Chapter 319: A Lesson in Dominance
Two weeks have passed since the funeral of Warren Ramada. Ray was inside a quarantine cage in the Menagerie, the air inside the cage was thick with the suffocating stench of swamp water, wet musk, and the sharp, metallic tang of ozone radiating from the glowing containment runes.
The quarantine cage was a massive, heavy-duty iron construct designed to hold giant beasts. And currently, one such beast was pacing inside it.
A freshly captured Giant Swamp Crocodile, easily fifteen feet from snout to tail, thrashed at the back of the enclosure. Its thick, armored scutes were caked in dried, foul-smelling mud. It hissed, a wet, rattling sound that vibrated the iron bars, and violently snapped its jaws. The bite force echoed like a steel trap slamming shut.
Standing at the opposite side of the quarantine cage, entirely unarmed and unarmored, was Ray Croft.
A few paces behind him, standing near the heavy iron door, Master Teralyn Spero watched with intense, barely concealed anxiety. The Menagerie instructor held her right hand up, her palm glowing with a highly concentrated, shimmering containment spell, ready to blast the beast the second it inevitably charged.
"You do not have to do this, Novice Croft, the beast is very much wild yet, highly unpredictable, and was pulled from the deep bogs only a couple of days ago."
Master Teralyn called out, her voice tight with genuine concern.
Ray didn't look away from the thrashing giant predator. He didn't even adjust his stance. He simply shook his head.
"I have to do this, Master Teralyn. If I want to pass your class and be exempted for the rest of the year."
Ray said, his voice calm and clinical over the deafening hisses of the crocodile
(Flashback- One Hour Earlier)
The smell of polished wood and dried herbs permeated Master Teralyn’s office in the Menagerie. The instructor sat behind her desk, her fingers steepled as she stared at the 1st-Circle Novice standing politely on the opposite side.
"An early examination and a full exemption for the remainder of the semester? This is a highly irregular request, Novice Croft. The academic year is far from over."
Teralyn arching, arching an eyebrow.
"It indeed is irregular, Master Teralyn, but it has been done before according to the academy records. A student can request to take the exams early to pass a call if the need is necessary and unfortunately in my case Master it is indeed necessary."
Ray replied, offering a flawless, respectful bow.
"I have urgent family matters that require my immediate return to my family’s domain. I have already spoken with Headmaster Andrade. She granted me permission to leave the Academy on the strict condition that I pass the final examinations of my current courses."
Teralyn leaned back, her eyes narrowing slightly.
"Is that so?"
She tapped her desk and pulled up her master slate to access the academy system database. A holographic display flickered to life, projecting Ray's academic record in glowing blue text. She scrolled through the files, her lips pressing into a thin line.
"Interesting… It appears you have already successfully passed the final evaluations for your Advanced Runic Geometry and Applied Alchemy & Reagent Refinement earlier. Which makes my Arcane Zoology & Binding class your final hurdle."
Teralyn murmured.
"That is correct, Master Teralyn."
Ray said.
Teralyn looked at the boy. He was talented, there was no denying that, but the boy standing before her was too aloof, too detached, and entirely too confident. In the field of beast handling, arrogance was a fatal flaw. Nature did not care about a noble title or a clever mind; nature respected dominance, patience, and primal understanding.
She decided a humbling lesson was in order. A mischievous smirk tugged at the corner of Teralyn’s mouth as a brilliant, terrible idea formed in her mind.
"Very well, Novice Croft. I will grant your request for an early examination. We had a recent delivery from the southern bogs arrive just a couple of hours ago. A Giant Swamp Crocodile. It is currently in the receiving bay quarantine cage. If you can successfully break and tame the beast today, you will receive a perfect mark and your exemption."
This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
Teralyn said, standing up from her desk.
It was an impossible task, and she knew it. It would take weeks of gradual exposure, strict feeding schedules, and beast suppression techniques to break a beast of that caliber. She fully expected Ray to walk into the cage, realize the sheer terror of an unbroken predator, and humbly ask to withdraw instead.
"I accept your terms, Master Teralyn."
Ray said without a moment's hesitation.
(Back to Present Time - The Quarantine Cage)
Ray was standing in front of the giant crocodile. Before making a move, he plunged his consciousness into the Ambient Presence of his mind.
The objective is to break or tame the beast without killing it, Suggestions?
Ray stated to his mental council.
Weaver: "Ugh, look at the mud and slime on that brute. It is completely revolting. Just let me blast it and incinerate its outer scales. We establish total dominance, and we can sell the shed armor for a small fortune!"
The Crimson Weaver scoffed, his phantom robes swishing dramatically as he curled his lip in absolute disgust.
Commander: "You don't tame an asset with flashy parlor tricks. You break its command structure. It relies on its tail for momentum and its jaws for lethal force. We move in, sever the tendons in its hind legs, a calculated, non-lethal strike. Once it realizes its mobility is compromised, its morale shatters. It becomes a compliant pawn."
The Grizzled Commander said as he exhaled a thick cloud of phantom cigar smoke.
Healer: "Or it simply dies from the trauma and stress. Look at it. It is terrified, ripped violently from its home and thrown into an iron box. We could synthesize a heavy aerosol paralytic to put it to sleep... It would spare the poor creature the agony of fear, though in the end, it remains a prisoner to our whims."
The World-Weary Healer murmured. He stood off to the side, his shoulders slumped beneath the heavy weight of his fatalism.
Before the debate could continue, the Primal Naturalist stepped forward, practically vibrating with adrenaline-fueled excitement.
Naturalist: "Crikey, are you lot blind? Look at the power in those jaws! She's a beautiful and majestic beast, not a bloody pawn or a pair of boots! Give me the reins, mate. Let me take a shot at her. I know exactly what this gorgeous girl needs."
The Naturalist beamed, his eyes wide with pure, unadulterated curiosity as he cracked his knuckles, a wild grin spreading across his face.
Ray snapped his eyes open, returning to the physical world.
In the cage, Teralyn’s hand trembled slightly. The crocodile was winding up. Its massive tail whipped against the iron bars, and its cold, reptilian eyes locked onto Ray.
He's going to freeze and get hit. I'm going to have to step in before it tears him in half. This was a mistake.
Teralyn thought, her heart pounding.
Ray was still standing in front of the giant crocodile doing nothing.
System. Initiate Full Immersion. Archetype: The Primal Naturalist.
He mentally commanded as a violent, invisible shockwave rippled through Ray’s mind.
In a fraction of a second, the cold, aloof aristocratic Novice completely vanished. Ray’s posture collapsed into a loose, bouncy, incredibly relaxed stance. A wild, almost manic grin spread across his face, and his eyes lit up with pure, adrenaline-fueled euphoria. He didn't look like a student facing death; he looked like a child who had just been handed the greatest toy in the world.
The Giant Crocodile lunged, its jaws opening wide to snap Ray in half.
Ray under the control of the Primal Naturalist activated ‘Apex Predator’s Aura’ skill.
He simply planted his boots and projected his aura.
However, rather than letting the aura explode wildly in all directions, the Primal Naturalist's expert instincts funneled the threat signature into a concentrated, invisible cone aimed exclusively at the charging beast.
To Master Teralyn, it felt as though the air pressure in the cage had suddenly dropped. A brief, inexplicable shiver of lethal danger brushed against her spine, causing her breath to hitch for a fraction of a second before the feeling vanished entirely.
But to the primal, instinctual brain of the Giant Crocodile, the tiny human before it suddenly exploded with the threat signature of a world-ending leviathan. The primal pressure was suffocating, ancient, and utterly lethal.
The crocodile aborted its charge instantly. Its heavy claws scrambled frantically against the stone floor, skidding through the mud as it tried to reverse its momentum. It slammed its own back against the iron bars, flattening its massive body to the floor in absolute, terrifying submission.
The Primal Naturalist then activated ‘Beast-Speak’ skill.
Ray let out a booming, joyous laugh. He dropped his stance, bending his knees, and began clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth in a rapid, rhythmic pattern.
"Crikey, aren't you an absolute beauty!"
Ray said, his voice suddenly thick with a heavy rolling accent. Teralyn stared at him in utter bewilderment.
Ray took a step closer, completely ignoring the concept of personal space.
"Look at the size of those scutes! Absolutely gorgeous! You're just a big, misunderstood girl, aren't ya? Just a bit cranky from the travel, yeah?"
The crocodile let out a pathetic, whimpering hiss, too terrified by the Apex Predator's Aura to move a muscle as Ray casually strolled right up to its massive, bone-crushing jaws.
The Primal Naturalist activated ‘Primal Empathy & Primal Truce’ skill.
"Easy now, gorgeous. Easy."
Ray cooed. He reached out and placed his bare hand firmly, yet gently, right on the beast's muddy snout. He flooded the creature's nervous system with the soothing magic of his Primal Empathy.
The transformation was miraculous. The crocodile's rigid, trembling muscles instantly turned to jelly. The primal terror in its reptilian eyes melted away, replaced by a hazy, dopey look of absolute contentment. It let out a long, heavy exhale, blowing a puff of warm swamp air right into Ray's grinning face.
Teralyn’s jaw practically hit the floor. The impossible was happening right in front of her.
