Chapter 72 - 71: Your Family is Also Waiting for You to Come Home
Yvonne Lowell’s head cleared instantly. "Just a moment."
She got up, put on her mask, and draped her jacket over her shoulders before opening the door. "Come in."
Charles Lowell had his arm around Wendy Sutton, and they followed Theodore Zane inside.
When Wendy Sutton saw her, her eyes began to redden again. "Young lady, thank you so much for today. If it weren’t for you, I think I would have..."
Yvonne Lowell froze for a second before subconsciously handing her a tissue. "You’re welcome. It’s our job."
"How can you say it’s just your job! That wound must hurt so much! You’re just a child yourself, your family must treasure you."
Wendy Sutton was overcome with self-blame, her words becoming a bit incoherent. "If we hadn’t gone out without bodyguards, none of this would have happened. We ended up getting you all involved, and now you... I just..."
"It’s all right. This wasn’t your fault. If circumstances permit, just remember to bring bodyguards next time you go out," Yvonne Lowell interrupted her.
Yvonne Lowell was polite in her words and actions, yet she maintained a clear distance, as if the other party were merely a stranger she had rescued.
Charles Lowell gently patted her back to soothe her. "Wendy, why don’t you step outside for a moment and let me talk to her?"
"Then you talk to her properly. Make sure you thank this young lady well," Wendy Sutton urged.
Wendy Sutton hadn’t yet recovered from the shock. She was still lost in the emotions of being held hostage and someone getting hurt because of her.
Her mind was a total mess, leaving her with no extra energy to think about much else.
Let alone connect the girl in front of her with her own precious daughter, who was supposed to be at home filming a variety show.
"When have I ever let you down? Go get some rest now, alright?" Charles Lowell patiently replied.
Yvonne Lowell glanced at Theodore Zane, who understood and led the woman out.
She then looked at Charles Lowell. "I’ve received your thanks. Sir, you should also go get some rest. We’re about to return to our country."
Charles Lowell looked at her, hesitating to speak. "Your injury... it must hurt a lot, right?"
"It’s fine. Just a flesh wound. Nothing serious."
Charles Lowell sat down on a chair without speaking, his gaze complex as he looked at her.
"What is it? Is there something else?" Yvonne Lowell’s fingers curled slightly without her realizing it.
Charles Lowell’s lips moved a few times. "Is... is that you... Nola?"
Beneath her mask, Yvonne Lowell’s expression froze for an instant. Her tone was puzzled. "Nola? Sir, have you mistaken me for someone else?"
"My apologies. I must have the wrong person." Charles Lowell’s expression faltered for a moment before he regained his usual composure.
"I have a daughter, too. She’s only nineteen this year. From the looks of it, you can’t be much older. You must be around my girl’s age, right? Plus, your back and your build... they look a bit like hers."
Yvonne Lowell breathed a small sigh of relief internally. ’There are many people in this world who look alike, let alone just from the back. It’s not strange to be mistaken.’
Charles Lowell gazed at the wall, a glint of something crystalline in his eyes.
"My daughter is our family’s treasure, but she was abducted when she was four. She only came back to us a few months ago."
He seemed to be talking to himself, not expecting a response from Yvonne Lowell, merely treating her as a listener.
"She’s amazing. So young, yet she’s already accomplished so much. If it had been me at nineteen, I couldn’t have possibly done what she has."
"But she never, ever talks about the hardships she must have endured during that time."
"I always feel like... like I don’t really know her that well, because the child never tells us anything. But that doesn’t stop her from being our pride and joy."
"If I could, I’d rather she wasn’t so strong. I’d rather she just stayed at home, being a carefree little princess."
Yvonne Lowell lowered her eyes. "Everyone has their own choices. Your daughter probably feels happy, doesn’t she? After all, your whole family loves her so much."
"Yes. We’ll always love her. We just want her to live a life that’s carefree, safe, and healthy."
Charles Lowell wiped a tear from the corner of his eye and stood up. "Look at me, I’ve lost my composure. I’ll head out now. You take care of yourself and rest up."
"Okay. Take care," Yvonne Lowell nodded slightly.
As Charles Lowell placed his hand on the doorknob, he paused without turning back.
"Comrade, I know your job is dangerous and your identity must be kept secret. But I hope you can be more careful, and sometimes... be a little more selfish. After all, your family is waiting for you to come home, too. You must be their pride and joy as well."
Without waiting for her reply, he opened the door and left.
Yvonne Lowell stared at the closed door, lost in a daze for a long time.
It was unclear how much time had passed before she murmured softly, "I know, Dad..."
...
The Anomalous Abilities Unit returned to Kingsland by evening.
Yvonne Lowell returned the jacket to Stanley Sutton and said goodbye to the others. "I’m heading out."
"Where to? Want me to give you a ride? It won’t be easy for you to drive like this," Stanley Sutton asked as he took the jacket.
"No need. Who are you looking down on? Forgot the first lesson your instructor taught you? Never judge a book by its cover!"
With that, Yvonne Lowell headed for her car.
Theodore Zane shouted after her, "Senior, will we see you again?!"
A teasing smile played on Yvonne Lowell’s lips. She waved over her shoulder. "Soon."
The group was completely baffled. It wasn’t until Yvonne Lowell drove away that they snapped out of it and began to chatter amongst themselves.
"Soon? What’s that supposed to mean?"
"Don’t tell me we have another mission already?"
"Are you dense? Of course not. You think our Senior can predict the future or something?"
"But man, going on a mission with Senior is a real thrill! So effortless! That move was so damn cool!"
"That was my first time seeing a Spiritual Ability User! Holy crap! I’m blown away for the next hundred years!!"
"Yeah, and the vice-captain was complaining about her at first."
"Screw you! I was young and foolish! Besides, didn’t I get my ass kicked for it?!"
"You better put a mattress protector on your bed tonight, you hear? You were playing with fire today, might wet the bed, HAHAHAHAHA."
"I’m sleeping in your room tonight. If anyone’s pissing the bed, it’s gonna be your bed."
...
Yvonne Lowell’s clothes were still stained with blood, so she couldn’t go home.
Besides, with her second brother being the little rascal he was, always jumping around, he’d probably bump into her and tear open her wound, blowing her cover. ’Better wait a few days,’ she thought.
Yvonne Lowell yanked off her mask and drove toward Tidalview.
She parked outside the gate of her villa, only then remembering this car had never been registered at Tidalview. She would have to get out and enter the password.
She cursed silently. Just as she was about to get out of the car to open the gate, someone knocked on her window.
