Chapter 317: Clearing the Ledger
Ray turned to face the Headmaster. He stood straight and offered a respectful bow.
"Headmaster Andrade. I apologize for breaking formation and making a move without your explicit order. I believed the situation had escalated beyond the acceptable threshold."
Andrade looked at Ray, her sharp eyes studying him for a long moment. Then, the corner of her mouth twitched upward into a faint, approving smirk.
"Do not apologize for possessing sound tactical judgment, Novice Croft. My intention was to test their limits, not to see them slaughtered. Your read of the situation was entirely accurate."
She paused, stepping slightly closer so her voice dropped to a volume only he could hear.
"And your execution was... illuminating. To bypass my perception, even for a fraction of a second, is no small feat."
"Thank you, Headmaster,"
Ray replied neutrally.
"Lord Croft."
Ray turned to see Lady Jane standing up, supported by Dylan and Francesca. The matriarch of House Starr looked exhausted, yet there was a depth of gratitude in her tear-stained eyes. She didn't offer a standard noble's nod; she executed a deep, formal curtsy, a sign of deep gratitude she had for what Ray did.
"You have saved my children's lives tonight, and beyond that, you have salvaged the honor of House Starr. You defied the Academy Security Department and took responsibility for Warren’s murder. Found the true monster who was responsible for it. We owe you a debt that gold cannot repay."
Lady Jane said, her voice thick with emotion.
Dylan nodded, stepping forward despite his battered ribs. He extended a hand.
"I misjudged you earlier, Ray. You're not just some eccentric scholar. You're a damn monster yourself. Thank you."
Ray took Dylan's hand, giving it a firm shake.
"You fought well, senior Dylan. All of you did. But there is no debt to repay, Lady Jane. I was merely fulfilling my primary objective."
"And what was that?"
Francesca asked, wiping a smear of soot from her cheek.
"Clearing my attendant's name."
Ray stated simply.
As if summoned by the mention, heavy footsteps approached from behind. Svane, the towering Gold Aegis, walked up with Rina trailing closely beside him. The giant warrior looked at the cratered floor, then at Ray. Svane didn't say a single word, but he slowly brought his right fist to his chest in a silent salute of absolute warrior's respect.
Ray nodded in return.
Rina, however, was struggling to maintain her composure. The young maid's hands were shaking violently. Just hours ago, she had lost a friend and was made to be a prime suspect for the murder of that friend. She had thought her life was over.
"Young master… I... I do not have the words. When the Academy Guards made me out to be the prime suspect for Warren’s murder, I was so terrified. I thought everyone would simply accept it because I was just a servant. But you... you stood against all of them for me."
Rina said, her voice quivering. She bowed deeply, her forehead almost touching her knees.
"You are not only my attendant, Rina. You are my friend, I know your character. I knew you were innocent. I wasn't going to let them take you away for a crime you didn't commit."
Ray said gently, completely dropping the cold, clinical persona that he usually shows.
Rina stood up, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes and streaming down her cheeks. She tried to wipe them away, to remain the dutiful, distant attendant, but the wave of relief and gratitude was too much. Breaking every rule of noble-servant protocol, she lunged forward and threw her arms around Ray, burying her face in his shoulder as she broke down into quiet, relieved sobs.
Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.
Ray stiffened for a fraction of a second, completely caught off guard by the sudden display of physical affection. But as he felt her trembling against him, his posture softened. He slowly raised a hand and gently patted her back.
"It's over, Rina. You're safe now."
Ray said quietly, letting her cry.
He allowed Rina to cry on his shoulder and after a while he gave her a few moments to compose herself then she stepped back.
Ray turned his gaze back to the Headmaster, who was issuing quiet directives to Sergeant Thomas.
"Headmaster Andrade, before I depart the premises, might I have a word with you in private?"
Ray called out, his voice steady.
Andrade paused, her sharp eyes flicking from the ruined floor up to the Novice. She gave a slow, measured nod.
"Follow me, Novice Croft."
The iron gates of the Starr Manor loomed in the cool night air. Standing beside a waiting carriage, Svane crossed his massive arms beside him, Rina stood wrapped in a thick shawl, her eyes red but her posture finally relaxed.
The heavy front doors of the manor opened, and Ray stepped out into artificial morning sun, adjusting his coat.
"Is your business with the Headmaster concluded, my Lord?"
Svane asked, his deep voice rumbling.
"It is, Captain."
Ray confirmed, stepping up to the carriage. He glanced back at the towering estate one last time before pulling the carriage door open.
"Let's go home."
One Week Later, Ray was in his suite in the Spire of Sages sitting cross-legged position meditating.
System. Initiate Understudy Protocol’s Theater of the Mind and establish resonant link with Understudy 3: Kaelen Thorne.
Ray mentally commanded.
The world dissolved into a wireframe grid of pulsing blue Aether, rapidly constructing the cold, sterile architecture of a sparring arena.
A while later Inside the localized mental construct, steel clashed against steel.
Ray parried a blindingly fast dagger strike, sidestepping smoothly as Kaelen’s momentum carried her forward. She spun, using the momentum to launch a sweeping kick at his ribs. Ray caught her ankle, pushing her back to create space.
"You're distracted, Kaelen."
Ray said, his voice echoing slightly in the simulated arena.
Kaelen sighed, lowering her training daggers. Even in the mental construct, her frustration was palpable.
"I'm just frustrated, Ray. After our conversation on the balcony that night, I left the gala and headed straight back to the dorms. If I had known a murder was going to take place, I would have stayed at the party. I could have helped you."
"It is fine, Kaelen, the situation was handled. Frankly, I am glad you were safely away from the manor. An invisible combat alchemist throwing thermite and acid concoction is not exactly an ideal party guest."
Ray said, dropping his own guard.
Kaelen offered a wry, apologetic smile.
"Still. I owe you one. Speaking of owing favors... you mentioned that you spoke with Headmaster Andrade before you left the manor. Did you ask her?"
She twirled her dagger, looking at him expectantly.
Ray nodded, though he could already feel the heavy cognitive strain of maintaining the shared simulation pressing against his temples.
"I did. The Headmaster sent me a message this morning. She has officially approved the request. You are being attached to the Northern Raid Unit under the official designation of 'Asset Assessor.' Your primary directive is to identify, secure, and decode any encrypted ledgers tied to the Argent Hand during the raids."
Ray confirmed.
"She actually said yes? Ray, thank you. Thank you for indulging this selfish request."
Kaelen said as her eyes lit up. The frustration instantly melted away, replaced by a fierce, determined fire.
"Be careful, Kaelen, you already know and experience first hand how dangerous the Argent Hand are. They are ruthless, and highly organized. I hope I will not regret asking this favor with the headmaster."
Ray warned, his tone growing serious.
"I will be careful. I swear it. I'm going to tear their network apart and also search for my father."
Kaelen promised, her grip tightening on her daggers.
"See that you do, and I wish you good luck in the search for your father. Now, again. Defend your left flank."
Ray said as he lunged forward. As their blades clashed, they continued with their spar.
After some time. Ray snapped his eyes open in his real-world bed, gasping slightly. A dull, throbbing ache pulsed behind his eyes, the severe mental fatigue and Aether depletion that came with hosting another consciousness. He sat up, rubbing his temples.
Reaching over to his bedside table, he tore open a small, wax-sealed packet of dense food ration bars that Rina had prepared for him. He took a heavy bite. As he chewed, he glanced at the small clock sitting on his nightstand, noting the time elapsed.
Three hours, with my current capacity, I can maintain 'Theater of the Mind' for exactly three hours before my Aether reserves hit the critical twenty-percent threshold.
Ray thought and calculated silently.
While in thought the Crimson Weaver's passive skill, ‘Neural Gastronomy,’ kicked in. A soothing, cooling sensation washed over his overtaxed mind as the passive skill rapidly converted the nutrient-dense food into cognitive relief, sweeping away the brain fog and restoring his mental stamina.
With his headache receding, Ray shifted his legs, settling back into a grounded, meditative posture on his mattress. He closed his eyes, preparing to cycle his core using the Ashvane Method to manually replenish his low Aether reserves. But just as he guided his breathing into the first rhythmic cycle of the technique, a sudden, insistent warmth bloomed against his chest, breaking his concentration.
Beneath his shirt, the Custodian Crest was vibrating.
