The Invincible Strongest Student

Chapter 1289: The Murderer’s Background

Wu Yong was still sitting on the sofa smoking, he looked at Lin Tian in puzzlement and asked, "I still haven’t asked you what the background of those two foreign guys is. I heard from Tian Ming they’re both experts?"

Compared to a year ago, Wu Yong had changed a lot. The boyishness on his face had faded, his features seemed sharper, and in those not‑so‑large eyes there was a shrewd glint.

In outsiders’ eyes, Wu Yong had a very obvious trait—mood swings. He wore a face that looked harmless to humans and animals, but no one knew what was going on in his head.

Today’s ambush on Lin Tian and Zhang Ya’Er, Wu Yong on the surface didn’t seem to care much. Instead he crossed one leg over the other, smoking and chatting, looking like some idle guy with nothing to do.

But in his heart he was taking it extremely seriously. Lin Tian was his closest buddy, they’d grown up together since they were kids. How could Wu Yong not care about his safety? If he really didn’t care, he wouldn’t be here in the rest room outside the operating theater waiting for the result.

Don’t be fooled by how calm he looked now—once everything came to light, his methods would be brutal. Forget the old stuff, just look at the recent one: that concussion guy, Wu Yong already had plans for him. Once the guy had no more use value, he’d send him a "combo meal". Either cripple one hand, or ruin an arm, or...make that concussion worse, turn him into a brain‑dead idiot.

Lin Tian said, "We were tailed for a short stretch on the road, then they disappeared. I thought they’d backed off. Didn’t expect them to be waiting at the company entrance. That moderate‑concussion one was lying in ambush in front, I took him down, then another one popped out behind and slashed Zhang Ya’Er."

"They were coming for you?"

Lin Tian nodded and said, "Should be. Otherwise they wouldn’t wait at the company entrance. Besides, even though Zhang Ya’Er sniped Wang Daoran’s secretary, the secretary and Wang Daoran both went in, and so did the people from the牌技场. I can’t think of anyone else who’d go after her that hard. Downstairs just now it was really dangerous—after that Qing Continent guy stabbed her once in the back, he still wanted to chop off one of her arms. I only stopped him in time."

"Then who was targeting you?" Wu Yong asked in a low voice.

Lin Tian thought about it, but nothing clear came to mind. He felt it was unlikely to be the Wang Family, the Xu Family, Kun Yun and his disciple, or those Sakula Country ninjas. Because they all knew he wasn’t an ordinary guy—don’t say two Qing Continent soldiers, even twenty wouldn’t be his match.

They wouldn’t do something so pointless that would only piss him off.

In the end, Lin Tian started suspecting it might be the Wolf Fang Mercenaries.

But that didn’t add up either!

The Wolf Fang Mercenaries were abroad right now, and their enemy at the moment should be Xu Haohai, not him. It made no sense for them to come all this way just to deal with him. Plus, from their perspective he had nothing to do with them at all. And they shouldn’t be using bone‑cutting knives, they’d be using hot weapons.

After ruling out all the answers, Lin Tian felt a bit lost.

Suddenly Li said, "No, no, I feel like those people were actually coming for that chick."

"How so?"

Li analyzed, "If it were your enemy, they’d know how good you are, so they wouldn’t just send two guys like that. And that Qing Continent guy first stabbed her in the back, then went for her arm. That kind of vicious move—clearly there’s some deep grudge there!"

Hearing Li lay it out like that, a light flashed in Wu Yong’s mind and he said, "You think...could it be that foreigner from the牌技场, the one who got his fingers chopped off? The one called DS or whatever?"

Lin Tian’s earlier train of thought had gone into a dead end, he hadn’t thought of this at all. Now with the two of them saying it, everything lined up!

Same East Continent folk, DS had three fingers cut off, and that Qing Continent guy wanted to chop off Zhang Ya’Er’s arm—an eye for an eye. It all suddenly made sense.

In that instant of realization, the sense of guilt Lin Tian felt toward Zhang Ya’Er vanished. He’d thought he’d gotten her into this, but now it looked like it wasn’t really about him.

Even so, Lin Tian still planned to take revenge for Zhang Ya’Er. After all, she basically counted as one of their people now, and it had happened right in front of him. Emotionally and logically, he couldn’t just sit back and watch!

Having figured it out, Lin Tian immediately pulled out his phone and told Tian Ming about it. Compared to the Qing Continent guy with the shoulder wound, the DS with three fingers missing would be much easier to track down.

After talking with He Tianming, Lin Tian called Liou Qingcheng, telling her he wouldn’t be coming back tonight. He didn’t spell out the reason, and Liou Qingcheng didn’t ask, she just reminded him he still had class tomorrow and not to skip it.

After hanging up, Lin Tian sat back down on the sofa. Suddenly Li asked again, "Number Two, I’ve got another question. From what you said just now, all I know is that this woman has connections in the牌技场, but have you checked her background? If it’s unclear, I’m not comfortable having her as my assistant."

"I already had Pang Yu look into her. This woman dropped out of school after junior high in China, then went to the牌技场 on East Continent to scrape by. Her skills at the table are high, she and DS were both invited over as stabilizing draws for the place. She’s clean enough."

"Then that’s fine."

Wu Yong patted Li on the shoulder and joked, "You’ve been complaining you’ve got too much on your plate and not enough time. Now we finally found you an assistant, and she’s a stunning beauty to boot, yet you keep trying to push her away. Don’t tell me..."

At this point, Wu Yong suddenly scooted his butt over, putting a bit of distance between himself and Li. Only then did he continue with a weird look on his face, "Don’t tell me...you’re gay? Into guys?"

Li was so pissed his face went a shade paler. He glared and cursed, "You damn mutt, nothing but shit comes out of your mouth! I’m just approaching work rationally, that’s called keeping business and personal separate! And if I were gay, I still wouldn’t go for you!"

"What’s that supposed to mean?"

Lin Tian watched the two clowns bicker and chimed in, "You really don’t get it? He’s saying you’re ugly."

"Hey!" Wu Yong made a mock gesture of rolling up his sleeves, raised his brows and said, "Kid, if I beat your pretty face to a pulp, wouldn’t that make you uglier than me?"

Li replied with a squinty smile, "Even if my face gets wrecked as badly as possible, I’d still look better than you."

"Hey, I’m really gonna have to send you into the operating room for emergency treatment today!"

Seeing the two of them about to throw down, Lin Tian grabbed Wu Yong’s arm and said, "Enough, the operating room’s right behind us, don’t make a scene. Can’t you see the ’No Loud Noise’ sign on the wall?"

Wu Yong actually stopped, but he rolled his eyes and said, "The wall also says ’No Smoking’."

Lin Tian spread his hands. "But I’m not smoking."

"Me neither." Wu Yong glanced at Li and laughed, "This guy’s still smoking. Under circumstances like this, shouldn’t we dock his pay?"

Li leaned back on the sofa, completely fearless, blowing smoke rings as he said, "Dock away, dock away. Worst case, I’ll embezzle it back. I’m not taking that kind of loss."

Wu Yong’s eyebrows twitched twice and he growled, "Listen to how cocky you are! I’ve got a real bad temper, you know that!"

Just then, the door of the operating room suddenly clicked open.
