Chapter 2193: Lu Meng (5)
Looking at Xiaobai’s posture, Jiaojiao understood its meaning. She let out a bitter laugh, burying her face in her hands, her heart still aching dully.
"Sss... Little Cutie... Little Cutie..."
Jiaojiao lifted her head and weakly said, "Xiaobai, can I be alone for a while?"
Xiaobai nodded its big head but didn’t leave the room. Instead, it formed a circle in the corner, resting its large head on top, just watching Jiaojiao.
Jiaojiao’s mind was in chaos, and she couldn’t think at all. All she could remember were the memories of the years spent with Lu Xian.
In fact, although she and Lu Xian grew up together, almost like childhood friends, they actually had very little time alone together, because most of the time Lu Xian was with Ruan Jie and Ruan Chi, and their meetings were usually in a group setting.
It was different with Duan Xi, with whom she had been inseparable since childhood, spending much more time alone together than with any of the Ruan Family members.
So while Jiaojiao could naturally accept Duan Xi, she was always puzzled by the fact that Lu Xian liked her. She couldn’t understand why he would like her, especially since she was so much younger, and they lived in completely different circles except during family gatherings.
If anyone were to have a crush on her, it seemed more believable for it to be Lu Zishu. After all, Lu Zishu was closer to her age, and they had been classmates for so many years, often playing and joking together.
As for Lu Xian, she never took her feelings for him too seriously. She thought it was just a matter of time, and eventually, things would settle down.
That’s what she had always believed.
But she never expected that day wouldn’t come, and he passed away before it could.
"Xiaobai, how am I supposed to face Aunty now? She has always been so kind to me since childhood, and now things have turned out like this." Jiaojiao leaned against the headboard, looking at the bright sun outside, but her heart was shrouded in gloom.
Xiaobai tilted its head and crawled over, pressing its forehead against her cheek as if silently comforting her.
Jiaojiao glanced at it, lowered her eyelids, and buried her head between her knees, trying hard to curl herself into a small ball, as if that could shield her from the painful realities of the world.
"Knock, knock." A knock sounded at the door.
Jiaojiao didn’t lift her head or bother to look. Ruan Jie pushed the door open and entered; Jiaojiao’s door was kicked in by him last night, and now it couldn’t be locked, only closed.
Ruan Jie looked at Xiaobai standing by the bed. Xiaobai stared back at him, neither giving way. Eventually, Ruan Jie could only ignore it and walked over helplessly.
As the footsteps grew nearer, Jiaojiao still didn’t lift her head until a pair of big hands landed messily on her head, ruffling her hair.
Only then did Jiaojiao lift her head, seeing Ruan Jie with a teasing smile: "Still crying? You just turned eighteen yesterday, a grown lady now. If people saw, they’d laugh."
Ordinarily, Jiaojiao would have swatted away his big hand and then clawed at him playfully, finally tossing her head and threatening to tell the Ruanlin Family or Ruan Jianguo, acting out her spoiled and willful nature. But today, she didn’t have the heart for it. She let him say what he would and buried her head back between her knees, silent and looking pitiful.
