Chapter 599 - 593: Limit Condition
Within forty-eight hours of the safer-method release, seven new low-level stable fields came online across mixed and velocity-edge districts. None of them carried any authorization from the original Velocity-19 cluster.
Most were small—four or five people holding a patch of ground, damping residual pressure just enough to keep the Weave from folding back in. Two were already larger than the crew chief preferred. She watched the feeds in silence while the numbers climbed.
One of the new groups had set up near a secondary supply corridor. They began turning people away. The test they used was short and practical: walk the edge of their field under residual load for a fixed interval, hold the damping without spiking the pressure, and answer three questions about the last collapse they had seen.
Fail any part and you were sent back down the line. They posted the criteria on the open feeds without asking anyone.
The post spread. Other new groups copied it, or changed the interval, or added a fourth question about component handling. Within a day the test had versions in three different districts.
The original crew chief watched all of it. She saw the method she had released being used to build new gates she had never designed. She did not shut the groups down.
She also did not endorse them. Torval carried a short message from her to Clara: the limits they had agreed on were already being tested by people who had never been part of the agreement.
Public reaction split cleanly. Some hailed the new groups as proof the method belonged to everyone who could keep a field stable. Others said the groups were just rebuilding the old caste walls under a different name—practical tests instead of rank, residual readings instead of bloodlines.
Flick’s timestamp layer recorded every new field activation, every volunteer accepted or rejected, and every argument that followed. The layer carried no commentary. It only kept the record.
Garran walked two of the newer nodes in person. He logged residual-pressure readings at the edge and at the center. The damping held.
The fields stayed inside the safe band. He also noted that local decisions about who could join and when to expand no longer matched any central schedule. His report upward stayed factual and short. He requested no new orders.
Midway through the second day a shipment of sensor-grade components originally allocated for the official assessment halls was quietly redirected by one of the larger new groups.
The components went to field maintenance instead. The diversion was small—three crates—but it showed on the logistics net. No one from central issued an immediate counter-order. The absence was noticed.
That night, at one of the newer nodes, a line of people waited for the group’s practical test. The original crew chief stood at a distance with Torval, watching. She did not intervene. The public cameras recorded both the line and her presence.
Clara called a second meeting. This time the room held the original crew chief, Torval, Jiro, and two representatives from the larger new groups. Garran was present in the room. Flick was linked on a channel that would not dissolve; the conversation would have a permanent record.
The new-group representatives did not waste time. They had used the safer method. They had produced stable fields. They saw no reason the original cluster’s limits should bind them. They confirmed the redirected sensor components.
Official resupply for field maintenance did not exist. They would continue the diversions unless a better channel was created.
The crew chief restated the condition she had given Clara. Stable nodes set their own pace and membership. She had not agreed to become the new central authority for every group that lit a field.
She also would not accept public blame when uncontrolled expansion produced the next collapse.
Clara had the documentation and the expanded exceptions in front of her. She could formalize a wider framework that gave the new groups limited recognized autonomy, or she could revoke the private exceptions and try to pull the method back under central scheduling. Both options carried visible costs.
The first risked further fragmentation. The second risked open defiance and more unlogged diversions.
Jiro spoke to the residual-pressure data. The newer fields were stable, but the readings were not as clean as the original cluster’s. The damping worked. The margin for error was thinner. A single sustained spike could push a node outside the safe band before the operators corrected.
Torval added that message traffic between nodes was already bypassing him in places. Direct channels had formed. Coordination no longer ran through the old routes. Garran stated the logistics problem in one sentence:
if unofficial diversions continued, the official assessment system would start failing in measurable ways within weeks. Sensor coverage would drop first. Then calibration accuracy. Then the ability to certify any field as safe.
The negotiation stayed concrete. They did not reach full consensus. They reached a public clarification instead.
Clara authorized a short open statement and released it through Flick’s layer. The safer method remained public. Any group running a stable field was responsible for its own residual-pressure discipline and for any damage it caused.
Unlogged resource movement would be treated as a logistics exception only when residual damping was independently verified and maintained. No central quota was imposed. No central protection was promised.
The statement went out. Within hours the newer groups adjusted. Some tightened their own practical tests.
One group that had been pushing expansion too fast voluntarily scaled back after the responsibility language landed. The redirected shipment was partially regularized through a new exception logged by Clara.
The three crates stayed with the field that needed them, but the movement was now on the record and tied to verified damping data.
Garran updated his observation log with the public statement and the partial regularization. The same package reached Atlas under medical restriction.
Atlas did not override. The original crew chief walked the edge of her own node that night and did not send further messages.
The newer nodes kept running. The public cameras kept recording every activation, every acceptance, every rejection, and every argument that followed.
The method was no longer contained inside the original cluster’s boundaries. The people holding the fields were already setting the next limits themselves.
