Chapter 152: Something in the Forest
The shadow moved silently through the western valley.
Five scouts stood around the temporary camp, unaware of what watched them from between the trees.
A small fire burned near the center of the camp.
One scout sharpened his blade.
Another studied the surrounding forest.
The third examined the map.
The remaining two stood watch.
Then—
A branch snapped.
Everyone froze.
The scout nearest the forest immediately stood.
"Did you hear that?"
The others reached for their weapons.
Silence.
The wind moved through the trees.
Nothing else.
The scout slowly lowered his hand.
"Probably an animal."
The older soldier beside him shook his head.
"No."
"What?"
"Animals don’t move like that."
He pointed toward the darkness.
"There."
Everyone looked.
Nothing.
Then the system notification appeared.

Kael wasn’t there to see it.
But one of the scouts suddenly felt the air change.
He whispered,
"Something is watching us."

Kael stood beside the new notice board in Blackwood’s marketplace.

People were already placing their names beneath several notices.

Builders searched for laborers.
Merchants searched for assistants.

Orrin stood beside Kael.
"You see?"
Kael nodded.

"The board?"

Orrin smiled.
"People don’t always need charity."
Kael looked at him.
"They need a chance."
"Exactly."
Orrin gestured toward the growing settlement.
"Give them work, and they’ll build your territory for you."
Kael smiled.
"Careful."
"About what?"
"You sound like a politician."
Orrin laughed.
"I’d rather be rich."
Kael spent the afternoon reviewing Blackwood’s finances.
The numbers were encouraging.
Trade was increasing.
Tax revenue was still modest but growing.
Construction costs remained high.
Food production was improving.
The largest expense remained military spending.
Kael leaned back.
"We need another source of income."
Lily looked over the ledger.
"We could raise taxes."
Kael immediately shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because we’re trying to attract people."
He tapped the page.
"Raising taxes now would discourage merchants and settlers."
Lily nodded.
"Then what?"
Kael looked toward the marketplace.
"Trade."
"We already have trade."
"Not enough."
Kael stood.
"I want Blackwood producing things other territories don’t."
Lily followed him.
"Such as?"
Kael thought about it.
"Food."
"Everyone has food."
"Not what I’m thinking."
He looked toward the farms.
"Special crops."
Lily raised an eyebrow.
"What kind?"
Kael smiled.
"I don’t know yet."
They visited the farms that afternoon.
Walter was inspecting several fields.
"My lord."
Kael looked over the crops.
"What grows best here?"
Walter answered immediately.
"Grain."
"Anything else?"
"Root vegetables."
"Fruit?"
"Some."
Kael crouched and touched the soil.
It was rich.
Very rich.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

He had seen similar readings before.

The fire went out.

Then two pale eyes appeared beyond the trees.
The soldiers raised their weapons.
"Formation!"
The Black Dragon moved instantly.

Spears forward.
Something stepped from the forest.
It was enormous.
A beast covered in dark scales.
Four legs.
A long tail.
Curved horns.
And glowing eyes.
The soldiers stared.
One whispered,
"That’s no ordinary beast."
The creature lowered its head.
Then—
It roared.
The sound shook the valley.
Birds exploded from the trees.
The soldiers tightened their formation.
The communication crystal finally activated.
A scout spoke into it.
"Blackwood observation post to headquarters."
Static answered.
Then—
"We have encountered a large unidentified creature."
A pause.
"It appears to be guarding the ruins."
Far away...
Kael suddenly stopped while walking through the manor.
His eyes narrowed.
The system appeared.

Connection Established.
Kael’s vision shifted.
For a brief moment...
He saw through the eyes of the Azure Scout Bird flying above the western forest.
Below—
Five Black Dragon soldiers stood in formation.
And beyond them...
A massive creature stood before the ancient ruins.
Kael’s expression hardened.
"Darius."
The first commander entered the room immediately.
"My lord?"
Kael pointed toward the window.
"Prepare the Black Dragon."
Darius didn’t ask why.
He saw Kael’s expression.
"What happened?"
Kael’s voice became quiet.
"Something has entered the western valley."
Darius reached for his sword.
"How dangerous?"
Kael looked through the scout bird’s eyes again.
The creature roared.
The image shook.
Kael slowly closed his hand.
"I don’t know."
He looked at Darius.
