Chapter 1858 - 1863: Earning One’s Own Living
Remarkably lucky to dodge the demon beast’s attack, Lin Fei slowly lowered the hand he had just raised, astonished at the child’s good fortune.
At that moment, the child seemed to realize something. Seeing he was unscathed, he immediately looked at the demon beast, then picked up a stone and hurled it at the beast.
Lin Fei chuckled and stepped in, because the demon beast was unlikely to miss a second time and had already lunged at the boy. The boy attempted to dodge, but his speed was no match for the demon beast, and if ignored, would certainly be knocked down and devoured.
Swish!
A flash of sword light slashed through. Lin Fei didn’t act, but the island did. The beast was cleaved in two by a single strike from Xiaoguang. Blood sprayed everywhere, splattering all over the child’s face. The child touched the warm blood, even some entrails hung on him, leaving him unsure of what to do.
"Okay, you won. You can eat the meat now." Lin Fei’s voice brought the child back to reality, and the child realized he wasn’t as frightened as he imagined.
Lin Fei smiled, then cleaned the small demon beast, started a fire, and placed it on to roast.
"Just wait a moment, you can eat soon." Lin Fei said, comforting the drooling little guy. This little guy performed well, at least he remained calm in the face of blood. Lin Fei admired that.
At least Lin Fei thought, if this child grows up normally, he will certainly be a fine person in the future, not like the other villagers who dare not step forward.
Finally, the meat was cooked, a golden brown, with a layer of grease and an inviting aroma. Lin Fei handed the meat to the child, saying, "Eat up! This is your reward for your effort."
The child nodded, then bit a large piece of meat, started eating, and displayed a happy smile. This was his prey, he put in the effort and contributed his strength, making him eat with great comfort and pride.
Once rooted, this pride would sprout self-esteem, so he wouldn’t be like the other villagers, lazy and unwilling to exert effort.
Only now did Lin Fei understand why Wang Xuan made such a choice, it seems Wang Xuan also used extraordinary methods to deal with exceptional people.
Later, when Lin Fei returned after the child was full, he found someone dead here. Indeed, a demon beast must have come, but thankfully there was only one. After killing a villager, it also carried one away. They saw Lin Fei with the child who was still gnawing on the roasted meat; they gulped, but Lin Fei brought nothing back.
Lin Fei and Xiaoguang could go without food for months, let alone two days, so they only went hunting, and with such small prey at that.
At this moment, the child sat in a corner gnawing his meat, and the others did not approach, unsure what to say. After all, Lin Fei asked them to go, and they didn’t.
"Can you give me a bit to eat, please?"
A small child wriggled free from a parent’s embrace and walked towards the boy, eyeing the aromatic meat, eager to take a bite or two.
"No! This is mine, I hunted it, I put in the effort, it’s my own, you didn’t hunt, I’m not sharing with you!" the child said.
Then the child continued to savor the meat without caring or avoiding those people, refusing them even a bite; after all, they didn’t work for it.
Finally, an adult approached and said, "You’ve had enough to eat, shouldn’t you give our child a bite?" After saying that, the adult reached for the child’s meat.
"Stop." Lin Fei’s voice ordered. However, the person did not stop. Xiaoguang promptly acted, slicing off the man’s arm!
"Ah!!"
The scream shattered the silence. In an instant, everyone fell silent, terrified, staring at Lin Fei, not expecting him to actually make a move. Xiaoguang returned to Lin Fei’s side.
"You seem to have ignored my words, so I’ll let you feel the lesson of blood. If you still refuse to listen, I will cut off all your limbs and throw you into the forest, to truly understand the power of the demon beasts in it." Lin Fei said.
His voice was calm, clear, and cold!
Nobody knew why it happened this way, but Lin Fei understood. If he didn’t show them a lesson, they would always be like this. Lin Fei didn’t want that, so he didn’t hold back, severing the man’s arm then adding, "Remember, if you want something without working for it, you won’t get it here with me."
Then Lin Fei looked at the boy and said, "This stuff is yours, give it to whoever you want, but equally, if you don’t want to give it to someone, they don’t eat. Simple as that, got it?"
"Got it!" The boy nodded and said, "I have the right to decide what I hunted!"
At that moment, the General on the wall saw the child’s behavior and was very satisfied. If possible, he would let the child come in, for his values surpassed those of others, making him worthy of entering the city.
If nurtured well, he would undoubtedly become a pillar, a talent in the future.
"Alright, enjoy your meal. Tomorrow, same thing, alright?" Lin Fei asked.
"Okay! Self-reliance." The boy said, then continued to hold his piece of meat. However, seeing his little companions looking so pitiful, he let each take a bite, and soon only bones were left.
"Not even bones for those who don’t work!" The boy said after, throwing the bones away into the surrounding moat, disappearing from sight.
A number of villagers immediately ran towards the moat, hoping to retrieve the bones, yet they hadn’t expected there were demon beasts inside!
Indeed, the moat housed demon beasts, reared to consume those expendable bodies, and were quite useful.
After the villagers went in, one was pulled into the river, devoured by a demon beast, leaving the others too frightened to go in again. Falling in was no laughing matter.
"Tomorrow we continue hunting, if anyone doesn’t go and starves, I won’t care."
