The Legendary Method Actor

Chapter 312: The Real Trajectory

The hallway outside the abandoned passageway felt suffocatingly quiet after the revelation. Ray turned away from the jagged breach in the wall, his golden eyes locking directly onto Master Alvon and Headmaster Andrade.

"Given the forensic timeline and the surgical precision required to excise a tongue, is my attendant still your prime suspect, Master Alvon?"

Ray stated, his voice calm but unyielding,

Alvon’s jaw tightened. The Academy Head of Security hated being proven wrong, especially by a teenager, but his tactical logic and years of experience won out over his bruised ego. He looked at Rina, who was still shivering slightly from the cold of the passage, and let out a harsh breath.

"She lacks the anatomical expertise for the mutilation, and she certainly lacks the magical capacity to masquerade as a dead maid. She is no longer the prime suspect. However, until this lockdown is officially lifted, she remains a person of interest."

Alvon conceded grudgingly.

"I accept those terms.”

Ray replied, giving a stiff nod. He turned to Andrade.

“I still have roughly two hours before the agreed deadline headmaster. I intend to fulfill my promise to find the true culprit before the sun rises."

Andrade nodded, her expression grim.

"Do what you must, Novice Croft. Master Alvon and I need to secure this perimeter and completely reassess the threat level of the guests in the ballroom."

Alvon immediately pivoted, barking sharp orders at Sergeant Thomas to lock down the corridor and ensure Hannah's body remained entirely undisturbed.

Taking the opportunity to slip away from Headmaster Andrade and Master Alvon heavy presence, Ray signaled for Svane and Rina to follow him. They moved swiftly down the hall, ducking into a vacant, opulent sitting room adorned with velvet chaise lounges and heavy drapes.

As soon as the wooden doors clicked shut, Svane turned to Ray, his face deeply troubled.

"My Lord, if it is truly her... if 'K' is really in this manor, we need to alter our posture immediately, she doesn't do petty assassinations. During the Spire incident even if she involved Kaelen, she did not kill her. What if this entire murder is just a chaotic smokescreen?"

Svane warned, his deep voice dropping to a low, intense rumble.

Ray furrowed his brow. "A smokescreen for what?"

"For you. What if her actual target tonight is you?"

Svane said grimly.

A sudden, sharp spike of terror flared in the back of Ray's mind. Through the subtle, emotional tether of the Understudy Protocol’s resonant link, Ray physically felt Rina's anxiety skyrocketing. She had just started to feel the relief of being cleared of murder, only to immediately spiral into silent panic at the thought of Ray being hunted by a legendary assassin.

Ray shot Rina a reassuring glance before looking back at the Gold Aegis. He needed to logically dissect this theory, both to center the investigation and to calm his attendant.

"It's a sound theory, Svane, but it doesn't fit the profile. Based on what we learned from Rogal in Iron-Wake, 'K' enjoys the psychological process of the kill. She is theatrical. A quiet poisoning followed by a frantic, blunt-force skull fracture and a hastily severed tongue... it feels too brutish. Too desperate. It is a cover-up, not a masterpiece."

Ray argued smoothly as he crossed his arms.

"Bastian Sterling remains my primary suspect. The Argent Hand is a terrifying variable, but I believe they are involved in this."

"Even if it is Bastian, we are running out of time. You have less than two hours. But at the very least, you accomplished your primary goal. Rina is no longer the prime suspect."

Svane pointed out, gesturing to the grandfather clock ticking softly in the corner of the room.

Ray shook his head stubbornly.

"Two hours is still a lot of time. I am not giving up."

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

A heavy silence fell over the sitting room. Ray closed his eyes, plunging his awareness into the Ambient Presence.

The internal committee was already rapidly cycling through the mountains of information, the suspect interviews, and the gruesome forensic details. The sheer volume of contradictory data was maddening.

Detective: "The timeline shift breaks our entire working theory. If Hannah died six hours ago, Bastian Sterling's alibi during that specific window is practically ironclad. The only way that he could have killed Hannah is if he was already in the manor before the gala started and we do not have any proof of that."

Commander: "Bastian didn't kill Hannah, 'K' did. I don't think Bastian has the ability to shapeshift and even if he did, does he even have the acting chops to act as Hannah? The real question is why a legendary Argent Hand operative used poison to weaken the head butler? He clearly has the strength and skills to overpower an old man such as the head butler."

Scholar: "It is a massive contradiction. The Argent Hand operates on absolute efficiency. Surgically severing tongues is professional, but using poison on wine is theatrical which points to ‘K’s characteristic, but killing the maid is just inefficient, he can still copy Hannah without killing her. Why kill someone who does not know anything?"

Healer: "Perhaps 'K' is improvising? Using the existing drama to frame Bastian and create a chaotic smokescreen like what Svane said?"

Detective: "Assassins like 'K' do not improvise unless the primary objective goes wrong. We are missing the anchor. We are missing the actual motive on why the head butler needs to be murdered."

Conman: "Honestly, my prime suspect right now is Nick the gardener. The guy steals high-end wine. We should interrogate him and have a glass of that tasty stolen wine. "

The statement from the Charismatic Conman hit Ray like lightning.

Mr. Ramada was telling him that he knew Nick was the one stealing the wines, and he had proof.

He remembered the statement from the staffer who talked about Warren’s conversation with Nick the gardener.

Wait. The Conman is right. If we look at Warren's psychological profile. He was a meticulous and strict manager who demanded absolute perfection. If he says he has evidence of the theft then he probably has it.

Ray's golden eyes snapped open.

"We need to go back."

Ray announced, already moving toward the door.

Rina blinked, startled.

"Back where, young master?"

"To the wine cellar. I believe I might have missed something."

Ray said, pulling the door open.

They rushed back through the winding halls, the urgency in Ray using the Stoic Assassin’s Flowing Shadow Technique skill forced Svane to practically jog while Rina seeing Ray’s movement also used Flowing Shadow Technique to keep up.

When they arrived at the wine cellar, two heavily armored Academy guards were standing at attention.

Recognizing Ray's temporary jurisdiction, the guards offered crisp salutes.

"Has the scene been processed yet?"

Ray asked, his voice clipped.

"No, my Lord. Master Alvon requested a specialized forensic team, but given the late hour, they likely won't arrive until dawn. The room is exactly as you left it."

One of the guards replied respectfully..

"Good."

Ray said. He reached for the iron handle of the door, then stopped. He turned to Rina.

His rigid, commanding posture softened for a fraction of a second.

"Stay out here with Svane."

Ray told her gently.

Rina looked at the heavy door, her hands trembling slightly at the memory of the blood. She looked back at Ray, deeply touched by his unwavering protection.

"Yes, My Lord. I will wait here."

Ray pushed the heavy door open and stepped alone into the freezing, metallic-smelling gloom of the cellar. The air was thick with the scent of aged oak and coagulated blood.

He walked slowly down the aisle of massive wine casks, stopping just short of Warren Ramada's mutilated body.

Ray crouched down. He ignored the shattered skull. He ignored the horrific, bloody mouth. Instead, his eyes locked entirely onto the butler's outstretched right arm. Warren's bloodstained fingers were curled rigidly, reaching toward the base of the massive oak cask on the right.

Ray looked at the tiny, shattered fragment of the alchemical vial wedged perfectly in the crack between the stone floor and the cask.

Detective: "Look at the direction the body is pointing at, kid. If we really trace the trajectory of the arm relative to the position of the glass…"

Ray leaned in close, his eyes narrowing.

The vial fragment was wedged tightly into the corner... but Warren's index finger wasn't pointing directly at it. The angle is slightly off. Although It is only a matter of mere inches but to a man using his absolute final ounce of dying strength to leave a message, inches mattered.

Ray thought as he looked closely at what Warren was pointing at.

The vial was a red herring. It was a piece of incidental trash dropped by the killer during the struggle.

Warren wasn't pointing at the glass. He was pointing past it.

He was pointing directly at the solid, unremarkable stone wall behind the heavy cask.

Ray needed to see beneath the surface. He took a deep, steadying breath, pushing his mental bandwidth to its absolute, agonizing limits.

He initiated Tri-Concurrent Partial Immersion.

Ray stacked the ocular abilities of three distinct archetypes, forcing them to harmonize: The Gritty Detective's 'Observation' skill, The Serene Cultivator's 'Aetheric Perception' skill, and the Arcane Scribe's 'Runic Sight' skill.

Ray's physical eyes underwent a terrifying, mesmerizing transformation. His pupils dilated violently. The golden flecks in his irises began to spin like miniature galaxies, while faint, glowing geometric rings of raw magical data formed around the outer edges of his sclera.

The dim wine cellar peeled back in layers.

The Gritty Detective’s observations stripped away the shadows, highlighting microscopic fine details and inconsistencies in the mortar. The Serene Cultivator’s perception illuminated the room, revealing the faint, lingering flow of ambient energy. And finally, the Arcane Scribe’s runic sight pierced the physical veil entirely, searching for the underlying structure and energy flow of hidden magic.

Ray stared at the blank expanse of the stone wall and he let out a slow, quiet breath. The corners of his mouth curved upward into a cold, knowing smile.

He had found ‘the proof.’
