Selene’s POV

"I urge you all, in these tough times, to stand by us and by each other. It will not be for long. Thank you for your understanding."

My speech, over an hour long, was finally done. It was heartfelt, and I wanted my people to know exactly where I was coming from: a place of pain and agony. Every chance I had ever been given, I had used it to do good, but some people wouldn’t let me. So it was time to retaliate.

I wasn’t losing my guard, and I wasn’t looking back. The ones who had attacked us weren’t looking back, so why should I? They were probably planning another strike, since they had failed to get to me and my husband.

They could never match us. Human or not, it made no difference.

The latest update on the attackers couldn’t be shared with the masses. They would panic, and fear would do them no good.

The history between wolves and humans had never been good. We had never had a decent relationship, and I had honestly believed we’d moved past the war, that both sides had learned to stay in their own lane. Now they wanted the wolves. It was sad, and it was stupid.

I stepped down from the platform and felt a small rush of relief. Construction and repairs had already begun on the damaged districts. The funds were there, and nothing was stopping us.

I went straight back to the room where the rogue wolves were being tracked.

"What’s the current news? Talk to me," I said to the operator.

"Luna, first of all, May is human," he said. "She’s their boss’s personal assistant and secretary, but she has combat skills, which is why she followed them. As for Lucas, he was found near Valdris, not inside it. The borders, I’m almost sure."

I stroked my chin. What I was considering was drastic, but it was worth it. The safety of my people demanded it.

"Get six soldiers to go with me," I told Damien. "We’re going to see Lucas right now."

"Luna, isn’t it too dangerous for you to go on a mission like this? Please, let us just send the soldiers." He was looking after me, or trying to, but I wasn’t a baby who needed babysitting.

"I’m going. I need to do this myself. Now get them, quickly."

Damien shot off like a horse to carry out the order.

William wouldn’t be happy about this. He would rather burn in hell than let me go on a mission this dangerous. But his queen had a heart for her people, and that was what drove everything I did.

He was still unconscious, so he couldn’t stop me.

Still, I went to see him first.

"Hey, William." I knew he could hear me. He just couldn’t move his mouth or open his eyes yet.

"I’m going out. I want to find the root of the attack on our territory, and I finally have the chance. See you later, husband."

I kissed his forehead and turned to leave.

His hand twitched.

I’d half expected it to catch mine and tell me not to go. He didn’t disappoint me. It was proof that he would recover, and I was so happy I almost cried.

I left him there and set out on my pilgrimage.

"Is the car ready?" I asked Damien, and he confirmed it was.

"Come. You’re riding with me."

He changed his attire and climbed in. I wore a runway suit, sleek and easy to move in.

We hit the road.

Two cars, nine of us in total. I rode in the first with the driver and Damien, and the six soldiers followed in the second.

It was a long drive, but we made it to the Valdris border, between Bernia and Valdris, in the dead of night. We had the coordinates already. Lucas was holed up in a run-down motel.

We arrived and burst his door open without even knocking. All nine of us stormed in, and he was in the middle of his fucking dinner.

"What the hell? Who are you people? Can’t you knock?"

He was afraid. I could smell it on him. His room glowed with blue light and was extremely small.

"We can make this fast and easy, Mr. Lucas," I said. "We want to know how to reach your friends, your people. The Seven."

My guards stood armed with guns and all manner of weapons. He saw them, and of course he was terrified. He sat down heavily on his bed, gasping.

"If you’d asked me this months or years ago, I could’ve helped you. Not anymore. That’s a season of my life that has passed."

"I don’t care if it’s passed. I need information. You have what we need, and you know what your friends did. Those things can’t go unpunished and you know it, male, female alike died all because they wanted to have a good time, it’s my responsibility to fix it for them"

"What they did? I don’t know. I left before they could do anything."

He didn’t look like he was lying.

"Your friends came to blow up Icefang in Morvaine while we were celebrating our festival," I said coldly. "They killed an alpha and a Luna. They killed many people. I would have died too, if my husband hadn’t saved me."

He dropped to his knees. "Are you the Luna of Icefang? Please, forgive me. I’ve been off the grid ever since the Bernia government ordered us to start killing and wiping people out."

"Get up, Lucas. We need everything you know from your time with them. We’re going to make them pay for what they’ve done."

"The truth is, I left because they didn’t make me the leader of the group," he admitted. "But I never supported what they did. I’m so sorry for your loss."

"You can only help us by coming with us to Icefang. And I’m not begging."

He was on his feet in a heartbeat. "Yes, Luna."
