosis could be correct.
Then, when she discovered his diagnosis was far more detailed than the one she had struggled to produce with all her instruments, her look turned to one of shock.
Her surprise was mixed with frustration and indignation at the fact that Chenyang was better than her.
But when she read the final point of his diagnosis, all those complex emotions melted away, replaced by a look of utter ridicule.
"Master, I’ll admit I was a step behind on the other points, but this last one... he’s just joking, right?"
