Chapter 134: Illegal
The next afternoon...
The final bell rang throughout the school.
Almost immediately, the quiet hallways erupted with noise.
Classroom doors opened.
Students poured outside in groups, discussing homework, weekend plans,
games, and whatever rumors had spread during lunch.
Yun Wanhe remained seated for several seconds.
He stared blankly at the blackboard.
His teacher had already left.
Most of his classmates had packed their belongings and disappeared into the hallway.
Yet he remained there.
His thoughts were elsewhere.
More specifically...
On the fact that he no longer had a job.
After the cultivation tournament, he had skipped both school and work.
When he finally returned to work...
The secretary had been waiting for him with a clipboard and the same cold expression she always wore.
She had calmly informed him that disappearing during a shift without permission was a violation of company policy.
Yun Wanhe had attempted to explain that something important had occurred.
The secretary had asked whether the important matter involved a medical emergency.
He had said no.
She had asked whether someone in his family had been in danger.
Again, he had said no.
She had then handed him a list of disciplinary tasks long enough to cover both sides of the page.
That had been the final insult.
Yun Wanhe had stared at the list.
Then at the mop beside him.
Then at the executive restroom sign hanging on the wall.
And finally...
He had resigned.
The secretary had accepted his resignation without even attempting to stop him.
In fact...
Yun Wanhe was almost certain he had seen the faintest hint of relief in her eyes.
Now...
He was unemployed again.
He leaned back in his chair and quietly exhaled.
’It doesn’t matter. That job was beneath me.’
He stood and placed his bag over one shoulder.
’Once all my cultivation recovers... Money will become meaningless.’
His footsteps slowed as another thought entered his mind.
’Still... My parents need money now.’
The rent remained unpaid.
The apartment still needed repairs.
His mother had attempted to hide several overdue notices before breakfast that morning.
His father had pretended not to notice.
Yun Wanhe had noticed both of them.
His expression darkened slightly.
’I’ll find another opportunity. Something more appropriate for someone like me.’
He stepped into the hallway.
Students moved around him in every direction.
Several recognized him from the rumors spreading through school.
Some had heard he worked as a janitor.
Others had heard he had quit after only a few days.
A pair of boys whispered nearby.
"That’s him."
"The janitor?"
"Former janitor."
Yun Wanhe’s eye twitched.
He continued walking.
’Ignore them. Mortals laugh at what they don’t understand.’
He reached the stairwell.
Then...
A familiar voice drifted from the hallway behind him.
"You’re seriously still thinking about not coming?"
Yun Wanhe stopped.
The voice belonged to one of the school’s most recognizable girls.
She was difficult to miss.
Her uniform had been altered to fit more tightly than school regulations allowed.
Her long hair had been dyed a light brown.
Her face was covered in heavy makeup, with thick eyeliner, bright lipstick, and glittering decorations around her eyes.
Most students simply referred to her as the Heavy Makeup Girl behind her back.
(AN: All you readers know her)
She didn’t seem to mind.
In fact...
She seemed to enjoy the attention.
Yun Wanhe turned slightly.
The popular girl group had gathered near the windows at the far end of the hallway.
Five girls stood together.
Chi Lingxi was among them.
Yun Wanhe’s attention immediately settled on her.
She held her schoolbag in front of her with both hands.
Her expression was hesitant.
"I already told you..."
Chi Lingxi spoke quietly.
"I don’t think it’s a good idea."
Heavy Makeup Girl rolled her eyes.
"You’ve said that three times."
"Because it isn’t legal."
"That’s what makes it exciting."
Another girl laughed.
"She’s right."
"It’s not like we’re robbing a bank."
Chi Lingxi frowned.
"Illegal street racing is still dangerous."
"We’re not the ones racing."
Heavy Makeup Girl crossed her arms.
"We’re just going to watch."
"Besides..."
A smug smile appeared on her face.
"My boyfriend will be there."
One of the other girls immediately leaned closer.
"He’s really competing?"
"Of course."
Heavy Makeup Girl took out her phone.
She turned the screen toward them.
A photograph showed a young man leaning against a bright red sports car.
He wore a leather jacket, dark sunglasses, and the expression of someone who had spent a long time practicing how to look impressive.
"My new boyfriend has been racing for almost two years."
Heavy Makeup Girl proudly lifted her chin.
"He’s already one of the best drivers in the eastern district."
One girl stared at the picture.
"That car is his?"
"Obviously."
It wasn’t.
The car belonged to his older cousin.
But Heavy Makeup Girl didn’t mention that.
Another girl looked impressed.
"I heard tonight’s race is huge."
"It is."
Heavy Makeup Girl lowered her voice, making the others instinctively lean closer.
"People from several districts are entering."
"Rich heirs. Underground racers. Professional drivers who aren’t supposed to participate. Maybe even a few people connected to the top families."
One of the girls gasped.
"Seriously?"
Heavy Makeup Girl nodded.
"My boyfriend said the organizers rented out an entire abandoned highway. They’ve blocked the entrances. They even have people watching for police."
Chi Lingxi looked increasingly uncomfortable.
"That doesn’t make it sound safer."
"It’ll be fine."
Heavy Makeup Girl reached out and took Chi Lingxi’s arm.
"We’ll stay together."
Another girl nodded.
"We don’t have to stand close to the road. And if anything feels wrong, we’ll leave."
Chi Lingxi remained silent.
Heavy Makeup Girl smiled.
"Come on, Lingxi."
"Everyone at school thinks you never do anything fun."
Chi Lingxi looked at her.
"Who says that?"
The girls exchanged glances.
No one answered.
Chi Lingxi sighed.
Heavy Makeup Girl quickly continued.
"You spend almost every evening helping at your family’s sidewalk restaurant. You deserve one night out. We’ll take pictures. We’ll listen to music. We’ll watch the race!"
