Chapter 95 - 94: Don’t Meddle in a Beauty’s Business
Yvonne Lowell called back, feeling a little guilty. The call connected instantly. "Hello?"
"My gorgeous girl, you were looking for me?"
"Mm, have you not placated Harrison yet?" The man’s voice on the other end sounded a little resentful.
’Sheesh, he sounds like a spurned lover.’
Yvonne Lowell rubbed her nose awkwardly. "Ahem, just about."
"So, does that mean it’s my turn? Will you grace me with your presence for dinner tomorrow night?"
Yvonne Lowell wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but she felt Leo Grant’s voice sounded a little... tense?
’What’s up with him? He gets nervous just talking to me on the phone?’
Before she could think it over, he asked again, "Is that a yes?"
Yvonne Lowell’s mouth moved faster than her brain. "Sure. You pick the time and place, and I’ll meet you there."
"No need!" Seeming to realize he sounded overly excited, Leo Grant cleared his throat.
"I mean, I can just pick you up. Wait for me at home tomorrow at four in the afternoon."
Yvonne Lowell teased, "President Grant, tomorrow isn’t a weekend. Planning to leave work early again?"
"The Grants don’t employ useless people. If the company can’t survive me leaving two hours early, then it might as well go bankrupt." Leo Grant’s voice was calm, yet it carried his unique brand of arrogance.
"Alright, see you tomorrow then."
Yvonne Lowell didn’t argue. Why turn down a free chauffeur?
...
The next afternoon, Yvonne Lowell walked down the stairs at a leisurely pace, her hands stuffed in her jacket pockets.
Harrison Lowell was lying on the sofa playing a game. Hearing footsteps, he glanced up at her. "Where are you going?"
"I have something to do, so I’m heading out. Tell Mom I won’t be back for dinner tonight," Yvonne Lowell said as she walked to the entryway to change her shoes.
Harrison Lowell, who was maneuvering his game character to hide in the bushes, took advantage of the time it took to recall to the fountain to eye her suspiciously.
"First Nina this morning, and now you. One by one, you all go out to have fun, and not a single one of you thinks to bring your dear brother—me!?"
Yvonne Lowell finished changing her shoes and pressed a finger to her lips. "Be good. A pretty lady’s business is none of your concern."
With that, she quickly walked out.
’You can’t keep spoiling a creature like a brother.’
Now that he was back to full health, Yvonne Lowell had no intention of letting him get cocky.
’And that was final, even if Jesus himself came down to argue. Yvonne Lowell had spoken.’
"Hey! Yvonne Lowell! I see you’ve grown bold!" Harrison Lowell stood up, wanting to give chase.
But then, a voice announcement came from his phone: "Our high-ground defensive tower is under attack."
He had no choice but to sit back down.
After all, this was a losing game. Whether they could turn it around all depended on if he could carry the team.
’Heh... Of course, that was a lie.’
The moment Yvonne Lowell walked out of her villa’s gate, she saw Leo Grant’s car parked by the road. He was leaning against the passenger side door, talking on the phone.
Yvonne Lowell glanced down at the time: 3:56 PM.
Hearing her footsteps, Leo Grant looked up and waved. He then said something to the person on the other end and hung up.
Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow and walked over. "How long have you been waiting?"
A smile played on Leo Grant’s lips. "Not at all. I just got here myself."
Yvonne Lowell paused for a moment. ’Just got here? Why does this conversation sound so familiar?’
"What are you thinking about?" Leo Grant opened the passenger door.
"Hop in. We should get going."
Yvonne Lowell didn’t dwell on her earlier suspicion and ducked into the car.
They made small talk, and the conversation flowed easily, neither boring nor awkward.
An hour later, they arrived at their destination.
When Yvonne Lowell got out of the car, she was a bit stunned. Wasn’t this the revolving sky restaurant that had been under construction for the past two years?
’I think they said it was 168 floors high. Is it finished and open for business already?’
"What are you staring at? Let’s go." Leo Grant casually tossed his keys to the valet and guided her inside with an arm around her shoulders.
The manager, who had been waiting in the lobby, hurried over to greet them. "President Grant, Miss Lowell, this way, please."
As they entered the elevator, Yvonne Lowell looked at him suspiciously. "President Grant? I don’t recall hearing this was one of The Grants’ properties."
"It’s not one of The Grants’. It’s my personal asset." Leo Grant raised an eyebrow. "It’s about to open, so I figured I’d have you come over and help me test the menu."
Yvonne Lowell jabbed an elbow into his side and said through clenched teeth, "So you were the punk who snatched this land from me back then. An ’unnamed Hong Kong businessman’? You’ve got some nerve."
Leo Grant froze for a second as he recalled the bidding conference from that year.
He hadn’t attended in person, sending Ian Lynch instead.
Ian Lynch had reported back that they and another foreign firm had the best chances of winning, and in the end, they had just barely scraped by with a victory.
He never would have thought their paths had crossed so long ago.
Leo Grant shook his head and laughed. "Well, talk about a case of us fighting our own. My thanks to that foreign firm for their painful sacrifice."
Yvonne Lowell gave him a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. "Don’t mention it. You deserved it."
’Hah. If I hadn’t failed to get this land, I probably would have never acquired Leno.’
The manager beside them could only silently tune them out, watching the elevator’s floor indicator climb. Why had 168 floors never seemed so high before?
’I want to get rich, I want my wife, I want my kids, I want to go home...’
...
Upon reaching the 168th floor, Yvonne Lowell took in the Italian-style decor and gave it a silent thumbs-up in her mind.
’Classy. Truly classy.’
She walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows and looked at the view outside.
It was late autumn, and the sky at this hour was already starting to darken.
Gazing at the sea of lights from the countless homes in the distance, she was struck by a wave of emotion. Now, at least one of those lights was hers.
She turned back to Leo Grant. "I regret it. I should have kept fighting you for it, even if the price had gone far beyond my budget."
Leo Grant raised an eyebrow. "You like it here?"
"Mm, the view is pretty good."
"Is there any chance the view is good because my design is good?" Leo Grant watched her with a teasing look.
Yvonne Lowell took a deep breath, walked to the table, and sat down. As she passed him, she deliberately stepped on his foot. "I won’t hold it against you. Let’s eat."
Leo Grant looked at the new footprint on his previously shiny leather shoe, but he wasn’t annoyed. He simply sat down across from her.
He clapped his hands, and the dishes he had ordered in advance were brought to the table.
After they had eaten their fill, Leo Grant propped his chin on his hand and looked at her. "How was it? Are you satisfied?"
Yvonne Lowell finished the last bite of her tiramisu and said, her tone a bit strained, "It was alright. Just so-so."
Leo Grant gave her empty plate a teasing look. If she had left even a single bite, he might have believed her.
Perhaps the meaning in his eyes was too obvious, because Yvonne Lowell rolled her eyes at him and gave up all pretense. "It was delicious, okay? Happy now?"
"Of course. I’m glad you liked it."
Yvonne Lowell was about to say something when she heard a loud BANG.
She instinctively turned her head to look out the window and saw beams of light shooting into the sky one after another, instantly blooming into a dazzling spectacle.
