Chapter 157: The Secret of the Asterion Blood
Morning came quietly.
Too quietly.
Kael sat beside the dying campfire, staring at the western ruins.
He had not slept.
Not after hearing those words.
Ask your father.
The words continued repeating in his mind.
Darius approached and sat across from him.
"You’ve been awake all night."
Kael didn’t look at him.
"I’ve been thinking."
"About what it said?"
Kael nodded.
Darius remained silent.
After several seconds, Kael finally spoke.
"It called me an Asterion."
"You are one."
"It said my bloodline was born from theirs."
Darius frowned.
"That could mean many things."
"It could."
Kael looked down at his hands.
"But then it said something else."
Darius waited.
"Ask your father."
The First Commander became quiet.
Kael finally looked at him.
"How much do you know about the Imperial family’s history?"
"Not enough to answer that."
"Do you know anything about the First Emperor?"
Darius shook his head.
"Only what every Imperial citizen knows."
Kael stared at the fire.
"The First Emperor united humanity after the First War."
"Yes."
"He established the Empire."
"Yes."
"And the Asterion bloodline has ruled ever since."
Darius nodded.
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Then why would an ancient creature say our bloodline came from theirs?"
Darius didn’t answer.
Because neither of them knew.
Grom approached from behind.
"My lord."
Kael turned.
"The scouts are ready."
Kael stood.
"Good."
Grom looked at him.
"You look troubled."
Kael gave him a faint smile.
"I have a few questions."
"About the ruins?"
"About my family."
Grom didn’t push.
Instead, he simply nodded.
"Then we should find answers."
Kael looked at him.
"You don’t think this is dangerous?"
Grom laughed.
"Everything around you is dangerous."
Darius smiled.
"He’s not wrong."
Kael shook his head.
"Let’s finish the survey."
The expedition returned to the ruins.
But this time, Kael kept his distance.
The ancient doorway remained sealed.
The blue glow was gone.
The enormous creature—Azerion—was nowhere to be seen.
Darius divided the soldiers into groups.
"Nobody approaches the ruins."
The soldiers nodded.
"Map the surrounding area."
"Yes, Commander."
Kael watched as they spread out.
He opened his system.
Imperial Spy Network.
Azure Scout Bird available.
Kael summoned it.
A small blue bird appeared above his hand.
It immediately flew toward the sky.
Kael closed his eyes.
His vision shifted.
The forest appeared from above.
He could see the Black Dragon below.
The river.
The ruins.
The valley.
Then he noticed something.
"Wait."
Darius looked at him.
"What?"
Kael pointed toward the southern ridge.
"There."
Darius looked.
"I don’t see anything."
"There’s movement."
Darius immediately sent two scouts.
A few minutes later, they returned.
One carried a piece of cloth.
"My lord."
Kael took it.
It was black.
There was an emblem stitched into it.
A broken circle surrounding a vertical line.
Darius’s expression hardened.
"That isn’t Imperial."
Kael studied it.
"No."
Grom sniffed it.
"People."
Kael looked at him.
"You can smell them?"
"Recent."
Darius took the cloth.
"How recent?"
Grom looked toward the southern forest.
"Yesterday."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
Someone else had been here.
And they had arrived before the seal began deteriorating.
Darius immediately ordered the scouts to search the area.
They found footprints.
Several sets.
Boots.
Human.
They followed the trail for nearly an hour.
It ended beside an old stone marker.
Kael approached it.
The System appeared.
Ancient Imperial Marker Detected.
Historical Era: First Imperial Age
Inscription partially damaged.
Kael brushed away the dirt.
Words appeared.
"By decree of the First Emperor..."
The remainder had been destroyed.
Kael stared.
Darius stepped beside him.
"First Emperor."
Kael nodded.
"Again."
He looked around.
The ruins.
The ancient dragon.
The seal.
The mysterious travelers.
And now a decree from the First Emperor.
There was too much connecting everything.
Kael placed his hand against the stone.
The System reacted.
Historical Memory Fragment Detected.
Kael’s eyes widened.
A brief image flashed through his mind.
A battlefield.
Fire.
Dragons flying through a red sky.
Thousands of soldiers.
And at the center...
A man wearing black armor.
His face was impossible to see.
But Kael could feel the power surrounding him.
The vision changed.
The same man stood before a massive dragon.
The dragon lowered its head.
Then—
The vision disappeared.
Kael stumbled backward.
Darius caught him.
"My lord!"
Kael breathed heavily.
"What did you see?"
Kael looked toward the stone.
"I don’t know."
He paused.
"But the First Emperor was there."
Darius frowned.
"Fighting the dragons?"
"I couldn’t tell."
Kael looked at his hand.
His blood was reacting.
A faint red glow pulsed beneath his skin.
Then the Ice Power appeared.
Frost spread across his fingers.
The two powers briefly existed together.
Ice.
Blood.
Two completely different forces.
Yet somehow...
both responded to the ancient memory.
The System appeared.
Bloodline Resonance Detected.
Ice Affinity Resonance Detected.
Ancient Memory Fragment: 3% Recovered.
Kael stared.
"Three percent?"
Darius looked at the notification.
"You can recover memories?"
"Apparently."
"Then we need to find more."
Kael nodded.
But before he could continue—
A horn sounded from the northern ridge.
Everyone turned.
One of the scouts came running.
"Commander!"
Darius immediately moved toward him.
"What happened?"
"We found a camp."
"Whose?"
The scout swallowed.
"Humans."
Darius’s eyes narrowed.
"How many?"
"At least twenty."
Kael stepped forward.
"Are they still there?"
The scout shook his head.
"No."
"What did they leave behind?"
The scout hesitated.
"A symbol."
Kael’s expression hardened.
"The same one?"
The scout nodded.
"Yes."
Darius looked at Kael.
"Then we’re not alone."
They reached the abandoned camp shortly afterward.
There were signs of a hurried departure.
Bedrolls.
Empty food containers.
Broken equipment.
And several crates.
Kael opened one.
Inside were mana crystals.
Military quality.
Darius immediately recognized them.
"These aren’t cheap."
Kael looked at the equipment.
"Whoever they are, they’re organized."
Grom picked up a discarded dagger.
"This was made in the Empire."
Darius examined the blade.
"You’re right."
Kael’s expression became serious.
"Then whoever came here..."
He looked toward the western ruins.
"...may have ties to the Imperial Empire."
The discovery changed everything.
This wasn’t simply an ancient mystery anymore.
Someone in the present day was investigating the ruins.
Someone with Imperial equipment.
And they had been here before Kael.
Kael looked at Darius.
"We return to Blackwood."
Darius nodded.
"Immediately?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Kael looked toward the horizon.
"Because I need to speak to my father."
His voice became colder.
"And this time..."
He clenched his fist.
"...I want answers."
