Chapter 170
Seeing An Xiaoqing hesitate, Chenyang asked urgently, "But what?"
An Xiaoqing sighed. "While your grandfather saved a lot of powerful people, he also offended a lot of them.
That includes not just titans of the medical world, but ruthless figures from politics and business, too. So I really don’t recommend you try to get by around here using his name."
Liu Yun frowned. "Elder Ye offended powerful figures in both political and business circles?"
"That’s right, but I don’t know who specifically. I just happened to overhear it when Gao Tianqi and I got married, while the elders from our two families were chatting.
Never mind other fields. Just within our own medical community, opinions on Elder Ye are extremely polarized. Some people worship the ground he walks on and would give their entire fortune just to have him take them on as a disciple. Then there are others who despise him and can’t wait for him to kick the bucket."
Hearing this, Chenyang said with resignation, "That shady old bastard... I’ve lived with him for over twenty years, and I always just thought he was some ordinary old man who was greedy, lecherous, and knew a bit of medicine. I never would’ve guessed he had such a colorful past."
Liu Yun said, "Elder Ye probably didn’t tell you as his own way of protecting you. After all, you’re not ready to fly on your own yet. If you only met the people who admire him, you might gain some advantages. But if you ran into the ones who hate him, you’d be in serious danger."
"Sister Liu, you’re giving him way too much credit. Before I came back to Yang City, he told me himself that if I ever got into trouble, I should just drop his name.
If he really wanted to protect me, he should have told me about his past and given me a list of his enemies’ names.
I’m just lucky I met you all first. If I’d run into his enemies instead, I wouldn’t have even known what fucking killed me."
Chenyang was getting pissed off. He didn’t care that he was in an office; he just plopped down on the sofa, pulled out a cigarette, and lit one up.
After taking a few angry puffs, he cursed, "That old bastard. I treated him with the respect due to my own grandpa, but he’s screwing me over like I’m some worthless punk!"
Liu Yun pinched the bridge of her nose. "In our eyes, Elder Ye is like a god. And since he’s a god, his thoughts and motives aren’t something we mere mortals can ever hope to fully understand."
"There’s really no need to overthink it. Whatever Elder Ye is doing, he would never actually harm Chenyang. Besides, Chenyang is out here making a name for himself with his own skills. His grandfather’s reputation is just a potential asset."
"Director An is right. From now on, just keep your head down and do your job. As for his name... don’t bring it up again unless you have absolutely no other choice."
With the cigarette still dangling from his lips, Chenyang grinned. "I never planned on riding that old bastard’s coattails to get by. How much of a legend he is has nothing to do with me. If I’m going to make it big in Yang City, it’ll be because *I’m* a legend."
"Now that’s what I like to hear."
Liu Yun gave a faint smile and turned her head. "Director An, after you get Chenyang’s onboarding paperwork processed, please also help him sort out the issue with his medical license."
"It’s a small matter. You can leave it to me."
"Then I’ll take Chenyang for a tour of the department and get him acquainted with the work environment."
"Alright."
An Xiaoqing nodded, but just as Liu Yun was about to lead Chenyang out, she suddenly spoke up. "Director Liu, could I have another word with Chenyang alone?"
"Of course." Liu Yun paused for a moment before saying to Chenyang, "Come find me in the OB/GYN department on the third floor after you’re done talking with Director An."
"Got it."
After Liu Yun left with the man and woman, Chenyang asked, "Was there something else you wanted to say to me?"
"You’re a sneaky one."
"How am I sneaky?"
"You’re already one of Director Liu’s people, but you still came to the interview pretending to be some clueless rookie. If I hadn’t been quick on the uptake and decided not to give you a hard time, Gao Tianqi wouldn’t have been the only one getting slapped just now."
Chenyang raised an eyebrow. "Sister Liu seems like a really gentle person. How come you all seem so scared of her?"
"You’re the first person I’ve ever heard call Liu Yidao gentle." An Xiaoqing gave a wry smile. "But that’s not right. You call her ’Sister,’ and she’s already treating you like one of her own. You of all people should know her better, so how is it you look like you don’t know the first thing about her?"
"I’ve only known her for a little while."
"You’ve only known her a little while and she’s already treating you like family?" An Xiaoqing frowned. "Even with your grandfather being Elder Ye, that shouldn’t be enough to make her lower herself like this, should it?"
"I also treated an illness for her."
"That’s still not enough."
As she spoke, a peculiar look appeared in An Xiaoqing’s eyes as she sized up Chenyang. She leaned in, pinching his chin. "Fess up. Is there something else going on between you two?!"
