Chapter 96: The Beast Beneath the Lake
The lake exploded.
BOOOOOOM!
Water surged into the air.
Soldiers screamed as waves crashed across the shoreline.
Horses broke their restraints and ran.
Tents were ripped from the ground.
Kael immediately activated Night Aura.
Dark energy wrapped around his legs.
"EVERYONE BACK!"
His command cut through the chaos.
Darius began shouting orders.
"Get the civilians away from the water!"
"Protect the horses!"
"Shields forward!"
The Black Dragons moved.
Fifty soldiers who had once struggled to operate as a single unit now reacted almost instinctively.
They formed a defensive line between the lake and the camp.
Kael stared into the water.
The enormous eyes were gone.
But something was moving beneath the surface.
Fast.
Very fast.
The lake suddenly erupted again.
A massive tail slammed into the shoreline.
CRAAAAASH!
Several soldiers were thrown backward.
Kael moved.
WHOOSH!
Night Frost Step carried him across the wet ground.
He created an ice platform beneath his feet.
Then another.
He accelerated toward the creature.
The monster emerged halfway from the lake.
It was enormous.
At least twenty meters long.
Its body resembled a serpent, but thick armored plates covered its back.
Four enormous fins extended from its sides.
Its head alone was larger than a wagon.
Kael landed on the water.
The creature opened its jaws.
Inside were rows of long teeth.
Kael stared.
"...Definitely not friendly."
The creature lunged.
Kael moved.
BOOM!
Its jaws snapped shut where he had been standing.
Kael slid across the frozen surface.
He turned.
His sword came out.
Ice formed along the blade.
Kael struck the creature’s armored head.
CLANG!
The impact barely affected it.
Kael was thrown backward.
He landed on the shore.
His boots dug into the ground.
"That armor is ridiculous."
The system appeared.

The soldiers scattered.
A second later—

The creature burst from the water.
A wave crashed into the camp.
Kael raised both hands.
Ice erupted from the ground.
A massive wall formed between the soldiers and the water.
CRACK!
The wave slammed into it.
The ice wall held.
For a moment.
Then cracks appeared.
Kael gritted his teeth.
"Move!"
The soldiers pulled the civilians farther away.
The ice shattered.
Water flooded the campsite.
Kael jumped.
Light surrounded his body.
He rose into the air.
The creature followed.
Kael twisted.
Blood magic activated.
Ten crimson needles formed around him.
He launched them.
WHOOSH!
The needles struck the creature’s eyes.
The beast recoiled.
Kael used the opening.
Night Aura exploded around his legs.
He accelerated downward.
Ice formed around his fist.
Then—
BOOM!
His fist slammed into the creature’s armored skull.
The beast crashed back into the lake.
Kael landed on the water.
He slid backward.
His breathing became heavier.
The creature was hurt.
But not nearly enough.
Kael Changes His Strategy
Kael stared at the lake.
He had been making the same mistake.
Trying to overpower it.
That wasn’t going to work.
The creature was much larger.
Much heavier.
And it had the advantage of fighting in water.
Kael needed to control the battlefield.
He raised both hands.
Ice spread across the lake.
Slowly at first.
Then faster.

The surface froze.
The creature moved beneath the ice.
Kael continued.
More ice.

The frozen surface expanded.
Darius understood.
"He’s trying to trap it!"

The lake was becoming his battlefield.
The Beast Breaks Free
The ice suddenly exploded.
The creature burst through.
Kael jumped.
The beast’s tail swept toward him.
Kael created an ice platform.
He landed.
The tail struck.
The platform shattered.
Kael fell.
He activated Night Aura.
WHOOSH!
He changed direction in midair.
The tail passed beneath him.
Kael landed on the creature’s back.
His sword struck between two armored plates.
CRACK!
The blade penetrated.
The creature screamed.
Kael grabbed the sword with both hands.
Blood magic flowed into the wound.
The creature thrashed.
Kael nearly fell.
"Hold still!"
The beast rolled.
Kael jumped away just before it slammed into the frozen lake.
He landed on the ice.
The creature’s head emerged.
Kael noticed something.
The monster wasn’t looking at him.
It was looking toward the camp.
Specifically...
The containers holding the expedition’s supplies.
Kael’s expression changed.
"Wait."
He lowered his sword.
"You’re not attacking us."
Darius looked confused.
"What?"
Kael pointed.
"Look at its eyes."
The creature wasn’t focused on the soldiers anymore.
It was focused on something else.
Kael followed its gaze.
One of the expedition’s wagons had been knocked over.
Inside was a sealed wooden crate.
Kael recognized it.
The crate contained the monster cores and ancient materials recovered during the expedition.
One particular object had been taken from the Elderwood.
A small stone fragment from the underground mechanism.
Kael’s eyes widened.
"The artifact."
Kael rushed toward the wagon.
He opened the crate.
The stone fragment was glowing.
The aquatic beast roared.
The egg inside Kael’s belongings suddenly responded.
THUMP.
Kael froze.
Then—
THUMP.
The lake guardian stopped attacking.
Kael slowly looked between the egg and the artifact.
"They’re reacting to each other."

Then stepped away.
The creature approached.

Then lowered its head.

The beast relaxed.
Kael finally understood.
It wasn’t trying to attack them.
It was trying to get the artifact.
Perhaps it had recognized something that Kael hadn’t.
Kael looked toward the water.
"You wanted this returned."
The creature remained still.
Kael picked up the artifact.
Darius immediately approached.
"Are you sure?"
"No."
Darius frowned.
Kael smiled slightly.
"But I’m going to find out."
Returning What Was Taken
Kael walked to the edge of the lake.
The water was freezing.
He stepped onto the surface.
Ice formed beneath his feet.
He slowly approached the center.
The creature watched.
Kael placed the artifact into the water.
For several seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then—
The entire lake began glowing.
Blue light spread beneath the surface.
Ancient symbols appeared.
The creature lowered itself.
Kael stepped backward.
Something enormous moved beneath him.
Not the guardian.
Something else.
Kael’s expression changed.
"There’s something down there."
The guardian suddenly turned toward the deeper part of the lake.
It roared.
Not at Kael.
At whatever was beneath them.
The water began swirling.
The lake receded.
Not completely.
But enough to reveal something beneath the surface.
Stone.
An enormous staircase descended into darkness.
The expedition soldiers stared.
Walter whispered:
"There’s a city under the lake."
Kael looked down.
Ancient pillars emerged from the water.
Ruined buildings.
Statues.
A massive doorway.
The entire structure had been submerged for centuries.
Colonel Gareth approached.
"How long has that been there?"
Kael shook his head.
"Longer than the Empire."
Darius looked at the guardian.
"So it was protecting the ruins."
Kael nodded.
"Maybe."
The Decision
Gareth looked toward Kael.
"Do we investigate?"
Kael stared down at the ancient staircase.
Every instinct told him yes.
But the expedition was exhausted.
The civilians were still shaken.
And the capital was close.
"We don’t go down tonight."
Gareth nodded.
"Agreed."
Kael looked at the ruins one last time.
"We mark the location."
"We report it to the Emperor."
"And later..."
He looked toward the enormous guardian.
"...someone comes back properly prepared."
The creature watched Kael.
Then slowly disappeared beneath the water.
The blue light faded.
The lake became still.
The soldiers spent the next hour rebuilding the camp.
Kael watched them.
Nobody complained.
Nobody argued.
They simply worked.
The fifty soldiers had changed.
They were beginning to understand what it meant to function as a company.
Darius approached.
"You realize this expedition has turned into something completely different."
Kael looked toward the lake.
"I know."
"First the mountains."
"Then the forest."
"Now an underwater ruin."
Kael smiled.
"And we’re still not home."
Darius laughed.
"At this rate, we’ll never make it back."
Kael looked at him.
"We will."
Then his expression became serious.
"But when we do..."
He looked toward the distant road.
"We need to talk to the Emperor."
"About the ruins?"
"About everything."
That night...
Kael sat alone.
The mysterious egg rested beside him.
He stared at it.
The shell remained silent.
Then—
Thump.
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
Another pulse.
Thump.
The egg began glowing faintly.
But this time...
The light wasn’t silver.
It was blue.
Kael looked toward the lake.
The water was completely still.
Yet deep beneath its surface...
Something answered.
Thump.
Kael’s eyes widened.
