Chapter 89: The Last Prisoner
The Crimson Highlands erupted.
The entire underground chamber shook violently.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
Kael lost his footing.
He slammed one hand against the stone platform to keep himself from falling into the abyss below.
Cracks spread across the ancient floor.
Dust poured from the ceiling.
The enormous eye beneath the platform remained open.
Watching him.
Waiting.
Kael’s sword trembled slightly in his hand.
Not from fear.
From the pressure filling the chamber.
Whatever was beneath him possessed a presence unlike anything he’d encountered before.
Even the demon from the mine had not felt this powerful.
Kael steadied himself.
"You said you’re the last prisoner."
The enormous eye slowly moved.
"Yes."
"Who imprisoned you?"
Silence.
Then the creature answered.
"Those who feared what I knew."
Kael frowned.
"Humans?"
The creature gave no immediate answer.
Instead...
The chains around the chamber rattled.
Several were embedded directly into its enormous body.
Kael finally understood.
The creature wasn’t guarding the chamber.
It was trapped inside it.
"You’ve been here this entire time?"
"Longer than your empire has existed."
Kael’s expression changed.
The Empire was thousands of years old.
If this creature truly remembered a time before it...
Then whatever happened beneath the Crimson Highlands belonged to a forgotten age.
The creature’s voice echoed through the cavern.
"Your people call this land the Crimson Highlands."
"Before that..."
"It had another name."
Kael listened.
"The Battlefield of Ash."
Images suddenly appeared across the walls.
Not magic.
Memories.
Ancient memories.
Kael watched armies collide.
Humans.
Monsters.
Creatures unlike anything recorded in modern history.
And above them...
Dragons.
Not the smaller dragons Kael had heard about in stories.
These creatures were enormous.
Their wings covered the sky.
Their flames turned mountains into rivers of fire.
Kael stared.
"What happened?"
"The demons came."
The images changed.
Black armies descended from the sky.
The dragons fought.
Humans fought.
Monsters fought.
For generations...
The war continued.
Then Kael saw something unexpected.
The dragons weren’t winning.
They were dying.
One after another...
They fell from the sky.
Their bodies became mountains.
Their bones became ruins.
Their blood stained the land.
The Last True Dragons
Kael stepped closer to the ancient images.
"There were so many..."
"Once."
The prisoner answered.
"They were the guardians of this world."
"What happened to them?"
"They sacrificed themselves."
"For what?"
The creature’s enormous eye narrowed.
"To seal the Demon Sovereign."
Kael went silent.
The image changed again.
A group of enormous dragons surrounded a massive black sphere.
Their bodies burned with golden flames.
One by one...
They disappeared into the light.
The final dragon remained.
It looked toward something hidden beyond the carving.
Then...
The image ended.
Kael stared at the wall.
"That’s how they disappeared."
"Yes."
"And the other dragons?"
"Not True Dragons."
Kael frowned.
"What?"
"Your modern dragons."
The creature’s voice became quieter.
"They are descendants."
"Creatures born from fragments of what once existed."
"Powerful."
"Ancient."
"But not the same."
Kael slowly understood.
The True Dragons weren’t simply rare.
They were gone.
Extinct.
Except...
His mind immediately went to the mysterious egg.
He said nothing.
The Seal
The prisoner continued.
"The final True Dragons sacrificed themselves to create the seal."
Kael looked toward the enormous chains.
"And you?"
"I helped them."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"You’re not a demon."
"No."
"Then why were you imprisoned?"
The creature’s eye closed.
"Because after the war..."
"Humans became afraid."
"They believed anything that survived the war could become a threat."
Kael looked at the chains.
"So they locked you here."
"Yes."
"Alone."
"Yes."
"For thousands of years."
The creature didn’t answer.
It didn’t need to.
The Seal Is Breaking
Another tremor shook the chamber.
One of the ancient chains snapped.
CLANG!
Kael immediately turned.
The prisoner looked toward the darkness below.
"The seal is failing."
"How long?"
"Not long."
"Days?"
"Perhaps."
"Months?"
"Perhaps."
Kael’s expression hardened.
"You don’t know?"
"I have been trapped in darkness for centuries."
"I no longer measure time as you do."
Another chain cracked.
CRACK!
Kael looked toward the pit.
"What happens if it breaks?"
The creature’s voice became almost a whisper.
"The Demon Sovereign wakes."
The System
The system suddenly appeared.
For several seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then—
WORLD EVENT DETECTED Ancient Seal Failure
Threat Classification:
Unknown
Possible Consequence:
Global Catastrophe
Recommended Action:
Investigate
Kael stared at the notification.
"Global..."
He looked toward the prisoner.
"Can it be stopped?"
"Perhaps."
"How?"
The creature looked directly at him.
"The dragons left something behind."
Kael’s heart skipped.
"What?"
"Their final inheritance."
"Where?"
The creature looked toward the surface.
"Hidden beneath the mountain."
The Choice
Kael’s mind raced.
He had come here expecting to investigate monster attacks.
Now he had discovered something that could threaten the entire continent.
But he couldn’t simply rush toward the inheritance.
He had fifty soldiers outside.
Hundreds of Imperial soldiers.
Villagers.
Prisoners.
And thousands of people across the Crimson Highlands.
He needed to get them out.
First.
Then...
He needed to tell the emperor.
Kael turned toward the exit.
The prisoner spoke.
"Human."
Kael stopped.
"You will return."
It wasn’t a question.
Kael looked back.
"If there’s a way to stop this..."
"I’ll find it."
The creature’s enormous eye narrowed.
"You speak differently from the others."
Kael gave a small nod.
"I’ve heard that before."
Then he turned away.
The Collapse
The mountain shook again.
This time...
The entire platform cracked.
Kael ran.
Behind him...
One chain after another snapped.
CLANG!
CLANG!
CLANG!
The prisoner roared.
The sound shook the chamber.
Kael activated Night Aura.
Dark energy wrapped around his legs.
He accelerated through the ancient halls.
Darius looked toward the mountain.
The entire Black Dragon Company had evacuated the mine.
Prisoners were being treated.
Imperial soldiers stood ready.
Then—
The ground beneath them moved.
A massive crack tore through the valley.
Walter nearly fell.
"What the hell?!"
Leon shouted.
"Everyone away from the mountain!"
Grom stared toward the peak.
Something was happening.
The mountain itself was splitting.
Kael suddenly burst from the mine entrance.
BOOM!
He landed hard.
Darius immediately rushed toward him.
"Commander!"
Kael looked around.
"Everyone out?"
"Yes."
"The prisoners?"
"Safe."
"Good."
Kael looked toward the mountain.
Then toward the Imperial officers.
"We have a problem."
Darius followed his gaze.
"What kind?"
Kael’s expression became grim.
"The monster attacks weren’t the real problem."
"The creatures were running from something."
Walter swallowed.
"What’s worse than that?"
Kael looked toward the cracking mountain.
"A war that ended thousands of years ago..."
"...might not actually be over."
A deafening roar erupted beneath the earth.
ROOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAR!
Every soldier froze.
Far beneath them...
Something had heard them.
And somewhere within the ancient mountain...
The first piece of the seal finally broke.
