# Traps (4), Camp Roberts

Winter is tired of looking at the catch.

Trickster remained calm. He was lying dead the whole time his hands and feet were tied. The only proof of life is breath. Shhh, shh. The sound of the wind coming and going.

No matter how bad you get, you'll still have the strength to act. Suspicious. It seems to be caught on purpose, but it gains more weight. I just can't confirm it.

It emitted a powerful interference before it was defeated.

The same thing happened to the man I met in Atascadero. When it died, there was a lot of noise coming out of the radio.

What if it wasn't just radio interference, it was some kind of communication between these things?

And what's the limit of that communication? ’

Voice language and radio communication are qualitatively different. The ability to communicate information between these new specialized variants may be at a level that encompasses vision and hearing.

Then I understand their cunning. Every time I meet a new individual, I get to experience it. The information released by Trickster to Atascadero should still be floating. Memories left after death. I feel like a ghost.

‘I see. He smiled at me because he knew my face……. ’

You probably already know that the United States is heating up a living sample. Otherwise, you wouldn't have the idea of being caught on purpose without being convinced that you're not going to die.

Given that this guess is correct, Trickster is the worst variant.

My nerves cooled down. After the twenty-six apocalypse, it's been a long time since I felt this way. Not bad. The first time I smashed a human-like head, I felt like I could immerse myself in it.

Winter now aims at the rifle. Feel the trigger pressure with your fingertips, and think. Whatever his plan is, if I shoot him now, it's going to get ugly.

“What are you doing, Lieutenant? ”

Sergeant Liverman grabs hold of the winter rifle.

“You tried so hard and now you want to come and kill me? ”

He looked hard to understand. With a slight glance, the soldiers watching the perimeter of the capture are stumbling a few steps away. Perhaps the winter air was strange enough to summon Sergeant Liverman. Maybe it's because of the "threat" that must have been activated.

Winter gives you an answer, dropping your gun.

“I'm feeling a little anxious. ”

“Why, did you catch it so easily? ”

The sergeant had the same doubt. But it wouldn't have dug deep enough for winter. Of course, I want to relieve winter with a non-bulky fight.

“I've got a few loose ends... but it's over. The helicopter will be here in a moment, and we can go back and have a beer and stretch it out. ”

Then he gestures to the outside.

“You look tired, but you should go out and rest for a while. It's so nice to see the night sky without clouds. Leave this to the kids. ”

Winter made me smile lightly.

“I don't hate you. ”

Then Sergeant Livermann nods, "Yes, that's right," and the soldiers give a puffy look. After a while everyone is smiling.

Winter accepted the offer. Without confirmation, it will be difficult to convince them. I would say empathy, but implementation was a separate issue. What can a specialty variant that has been captured and tightened do?

Moreover, Jeffrey would have already reported the capture. If you dispose of it willingly, you may be disciplined.

The boy decided to forget something else for a while. As Sergeant Livermann said, it was cloudless and starry sky. I sat down on the Humvee and looked at it quietly. It didn't take a piece of the moon, but I don't think it's dark. On a cold night, the scattered starlight was very clean.

In the dark world after the Apocalypse, if there is anything brighter than before, it is the night sky. Here you can see a galaxy you've never seen in your life. It was like a strange glowing cloud.

It was even brighter when I used the night vision. How many stars are so clear.

Jeffrey was wrestling with his radio. He gets nervous for a moment, throws a few words around, and comes straight to winter. I don't talk right away. I don't want to disturb my relaxation. I felt respected.

After some time sitting side-by-side on Bonnet, Geoffrey opens his mouth.

“Does it look good? ”

“Yes. I'm sure I've seen it in my hometown, and it's a shame to see it here. ”

“Where you lived? Oh, Korea? ”

“In a sense. ”

“What does that mean? Meaning what?”

The young commander said he did not know English, but he did not explain winter. Instead, I asked him something else.

“What's going on? Are we off comms? I don't think there's any interference. ”

The receiver in your ear is still silent. It is a proof that Trickster is still.

“It's not like that.... He said he couldn't send a helicopter. ”

“Why?”

“It's not just our camp that's going through this. He caught a few of them somewhere else. So I got a lot of requests from helicopters, but I sent them over, and in a few moments, eight of them disappeared. ”

The vigilance rises. Winter asks again in a calm tone.

“What attack? ”

“I don't know. I'm not even sure if it's an attack. I just lost contact. One of the units who called for backup heard the explosion. I think he crashed, but he said he hasn't reached the scene yet. In short, we have no idea what's causing this at the moment. ”

“Attack. Not one or two, eight of them can fail at the same time. without a lot of contact. ”

“Well, I guess so. Anyway, it's hard to find the cause or get an extra chopper in the morning. ”

“Well, what about that? ”

Winter points to the direction of the capture. But the soldiers were transporting the captives. The muzzle is firmly tied around your mouth, and four are holding it carefully. A few people stand a little distance away and point their guns at each other. Jeffrey said.

“I'm ordering transport to base. If you keep it, I'll take it. ”

“Do you have a detention plan? ”

“We decided to put him in a cage in chains. ”

“Bird cage?”

“I don't know, putting cooking foil on the walls and ceilings? They say it'll stop this thing from spreading. We have to do that to get it to the base. ”

Ah, Faraday's cage. I've heard of winter. But is that enough?

It was said that the helicopter would come when it was sunny. One way or another, if we make it through the night, nothing will happen. In other words, something seemed to happen before sunrise.

Should I ask the commander? ’

After all, the young officer's line manager is the commander. Or we could stab the chief of operations. But they were both unlikely. The commander is a waste human who is passionate about forgetting reality with alcohol and will not want to be disturbed by rest time. The chief of operations would agree to strengthen the perimeter with speculation without evidence.

But it's my job to do it first.

“Hey, get in. Let's go back.”

Geoffrey taps the shoulder of winter.

Vehicle procession has departed. Trickster was tied horizontally behind the Turret of Vehicle 3. The car looks unsettled due to its increased center of gravity. The heavy machine gun shooter had the gun locked in a mutant direction at all times. He always said he'd shoot if I misbehaved.

At the base, the reinforced outpost troops were waiting for Jeffrey's platoon. The variant is already bound, but is bound once more in chains, as if waiting. You wear insulated gloves, but do not slow down your guard from start to finish.

In the meantime, the radio noise intensified a few more times.

If the purpose of the variant was reconnaissance, then at the point of entry into the base and emission of noise, it was already somewhat achieved.

Winter saw that a special breed was finally trapped in the cage, then headed to the camp control room. The Chief of Operations was on call, whether the issue was an issue.

Saluted, he asks what brings you here.

“What's going on? You've done a great job on the mission, so you should probably get some rest. ”

“I have a proposal for this mission. ”

“A case?”

“Yes. Why don't you strengthen the camp's perimeter as much as possible until daylight...?" ”

The chief of operations is more emulsifying to the winter than the chief of staff. It's not a human bond, it's a respect for abilities.

The unfortunate HQ soldiers on duty on Christmas Eve watched Winter and the chief of operations. The chief scratched his chin and fixed his posture toward the boy officer.

“Let's hear why. ”

“I think Trickster deliberately infiltrated. ”

“Oh.”

A guess as winter unfolds. The chief of operations listened interestingly.

“That's a little further than the report you submitted earlier. The interference and comms may be indistinguishable. Well, actually, I'm keeping that possibility in mind up there. Maybe they're planning an ECM and a reaction soon. ”

“Are you saying we're trying to disrupt the transmission from here? ”

“That's right. If it's really some kind of communication, something will react when it's interrupted. There's a good chance your mission will be compromised. Anyways, no one on the west side of the blockade has more priors than you. ”

“I see.”

“We also fly scouts from time to time in the 390th Fleet. I'm trying to analyze the patterns of their transmissions. I can't say there's no basis for your concern in this situation. Tonight, other camps have experienced similar events simultaneously. Yeah, that's very suspicious. ”

“So you'll let me? ”

“No.”

Major shakes his head with a smile.

“It makes sense, but it's too much. What can a man in a cage do? Even if he had a plan to infiltrate, would he have imagined a containment facility blocking radio waves? We don't know them, but they don't know us. No matter how smart they got, they couldn't outshine human wisdom. ”

Then he smiles, adding a joke.

“If they start a library and a school and start teaching academics, it might be dangerous. ”

“But……. ”

“There you go. You're overreacting. That's an order. Get some rest. It's Christmas.”

Major shakes his hand to say, "Get out." The look on my face didn't seem to work even if I tried anymore. Winter retreated to pay homage.

So what do we do now?

There was still a sense of danger. I couldn't ignore this.

The only way left is to ignore the command and move the soldiers directly. There are people who will respond to you if you ask them nicely.

But it's a burden. because it is a practical defense. If you take responsibility as the main character, your winter position will be at great risk. There's a pile of stuff, so it won't collapse anytime soon.

The more people we bring in, the more problematic it will be. Eventually, there will be no convincing, and someone to report to command.

Most of all, it's an uncertain possibility. I doubt it's worth it. Given the after-storm if not, there may be more thread than profit.

Investment in Survival Sense was also considered. This warns of all possibilities leading to death. However, because the scope is so wide, it is often ambiguous without interworking.

I haven't used the resources since Ataskadero, so I can afford it. The insights provided when the sense of survival reached the realm of genius will be more specific and accurate than ever.

I made up my mind and pushed the EXP.

The warning of Grade 11 Survival senses rises faintly.

But that was it. Prejudices from system calibration can sometimes be wrong. After all, it was not what winter expected.

Perhaps "crisis detection" would have been better. You wouldn't know it without trying.

After much thought, Winter went to see Captain Capston.

The captain nods, listening to the situation before and after.

“Fair enough. I compared the combat data from Ataskadero to other places, and the Trickster was really good. It's too easy to get caught like you said. Being alone is strangely sloppy. I care that you smiled. There's nothing wrong with being careful. It's still very difficult.... ”

“I thought about it, but we don't want to get caught. ”

As winter spoke, the captain questioned.

“Could it be? ”

“Think about it. Even if you deploy troops, it's an emergency standby." You don't have to really move unless something goes wrong. If the incident actually happened.... ”

“Then you have to worry about something bigger than a trivial penalty. I know what you mean. ”

Captain Capston smiles lightly.
