Chapter 315: The Symphony of Combat

Dylan, Francesca, and Krystle Starr moved with practiced synchronization.

Dylan drew his ironwood Echo-Tonfas, twirling them with a lethal, rhythmic hum. Francesca unslung her Arcane-Lute, her fingers resting aggressively over the glowing strings. And little Krystle simply dropped her center of gravity, her surprisingly hyper-dense muscles tensing as she planted her feet into the marble.

Bastian had made a fatal miscalculation. He had chosen to run in a house belonging to the College of Arcanum's premier Acoustic Mages.

Dylan didn't even bother looking at the empty air Ray was pointing at. He just tapped his tonfas together, feeling the sub-audible vibrations bounce off the moving, invisible mass.

"I don't need to see a target…If I can hear their heartbeat."

Dylan said, his tonfas beginning to crackle with violent sonic energy.

Using his ironwood Echo-Tonfas as a spell focus, he tapped a rapid, double-time beat against his own thighs.

He cast the 1st-Circle spell: Sonic Step.

In a blur of unnatural, magically accelerated speed, Dylan crossed thirty feet of marble floor in a fraction of a second. He didn't aim for a visible body; he aimed for the frantic, thudding rhythm of Bastian’s panicked heart. Dylan swung his tonfa in a wide, punishing arc through the empty air.

CRACK!

A concussive shockwave erupted upon impact. A pained shout echoed through the ballroom as the kinetic force slammed into Bastian's chest, violently breaking his concentration. His Invisibility began to unravel, snapping the aristocratic alchemist back into view as he tumbled across the floor.

Bastian scrambled to his feet. He spat blood onto the marble, his pristine noble facade entirely replaced by the cold, calculating eyes of a cornered saboteur. Realizing he was outmatched in pure close combat. He bit down hard on a hidden capsule nestled in his collar, a micro-dose of highly toxic elixir. His veins darkened instantly as the alchemical concoction flooded his system, completely numbing his pain receptors and supercharging his reflexes.

Watching from the side, Ray’s eyes narrowed. In the Ambient Presence of his mind, the World-Weary Healer spoke up, a grim tone of recognition in his voice.

Healer: "He is using the exact same principles I used against you in the Tactical Replication Protocol. Chemical augmentation, spacing, and pre-brewed catalysts instead of raw mana weaving. He’s not fighting like a traditional mage. He’s fighting like a combat alchemist."

He unclipped a dense, foot-long iron rod from his belt. His thumb found a hidden mechanical catch, and with a sharp, metallic SLINK, the metal violently extended outward in both directions, locking securely revealing an ironwood quarterstaff with a cupped metallic cradle at the top.

As Dylan rushed him again to maintain his tempo, Bastian casually dropped a handful of wax pouches behind him as he backpedaled. The Tangle-Foot Resin burst upon hitting the floor, creating a fast-drying, highly adhesive barrier to control the space.

Whipping his ironwood quarterstaff forward like a spear, Bastian used the metallic cradle at the tip to launch two vials of Corrosive Splash at bullet-like speeds toward Francesca and Krystle, the dark green acid hissing as it tore through the air.

"Not in our house!"

Francesca yelled. She stepped forward, using her Arcane-Lute as a spell focus, her fingers aggressively striking the string as it started glowing.

She cast the cantrip spell: Power Chord.

A bolt of concentrated, battering-ram sound pressure blasted across the room, catching the acid vials in mid-air and safely shattering them away from the siblings.

But Bastian had anticipated the interception. The moment the acid vials shattered, he snapped a Flash-Bang Ampoule against his staff. A blinding, localized flash of magnesium-white light erupted, blinding Dylan mid-stride.

With the frontline striker momentarily blinded, Bastian hurled a vial of Frictionless Oil directly into Dylan's path. The acoustic battle mage’s foot hit the hyper-slick grease, sending him sliding dangerously out of control toward the heavy stone pillars.

Francesca quickly shifted her rhythm, seamlessly transitioning from aggressive chords to an uplifting, adrenaline-pumping melody.

She cast the 1st-Circle spell: Heroism.

A temporary, glowing magical shield washed over Dylan just as he crashed into the pillar, absorbing the blunt force of the impact and immediately steadying his nerves.

Seeing her brother take a hit, Krystle narrowed her eyes. She channeled her mana down to her foot and stomped violently onto the marble.

She cast the 1st-Circle spell: Earth Tremor.

A massive kinetic shockwave ripped through the floorboards. The acoustic tremor shattered Bastian's resin barrier and knocked the alchemist entirely off balance.

Ray watched the flawless exchange with genuine awe. This was his second time witnessing Acoustic mages in battle, and the sheer fluidity of their casting was staggering.

Commander: "Look at their synergy. They don't even need to shout orders. Every chord Francesca plays is a tactical adjustment. Every beat Dylan taps is a strike. They are covering each other's blind spots instinctively."

Weaver: "I must admit I had my bias against them. I assumed that they were just mere performers. I was completely wrong. They are a highly capable, lethal combat unit."

Dylan shook off the blindness, his momentum returning. He coated his tonfas in dense mana.

He cast the cantrip spell: Percussive Strike

He expertly rushed through the ruined floorboards, closing the distance on the stumbling alchemist.

Out of tactical options and rapidly losing ground, Bastian cursed. He reached into his bandolier again and pulled out his heavy artillery: a reinforced iron-and-glass Dragon's Breath Canister. He hurled the canister directly into the center of the Starr formation.

Krystle simply smiled sweetly. She stepped in front of her siblings, brought her hands back, and clapped them together with monstrous physical strength.

She cast the cantrip spell: Thunderclap.

The devastating sonic boom collided with the canister in mid-air. The sheer force of the Thunderclap blew the roaring, 20-foot radius of chemical fire entirely backward.

The flames washed over Bastian. His bandolier wasn't just something that holds his potions and vials, it was a specialized leather harness enchanted with magic to absorb shock. It was able to absorb the worst of the blast, but the sheer force threw him violently backward, battering him against the heavy oak doors.

Cornered, bleeding, his robes singed, and seconds away from being beaten by the siblings, Bastian let out a desperate, feral scream. He reached into his deepest pocket and pulled out his ultimate masterpiece, it looked like a bubbling, highly unstable elixir.

Instead of throwing it, he crushed the glass directly over his own face.

The elixir immediately took effect and it caused a horrific transformation in Bastian. The sickening crunch of expanding bone echoed over the music of battle. Bastian’s aristocratic features melted away. His eyes fused shut beneath a thick plate of reptilian scales. His spine hunched, growing massive and corded with muscle, but the most terrifying change was his head. His skull elongated into a massive, hollow, tubular crown.

Bastian had transformed into an abomination that looked like it was bred in the deep dark specifically to hunt sound-mages.

Master Alvon’s hand instantly dropped to the hilt of his broadsword. The Head of Security stepped forward, his tactical assessment of the situation shifting rapidly from a student scuffle to a highly lethal threat.

"Headmaster, the situation has escalated. That is a Destrachan, a dangerous monster. We need to step in before the siblings are hurt or worse killed."

Master Alvon warned, his plate mail clinking as he prepared to draw his blade.

"Hold your position, Alvon."

Headmaster Andrade commanded softly, raising a single hand to block his path. Her eyes remained locked on the battlefield, her expression entirely unreadable.

"Give them a moment, let us see how they handle it."

She said coolly.

Internally, Andrade’s pragmatic mind was already calculating.

The complete roster for the Azure Cup is still being finalized. Let's see If the Starr siblings can adapt to this situation. Show me what you are truly made of.

"Dylan, back away!"

Francesca screamed, recognizing the unnatural shift in the air.

But Dylan was already locked into his rhythm. He crossed his tonfas above his head and slammed them violently into the beast's chest, intending to unleash the 2nd-Circle spell: Shatter, that could cause a devastating internal sound explosion.

The tonfas struck flesh, but there was no shockwave. The beast's massive, tubular skull simply glowed with a sickly purple light, perfectly absorbing the kinetic and sonic energy of the blow. Dylan's ultimate strike did absolutely zero damage.

The eyeless horror reared back, its tubular resonance chambers swelling with the absorbed energy. It inhaled and unleashed a terrifying harmonic frequency.

It was a screech of pure, destructive vibration.

The sound bypassed Dylan completely and hit the two sisters. The amplifying crystal built into the chassis of Francesca's Arcane-Lute vibrated violently for a split second before shattering into a cloud of glittering dust. Across the room, Krystle's Lumin-Clavier cracked down the middle, the magical pathways sparking out and dying.

Both sisters cried out, dropping to their knees and clutching their bleeding ears. They were instantly disarmed and temporarily disabled.

Standing at the side, Ray heard the conversation between Headmaster Andrade and Master Alvon as the situation escalated.
