Chapter 6: The Day the Lazy Heir Awakened 2
The grand hall of the Vortex estate thrummed with expectation. Sunlight streamed through the towering windows, scattering patterns across marble floors polished to a mirror’s gleam.
Nobles filled every seat, their silks and jewels shimmering in the light, yet all eyes were fixed on the raised dais at the front of the hall.
Beneath the vaulted ceiling, the sacred Orb of Truth rested upon its pedestal, a crystalline sphere the size of a man’s head, its depth swirling with iridescent light like captured starlight.
The air around it seemed to hum, rippling with unseen power, a silent reminder of the weight of this ceremony.
"Present the boy," a voice commanded, deep and firm.
The double doors eased open, and I stepped into the hall.
My silver hair caught the sunlight, glinting like threads of frost, and my sky-blue eyes scanned the room lazily.
Each step echoed against the stone floor as I approached the dais, the murmurs of the nobles fading into breathless silence.
I could feel them all, every gaze, every whisper of judgement. They had heard the rumours, the tales of the lazy heir who did nothing but stay in his room and sleep.
Even now, their thoughts were heavy in the air:
’Would he fail?’
’Would he bring shame to his house?’
But I had long since stopped caring about their whispers. My steps were slow, deliberate, as if the weight of the hall itself could not touch me.
In front of me, the Orb of Truth shimmered with an inner light, its surface reflecting the gathered nobles and the gilded hall around us. Beside it stood the officiant, robed in white and gold, his face composed and solemn. Yet my eyes were fixed on the two figures behind the sacred orb, my stepmother and my father.
My stepmother’s gaze was sharp, her grey eyes cold and calculating, flicking over me with an intensity that made no attempt to hide her thoughts. I could almost hear the gears turning in her mind, already strategizing how to twist the outcome of my awakening to her benefit. Whether I failed or succeeded, she would be ready to act.
But my father... he surprised me.
Gone was the stern, unyielding expression I had come to expect in our rare encounters. In its place was a face worn with fatigue, his shoulders heavy beneath his ceremonial attire. The weight of the estate, of expectations, and perhaps of private doubts seemed etched into the lines around his eyes. For the first time, he looked not like the distant, untouchable Duke, but like a man shouldering too many burdens.
A flicker of something unfamiliar stirred in my chest as I studied his weariness, pity, perhaps, or a faint thread of connection that had never been there before. Whatever the result of this awakening, I realized, would ripple through him more deeply than I had ever imagined.
With a steadying breath, I stepped closer to the Orb of Truth, the hall hushed to a silence that felt almost sacred, and the weight of every gaze pressed down upon me.
"Place your hand on the Orb of Truth," the officiant intoned, his voice carrying across the hushed hall.
Slowly, I lifted my hands, pressing my palms against its smooth, cool surface. A faint shiver ran through me as the Orb responded, light blooming from within like the first rays of dawn.
Light flared, and the hall gasped in unison. Colours danced across the marble and tapestries, the Orb’s glow intensifying as threads of energy spiralled around my arms. My body felt weightless, my mind awash with warmth and clarity.
The Orb shuddered, and a beam of golden light shot upward, striking the vaulted ceiling and scattering like a prism. Gasps and cries rose from the crowd as the energy condensed into a single, blinding flare.
Then, as abruptly as it had begun, the light subsided, leaving ethereal words hovering above the Orb.
Potential: SSS
Title: Aegis Healer
Special Constitution: Stamina, Intelligence, Willpower
Silence gripped the hall. The nobles sat frozen, their faces caught between awe and disbelief. Some clutched the edges of their chairs; others leaned forward, eyes wide. Only the three visiting Dukes remained composed, their gazes unreadable but keen.
I withdrew my hands, blinking at the lingering afterglow.
A ripple of murmurs swept through the hall as the officiant’s voice broke the stunned hush: "Alash Vortex, heir of House Vortex, has awakened SSS potential with a unique title!"
I turned slightly, meeting the eyes of the nobles with a faint, knowing smile. Their disbelief, their jealousy, their awe— all of it washed over me like a passing breeze.

[Error]
The system warning and error messages flared before my eyes, incomprehensible in their intensity.
I had no chance to ask the system for an explanation before agony erupted within my skull. It was as if a thousand needles pierced directly into my brain, each one digging deeper, severing thought and sound alike.
My lips parted, but no cry emerged, only silence. The pain consumed me in an instant, and darkness claimed me as consciousness slipped away.

Far in the depths of a realm shrouded in darkness, beneath a sky stained crimson like a bleeding wound, four shadowed figures sat around a vast, round table of black stone. The chamber they occupied was eerily silent, save for the distant hum of energy that pulsed from the walls like a heartbeat. Three chairs stood empty, their absence echoing the gravity of the gathering.
"I have finally discovered a trace of the Akashic Key," the first figure said, his voice low and resonant, carrying a weight that silenced the others.
The second figure, draped in a cloak of moving shadows, leaned forward. "Why now? It has been ten years without a single whisper or lead. What has changed?"
The third figure’s voice was sharper, impatient. "It doesn’t matter. If you’ve found it, we should move immediately. Ten years of waiting is already ten too many."
The first figure’s eyes, faintly glowing in the dark, shifted toward the one who had spoken. "I have already sent the information to Greed and Pride. They departed the moment they received it. Unfortunately, the trace comes from a world still under the divine barrier."
The room grew heavy with silence. For a heartbeat, none of them moved.
"A protected world?" the second figure finally said, disbelief threading his tone. "Impossible. How could the Akashic Key be hidden within a mortal plane still under divine protection?"
No answer came. Only the dim pulse of the crimson sky beyond the chamber’s open windows and the weight of an enigma that defied every law they understood.
The three figures exchanged glances, the shock plain even in the obscured contours of their faces.
"Wait," the fourth figure finally spoke, her voice trembling with the weight of sudden realization. "Seven years ago, one of my subordinates discovered a small tear in the divine shield of a protected world. We’ve only been able to send demonic beasts through it so far... but could it be the same world you’re speaking of?"
