Chapter 224: The Final Answer
The Coliseum felt different on the morning of the Swordsman Division final.
Not louder.
Sharper.
By the time Kael entered with Darius, Damien, Elias, and the others, most of the seats were already full. Nobles occupied the upper galleries beneath House banners. Imperial officers filled the reserved military sections. Accepted knights and candidates crowded the lower rows, many of them still carrying bruises from their own matches.
The arena itself remained empty.
That only made everyone watch it harder.
Victor had not arrived yet.
Neither had Sir Edric Vale.
Damien dropped into the seat beside Elias and stretched his legs.
"Finals are better when you already won yours."
Elias looked at him.
"You have mentioned that every day since the spear final."
"Because it remains true."
"You won two days ago."
"History remembers champions."
Brennar sat on Damien’s other side.
"History may remember you less kindly if you continue speaking."
Damien considered that.
"Still champion."
Kael smiled despite himself.
Darius did not.
He was watching the arena.
Kael noticed.
"You’re tense."
"No."
"You look tense."
"I am observing."
"Victor says the same thing."
Darius finally glanced toward him.
"That should concern you."
Kael laughed quietly.
Then the first horn sounded.
The Coliseum changed at once.
Conversation thinned.
Heads turned toward the eastern tunnel.
Sir Edric Vale entered.
No flourish.
No House entourage.
No dramatic gesture toward the crowd.
He wore the same restrained armor he had used throughout the tournament, repaired where necessary but otherwise unchanged. His sword hung at his side.
House Varrow’s colors appeared in one section of the stands, but Edric did not look toward them.
He walked to the center.
Stopped.
Waited.
Kael leaned forward.
Edric had eliminated Elias Thorn.
Then survived Joren Pellaris.
Both fights had been difficult for different reasons.
Against Elias, Edric had endured adaptation after adaptation until Elias had, in Darius’s words, run out of decisions.
Against Joren, Edric had done something different.
He had allowed chaos to exist without trying to answer every part of it.
That was what concerned Kael most.
Victor could not simply overwhelm him with options.
Edric had already shown that he knew how to discard irrelevant problems.
The second horn sounded.
Victor entered.
The reaction was immediate.
The Imperial sections rose first.
Then the sound spread through the Coliseum.
Victor did not wave this time.
He did not smile.
He walked with his sword already in hand, expression fixed on Edric.
Kael felt Darius shift beside him.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"That was something."
Darius watched Victor take his mark.
"He is quieter."
Kael nodded.
That mattered.
Victor usually carried energy into a room before he entered it.
Today, he seemed to be holding all of it inside.
The referee stepped between them.
Final rules were repeated.
Standard scoring.
First to five points, unless regulation ended earlier.
Clean controlled strikes.
Boundary violations enforced.
Excessive force penalized.
Both men acknowledged.
Victor raised his sword.
Edric did the same.
The referee stepped away.
The signal sounded.
Neither man moved.
The crowd waited.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Victor’s front foot shifted.
Edric’s blade moved slightly.
Nothing else.
Damien leaned forward.
"This is already strange."
Elias nodded.
"Victor usually attacks by now."
Kael said nothing.
He knew why.
Victor had spent the previous night hearing one warning repeatedly.
Do not fight the reputation.
Do not fight the bracket.
Do not fight what Edric did to Elias or Joren.
Fight the man in front of you.
Victor stepped.
Edric adjusted.
Victor stepped again.
Still no attack.
Kael almost smiled.
Patience looked unnatural on his brother.
But it was there.
Then Victor accelerated.
One fast cut toward Edric’s shoulder.
Edric parried.
Victor disengaged.
And stopped.
No second attack.
Edric reset.
No score.
Darius gave the smallest nod.
Kael saw it.
Victor tested again.
This time a low threat.
Edric moved his guard.
Victor did not follow.
Another reset.
The crowd murmured.
They wanted the Victor who attacked in storms.
Victor refused them.
Edric finally advanced.
One step.
Then another.
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
That was new.
Edric was usually content to let opponents spend initiative.
Victor had given him almost nothing to answer.
So Edric had to create the first real question himself.
He attacked.
Simple.
Direct.
Victor parried.
Edric recovered.
Victor did not counter.
The Coliseum groaned.
Damien whispered, "Darius broke him."
Victor’s head turned slightly as though he somehow heard.
Kael nearly laughed.
Darius remained expressionless.
Then Edric attacked again.
Victor turned the blade aside.
Again, no counter.
Edric’s third approach came shorter.
More testing than attack.
Victor shifted.
Edric suddenly changed line and touched Victor’s forearm.
The referee’s hand rose.
"Point. Sir Edric Vale."
One to zero.
The crowd erupted.
Victor stepped back.
Kael watched his face.
No irritation.
That was important.
Edric returned to his mark.
Victor rolled his sword once in his hand.
The next exchange began.
This time Victor attacked immediately.
Fast.
High.
Edric parried.
Victor changed angle.
Edric followed.
Victor disengaged.
Edric expected another attack.
It did not come.
Victor stepped away instead.
Edric’s guard remained committed high for half a second too long.
Victor reentered.
Clean touch to the ribs.
"Point. Prince Victor."
One to one.
Kael smiled.
Elias exhaled.
"He delayed the continuation."
Darius nodded.
"Edric was waiting for the old Victor."
Victor had just used his own reputation against him.
That was promising.
It was also only one point.
The third exchange lasted nearly a minute.
Victor changed tempo repeatedly.
Fast step.
Slow step.
Pause.
Half-entry.
Retreat.
Edric refused to chase.
Victor threatened the wrist.
Edric moved only enough to cover it.
Victor changed to the shoulder.
Edric turned.
Victor stepped outside.
Edric gave ground.
No score.
Victor reset.
Edric reset.
Then Victor did something Kael did not expect.
He smiled.
Edric noticed.
Victor attacked.
Edric parried.
Victor continued.
Edric caught the second cut.
Victor rotated.
Edric shifted his weight.
Victor suddenly stopped the sequence and stepped backward.
Edric did not follow.
Victor smiled wider.
Kael frowned.
"What is he doing?"
Elias answered before Darius.
"Counting."
Kael looked toward him.
Elias continued.
"Edric decides which attacks matter. Victor is trying to learn when he decides."
That made sense.
Victor was not simply testing Edric’s defense.
He was testing Edric’s selection.
Which movements earned a response?
Which did Edric ignore?
Which caused him to commit?
The next attack answered part of it.
Victor showed a large shoulder cut.
Edric barely moved.
Victor shifted low.
Still little reaction.
Victor stepped toward Edric’s weapon hand.
Edric’s blade moved immediately.
Victor saw it.
He disengaged around the response.
Touch.
"Point. Prince Victor."
Two to one.
The Imperial sections roared.
Victor stepped away.
Edric looked at him differently now.
Not worried.
Interested.
That was dangerous.
Darius said quietly, "He knows."
Kael nodded.
Edric had recognized the test.
Victor would not get the same answer again.
Edric adjusted.
The change was so small most of the Coliseum probably missed it.
He moved his sword slightly farther from center.
Victor noticed immediately.
His next hand attack found no obvious line.
He changed toward the body.
Edric waited.
Victor attacked.
Edric parried late.
Victor tried to exploit the delay.
That was the trap.
Edric’s blade turned through the contact and struck Victor’s upper arm during the continuation.
"Point. Sir Edric Vale."
Two to two.
Victor stepped away and nodded once.
Not to Edric.
To himself.
Kael knew the expression.
Victor had understood what happened.
The question was whether he would correct it or become angry that Edric had changed first.
The next exchange answered that.
Victor slowed down again.
No immediate retaliation.
Good.
Damien whispered, "I don’t like responsible Victor."
Elias looked toward him.
"Why?"
"He makes me feel like I should improve."
"Terrible."
The match became quieter after that.
Not less intense.
More precise.
Victor attacked less frequently.
Edric defended less visibly.
Both men were waiting for the other to expose what they valued most.
Then Edric did something Kael had not seen from him before.
He deliberately gave ground.
Victor advanced.
Edric retreated again.
Victor followed.
One step.
Two.
Three.
Kael felt Darius shift.
"Trap."
Victor apparently knew too.
He stopped.
Edric had expected one more step.
The distance changed.
Victor attacked from farther away than normal.
Edric adjusted late.
Victor’s blade touched Edric’s shoulder.
The referee started to raise his hand.
Then stopped.
The judges conferred.
Boundary?
Control?
Angle?
The Coliseum descended into noise.
Victor waited.
Edric remained still.
Finally the referee turned.
"Point confirmed. Prince Victor."
Three to two.
Victor had the lead.
For the first time in the match, Edric looked mildly irritated.
Not much.
Enough.
Kael saw it.
So did Victor.
That might be more valuable than the point.
Victor had forced Edric into expecting an answer that never came.
He had made the patient man impatient for half a step.
Darius spoke quietly.
"Now comes the dangerous part."
Kael knew why.
Victor had proof his approach worked.
That could make him trust it too much.
The signal sounded.
Victor attacked instantly.
Kael cursed under his breath.
Darius said nothing.
The first cut was fast.
Edric parried.
Victor continued.
Second attack.
Caught.
Third.
Edric retreated.
Victor pressed.
There it was.
The old rhythm.
Speed feeding speed.
Confidence feeding aggression.
Edric yielded another step.
Victor followed.
Then Edric stopped retreating.
His blade came forward.
Victor was mid-step.
Clean touch to the chest.
"Point. Sir Edric Vale."
Three to three.
Victor exhaled sharply.
Kael leaned back.
Darius finally said, "There."
Victor had fallen into it exactly once.
One point was the price.
Hopefully enough.
The next exchange began with Victor refusing to move.
Edric stepped first.
Victor smiled faintly.
Kael did too.
Lesson retained.
Edric attacked.
Victor parried.
Edric tried to continue.
Victor interrupted.
The blades crossed.
Edric pushed.
Victor released.
Edric nearly overextended.
Victor stepped around.
Edric recovered.
No point.
The crowd applauded.
Victor had not scored.
But he had forced Edric to make a longer recovery than usual.
Elias leaned forward.
"That is what he meant."
Kael looked toward him.
"What?"
"Making one answer expensive."
Victor had said it yesterday.
He did not need to create endless questions.
He needed to make Edric pay for answering the important one.
The next exchange began similarly.
Victor threatened the hand.
Edric covered.
Victor did not attack around it.
He attacked the same line again.
Edric covered harder.
Third time.
Same threat.
Edric’s guard settled earlier.
Victor stepped inside the prepared defense.
Not around it.
Through the space it created.
His sword touched Edric’s torso.
"Point. Prince Victor."
Four to three.
The crowd exploded.
Victor was one point from the championship.
Damien stood.
Brennar grabbed his coat and pulled him back down.
"You cannot see better standing."
"I feel better."
"Sit."
Kael barely heard them.
He was watching Edric.
Four to three.
Against most opponents, that meant pressure.
Against Edric, it seemed to make him calmer.
He returned to his mark.
Adjusted his grip.
Breathed once.
The signal sounded.
Edric attacked first.
Fast.
Victor had expected patience.
That surprise nearly cost him.
He barely caught the strike.
Edric continued.
Victor retreated.
Edric pressed again.
Victor parried.
Another attack.
Victor reached the boundary.
The entire Coliseum rose.
Kael’s fingers tightened against the stone railing.
Victor tried to pivot.
Edric followed.
Victor changed direction.
Edric stayed with him.
Then Victor saw an opening.
Kael saw it too.
A narrow line toward Edric’s shoulder.
Victor attacked.
Edric had offered it.
His blade intercepted Victor’s arm before Victor’s strike landed cleanly.
"Point. Sir Edric Vale."
Four to four.
The arena erupted.
Final point.
One exchange away.
Victor stepped toward his corner.
For the first time, he looked tired.
Not physically broken.
Mentally taxed.
Edric had made him spend attention every second.
Kael wondered whether Victor still had enough patience left.
Darius remained silent.
Victor glanced toward the Blackwood section.
Not at Kael.
At Darius.
The Shield did not gesture.
Did not mouth advice.
He only looked back.
Victor nodded.
Then returned to center.
The referee called both men forward.
"Final point."
The Coliseum quieted in layers.
Victor raised his sword.
Edric raised his.
The signal sounded.
Nothing happened.
Ten seconds.
Fifteen.
Twenty.
The crowd began murmuring.
Victor stepped.
Edric adjusted.
Victor stepped again.
Edric did not move.
Victor threatened the weapon hand.
No reaction.
He threatened high.
No reaction.
Edric had changed again.
He was refusing to reveal what mattered.
Victor circled.
Edric followed.
The first real attack came from Edric.
Victor parried.
No continuation.
Edric reset.
Victor attacked.
Edric turned it aside.
Victor did not continue.
Reset.
Kael could barely breathe.
Neither man was giving the other enough information.
Another exchange.
Edric high.
Victor low.
Blades met.
Separated.
No score.
The final had become a test of nerve.
Then Victor changed.
He attacked with speed.
One cut.
Edric parried.
Second.
Edric caught it.
Third.
Edric gave ground.
Kael’s stomach tightened.
Too much.
Victor was doing it again.
Edric retreated.
Victor followed.
One step.
Two.
Three.
The trap was obvious now.
Too obvious.
Victor attacked toward the shoulder.
Edric turned his blade into the interception.
Exactly as before.
Then Victor released his sword hand.
The entire arena seemed to freeze.
Not the sword.
One hand.
Victor let the bind carry his blade farther than expected while his body shifted inside the line.
Edric’s counter came toward the space Victor’s arm had occupied.
Victor was no longer there.
His off hand had already reestablished control on the hilt.
He rotated.
Not fast.
Not wild.
Clean.
The edge of his practice blade touched Edric’s side.
Edric’s sword stopped inches from Victor’s shoulder.
Silence.
The referee stared.
The judges conferred.
Victor remained frozen in position.
Edric slowly lowered his blade.
Kael stood without realizing it.
The referee turned.
Raised his hand.
"Point. Prince Victor Aurelius Asterion."
The bell rang.
Five to four.
For one heartbeat, Victor did not react.
Then the Coliseum detonated.
The Imperial sections rose.
Blackwood’s group erupted.
Damien shouted something incomprehensible.
Elias grabbed Brennar by the shoulders.
Kael laughed.
Actually laughed.
Victor lowered his sword.
He looked toward Edric.
No celebration yet.
Edric stared at the place where Victor’s blade had touched him.
Then he smiled.
Small.
Tired.
Genuine.
He bowed.
"Your Highness."
Victor returned the bow.
"Sir Edric."
Only then did the noise truly reach him.
Victor looked toward the crowd.
Toward the Imperial box.
Toward Kael.
And finally toward Darius.
The Shield gave one slow nod.
Victor smiled.
He had done it.
Prince Victor Aurelius Asterion was the Imperial Swordsman Division champion.
The award ceremony was simpler than the crowd probably wanted.
Victor received the division crest and championship acknowledgment before the assembled officials.
No grand title.
No sudden promotion.
Winning the tournament and advancing within Imperial knighthood remained separate matters.
That distinction had been repeated throughout the examination.
Victor had won the bracket.
That did not automatically make him a High Knight.
It did, however, make every noble recruiter in the Coliseum remember his name for reasons beyond the fact that he was an Imperial prince.
Afterward, Kael found him in the preparation corridor.
Victor was sitting on a bench while a healer wrapped his forearm.
Damien stood nearby.
"Champion to champion," Damien said, "I recommend ignoring Darius tomorrow morning."
Victor looked at him.
"Did that work for you?"
"No."
"Then why recommend it?"
"Solidarity."
Kael leaned against the wall.
"You finally won something without trying to outrun it."
Victor looked up.
"Is that your version of congratulations?"
"Yes."
"It needs work."
Kael smiled.
"You were good."
Victor’s expression changed.
The joke faded.
"Thanks."
Darius entered.
Both champions immediately looked less comfortable.
Damien muttered, "Here it comes."
Darius looked at Victor.
"You won."
"Yes."
"Your fourth exchange after taking the four-to-three lead was poor."
Victor closed his eyes.
Damien pointed.
"See?"
Darius continued. "You accelerated because success made you impatient."
Victor nodded.
"I know."
"The final point was better."
Victor opened his eyes.
"How much better?"
Darius considered.
"Enough."
Victor stared.
Kael laughed.
Damien looked offended on Victor’s behalf.
"That’s all he gets?"
Darius turned toward Damien.
"Your grip transition still needs work."
Damien went quiet.
Elias laughed from the doorway.
Darius looked toward him next.
Elias stopped laughing.
Kael smiled.
Order restored.
Later that evening, the Blackwood group ate together again.
Two champions now sat at the table.
Damien insisted that this required a larger meal.
Edwin, communicating through a short note sent ahead for the upcoming return to Blackwood, apparently disagreed despite not being present.
Victor held the Swordsman Division crest in one hand.
Damien had placed his own Spear Division award beside it.
Brennar looked at both.
"Do you plan to keep displaying those during meals?"
"Yes," Damien said.
Victor answered at the same time.
"No."
Damien looked betrayed.
Kael sat across from them.
For the first time since arriving in Aurelia for the examination, the main tournament pressure had broken.
The Swordsman and Spear divisions had champions.
Several Blackwood candidates had passed the Imperial Knight Examination even without winning their brackets.
Others had learned exactly how far they still had to go.
And tomorrow came the Imperial ball.
Kael looked toward Darius.
"You’re thinking about it."
"The ball?"
"Yes."
"I dislike balls."
"That is not what I asked."
Darius took a drink.
"The tournament was simple."
Victor laughed.
"Simple?"
"In comparison."
Damien frowned.
"To what?"
Darius looked around the table.
"To a room filled with Imperial heirs, noble Houses, newly accepted knights, military officers, marriage interests, recruitment offers, promises, and people pretending they are only there to celebrate."
The table became quieter.
Kael leaned back.
There it was.
The next stage.
The examination had measured skill.
The tournament had measured performance under pressure.
The ball would measure something else entirely.
Who approached whom.
Who recruited.
Who refused.
Who aligned.
Who watched.
And who believed a single good tournament had suddenly made them more valuable than they really were.
Victor looked at his championship crest.
Then at Darius.
"You’re saying tomorrow is harder."
"Yes."
Damien sighed.
"I preferred Corren Dain."
Elias nodded.
"At least he tried to hit you honestly."
Kael smiled.
The tournament had ended with a clean result.
The politics would not.
And tomorrow night, every major Imperial heir would enter the same room with the newest generation of Imperial knights.
Cassian.
Seraphine.
Elena.
Adrian.
Marcus.
Elara.
Kael.
Victor.
The others.
Each would watch.
Each would judge.
Some would recruit openly.
Others would not have to.
Kael looked around the table at the people Blackwood had brought with him.
The Imperial Knight Examination was ending.
The real competition for what came afterward was about to begin.
