Chapter 120: Beneath the Mountain
The darkness beyond the stone doorway seemed to swallow the daylight.
Kael remained still.
The sound came again.
Thump.
The ground beneath his boots trembled.
Thump.
Torren slowly raised his weapon.
"That isn’t the mountain."
Kael didn’t answer.
He could feel it now.
A pulse.
Not through his ears.
Through his body.
His blood power stirred first.
Then the ice within him.
Finally, the darkness surrounding his night aura responded.
The three powers reacted to the same presence.
Kael tightened his grip on his sword.
"Stay behind me."
Torren frowned.
"That usually means we’re walking toward something dangerous."
Kael stepped through the doorway.
"It does."
Lyra followed.
The others entered behind them.
The moment Kael crossed the threshold, the temperature dropped.
His breath became visible.
The walls were covered with ancient carvings.
Some showed warriors.
Others showed enormous beasts.
But one carving made Kael stop.
It showed a group of people standing before something enormous.
Chains surrounded the creature.
Above it was the same symbol.
Three curved lines.
A circle.
Kael moved closer.
"What is that?"
Lyra looked at the carving.
"I don’t know."
Kael reached toward it.
The system appeared.
[Ancient inscription detected.]
Kael waited.
[Translation incomplete.]
He frowned.
"Of course."
Torren looked at him.
"What?"
"Nothing."
They continued deeper.
The passage descended gradually.
The air became colder.
Their footsteps echoed through the stone.
Nobody spoke for several minutes.
Then they reached a split in the passage.
Three paths.
Kael examined the ground.
One passage had fresh tracks.
The second was covered in dust.
The third had a faint trail of dark liquid.
Torren pointed toward the first.
"The creatures came this way."
Kael looked at the dark trail.
"They may have."
"But you don’t think they did."
Kael shook his head.
"They were running."
He pointed toward the third passage.
"This came from deeper inside."
Lyra looked at him.
"Blood?"
Kael crouched and touched it.
His fingers tingled.
He pulled his hand away.
"No."
"What is it?"
"I don’t know."
The system remained silent.
Kael stood.
"We take the third path."
Torren sighed.
"Of course we do."
The passage became narrower.
Eventually, they had to walk single file.
Kael went first.
His sword remained drawn.
The walls began changing.
The stone was no longer natural.
Someone had shaped it.
Ancient pillars stood along the sides.
Many had collapsed.
At the base of one pillar, Kael found a broken weapon.
He picked it up.
The metal crumbled in his hand.
"Old."
Lyra examined the remains.
"Very old."
Kael looked at the carvings again.
The warriors depicted here weren’t dressed like soldiers from the current Empire.
Their armor was different.
Their weapons were larger.
And behind them stood creatures unlike anything Kael had seen.
One carving showed a massive beast with horns.
Another showed something with wings.
Another looked almost human.
All of them were fighting the same enemy.
A dark shape.
Kael stared at it.
The darkness had no face.
No recognizable body.
Only two enormous eyes.
His blood ran cold.
The image from his vision.
Chains.
Black water.
Those eyes.
Kael stepped closer.
"These people fought it."
Torren looked at the carving.
"Fought what?"
Kael touched the stone.
"The thing beneath the mountain."
The passage suddenly shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Everyone drew their weapons.
Then came the sound.
Thump.
This time it was louder.
The walls vibrated.
Thump.
Kael felt his night aura spread across his shoulders.
He immediately forced it back.
Something inside him responded to the presence.
Something that shouldn’t have.
Kael looked at his hand.
"What is happening to me?"
Lyra heard him.
"What?"
"Nothing."
He continued walking.
The passage opened into a massive chamber.
Everyone stopped.
The room was enormous.
Pillars stretched toward the darkness above.
At the center stood a circular platform.
Chains covered it.
Not ordinary chains.
They were enormous.
Each one was thicker than a man’s body.
They disappeared into the stone floor.
Torren stared.
"What could require chains like those?"
Kael slowly approached.
The chains were covered with the same symbol.
Three curved lines around a circle.
Kael stopped at the edge of the platform.
The system appeared.
[Unknown ancient structure detected.]
Then another message.
[Energy concentration: Extremely high.]
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
He looked down.
There was a crack in the platform.
Black liquid seeped through it.
The same substance from the village well.
Kael stepped backward.
"Nobody touch it."
Torren nodded.
"Wasn’t planning to."
A sound came from beneath the platform.
Not a heartbeat this time.
A voice.
Barely audible.
Kael froze.
"Kael..."
His eyes widened.
Torren looked at him.
"What?"
Kael stared at the platform.
"You didn’t hear that?"
"Hear what?"
The voice came again.
"Kael..."
This time, he knew it.
It was calling him.
Not by title.
Not by bloodline.
By name.
Kael’s hand tightened around his sword.
"Who are you?"
Silence.
Then—
BOOM.
The platform cracked.
One of the enormous chains snapped.
The sound shook the chamber.
Everyone staggered.
Kael raised his sword.
The remaining chains tightened.
Something beneath the platform moved.
Torren’s voice trembled.
"We should leave."
Kael agreed.
"Yes."
He turned.
Then stopped.
Something had appeared on the wall behind them.
A new inscription.
It had not been there before.
The stone was glowing faintly.
Kael approached.
Three words were carved into it.
He read them slowly.
THE SEAL WEAKENS.
Kael’s expression hardened.
Another line appeared beneath it.
THE BLOOD HAS RETURNED.
Kael stared at the words.
His blood power surged.
Ice spread across his fingers.
His night aura rose around him.
All three powers reacted at once.
And beneath the mountain...
Something laughed.
Kael immediately turned toward the others.
"Run."
This time, nobody questioned him.
They sprinted toward the passage.
Behind them, another chain snapped.
BOOM.
The mountain shook.
Stone fell from the ceiling.
Kael raised his hand.
Ice spread across the collapsing passage, holding the falling stones long enough for everyone to pass.
"Keep moving!"
They ran.
Kael was the last one through.
He looked back once.
The darkness inside the chamber had changed.
Two faint points of light stared back at him.
Eyes.
Kael froze for half a heartbeat.
Then the passage collapsed.
A wall of stone crashed down between them.
Kael stood there, breathing heavily.
Torren looked at him.
"What did you see?"
Kael stared at the collapsed passage.
"Something that shouldn’t be awake."
He turned toward the exit.
"We’re going to the capital."
"Now?"
"Now."
Kael looked back one final time.
The mountain had gone silent.
But he knew silence didn’t mean safety.
It meant whatever was beneath them had stopped moving.
For the moment.
And somewhere far beneath the stone, another ancient chain slowly began to crack.
