Chapter 73: Greedy and Lecherous
Chenyang shook his head. "I’ve never had any extravagant hopes for a high salary or great benefits. For me, at this point, just becoming a licensed doctor and being able to treat patients, plain and simple, is enough."
Liu Yun frowned. "It’s no exaggeration to say your medical skills are already better than many doctors with less than five years of experience. With that kind of ability, you could absolutely command a high salary and secure some excellent benefits."
"But I can’t even get in the door of a hospital right now. How can I fantasize about all that?"
"Public hospitals do have their barriers to entry, but that’s not your only path. Once you solve the issue of your medical license, with your skills, you could go to one of the private hospitals. I’d guess the offers they’d make you would be even better than the compensation for some of our own department heads."
"Maybe, but I’ve never thought about it."
Liu Yun asked in surprise, "You haven’t thought about going to a private hospital, or you haven’t thought about being able to earn a high salary?"
Chenyang shook his head. "Neither."
"Kid, are you pulling my leg? I’ve mentored plenty of interns fresh out of school just like you, and many of them were talented with great potential. Once they got into the hospital, every single one of them dreamed of getting promoted as quickly as possible, or they’d try to negotiate for better benefits or a raise after getting praised for some achievement. But you... why do you seem completely uninterested?"
Liu Yun waved her hand. "I don’t believe there’s anyone in this world who truly doesn’t care about fame or fortune. As for that saintly maxim of medical ethics—’Better for medicine shelves to gather dust than for the world to have a single patient’—I’ve always just treated it as an old saying."
Chenyang smiled. "I’m not that noble, and I’ve never wanted to be a saint. The reason I don’t think about those things is because of what my grandfather used to say: No matter when, no matter where, no matter your talent or ability, you have to eat your food one bite at a time and climb a mountain one step at a time. If that’s how it is for ordinary people, it’s even more true for doctors."
"’Eat your food one bite at a time, climb a mountain one step at a time?’"
"That’s right. If you wolf down your food, it’s hard to feel full, and you can easily hurt your stomach. Chewing slowly, one bite at a time, is both a form of growth and a form of cultivation. It’s the same for eating as it is for climbing a mountain. If you’re in too much of a hurry to get to the top, not only can you fall, but you’re also more likely to bust your balls!"
PFFT!
Liu Yun scoffed. "How can a profound truth from a medical sage like Elder Ye sound so vulgar when it comes out of your mouth, kid?"
"It’s crude, but it’s true. Besides, my grandfather isn’t as noble as you think. That old bastard acts all sage-like and otherworldly in public, but at home, he’s all about eating, drinking, whoring, and gambling."
"For real? The old man is actually involved in things like that?"
"Heh. Who knows how many young widows in our village he’s messed with."
Liu Yun pursed her lips in a smile. "So you learned all your little tricks for flirting with women from him?"
"Ahem, that... I haven’t been flirting with anyone."
Chenyang gave an awkward grin and quickly tried to get back on topic. "Everyone yearns for a high salary and good benefits, but for a doctor just starting out like me, the most important thing is accumulating experience and honing my medical skills. Only after I’ve accumulated enough experience and raised my skills to a high enough level can I handle the wealth that comes with that position.
Otherwise, if your ability doesn’t match your position, you’ll just keep stumbling. And if your standards are high but your skills are low, it’s hard to grow into someone truly outstanding."
CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! "Well said. Whether it’s Chinese medicine or Western medicine, experience and ability are what’s most important. If you just blindly focus on the benefits and profits at the beginning, it’s hard to grow, and even harder to succeed."
Liu Yun clapped her hands, not holding back her praise. "Your medical skills are superb, and your understanding is so profound. Xiaochen, I have a feeling that bringing you into our hospital will be the best decision I’ve ever made. And in the future, you will definitely have a prominent place in Yang City’s medical community!"
"Sister Liu, please stop praising me. I’m not as good as you think. I’m an ordinary guy. I’m not competing or fighting for things now so that I can fight for more later when I’m more established. I’m greedy for money, too."
"Haha, you’re not just greedy for money. You’re lecherous, too."
"I..."
"Don’t deny it. Look at that big thing of yours... it’s sticking straight out, practically in my face."
Chenyang glanced down. He had taken a few steps forward while they were talking.
But the guy downstairs, far from settling down, had actually become even more defiant and ferocious while looking at Liu Yun’s graceful figure.
He grimaced, instinctively wanting to cover himself with his hand.
But just as he raised his hand, Liu Yun’s slender, jade-like fingers had already wrapped around it.
After gently stroking it a couple of times, she said, "What on earth did you eat growing up to have something so ridiculous? It feels... scarier than those foreigners in the movies."
Chenyang said with a playful smile, "So Sister Liu watches dirty movies on the sly, huh?"
"Ah... Of course not."
"If you don’t, then how do you know how big foreigners are?"
"I... I heard it from Feifei and the others."
As she spoke, Liu Yun not only let go but also quickly changed the subject. "By the way, you and Feifei... have you two... you know?"
