Chapter 941. Debt That Needs To Be Pay With Her Own... (She Tries To Act Cool About It)
The moon hung like a pale, judging eye over the estate, casting long, skeletal shadows across the stone corridors. Inside the guest wing, the air was thick not with the chill of the night but with a charged, almost suffocating tension that made the very oxygen feel heavy.
Iris stood in the center of the dimly lit room. She had shed her training leathers for something lighter, something that left her feeling exposed despite the dimness.
She stood with her arms crossed tight beneath her chest, a defensive posture that felt increasingly inadequate against the storm brewing outside the door. Her heart hammered against her ribs, not with fear, but with a strange, predatory curiosity that she found both terrifying and exhilarating.
She had heard the whispers. She had seen the way other women looked at Rex, the way Diana, usually so composed and regal, seemed to transform when the doors were closed.
There were rumors of Diana’s voice breaking into something primal, something loud and uninhibited, echoing through the walls when Rex had his way with her. Iris had always wondered how someone so disciplined could be so utterly ruined.
Now, as she heard the heavy click of the door behind him, she realized she was about to understand.
The door didn’t just close; it sealed. Rex turned the lock with a slow, deliberate twist that sounded like a guillotine blade dropping.
He didn’t move toward her immediately. Instead, he leaned back against the heavy oak door, his frame filling the doorway, casting a shadow that seemed to stretch across the entire floor until it touched her boots.
The moonlight caught the sharp angles of his face, highlighting the predatory stillness in his eyes.
"You asked what I wanted, Iris," Rex said, his voice dropping into a register that was pure velvet and gravel. "You asked me to be plain..."
"And you also asked me to stop playing games."
He began to walk toward her. Each footfall was measured, each step an assertion of dominance.
He didn’t approach her like a suitor; he approached her like a conqueror assessing newly claimed territory.
"I don’t want gratitude," he said, stopping just inches from her, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating off his body. "And I certainly don’t want your repayment in coin or favors."
A slow, dark smile spread across his lips, a smile that lacked any trace of the honorable commander she had seen in the training hall. This was the man beneath the uniform, the one who took what he desired without apology, without hesitation, and without remorse.
"I want the truth of you," he taunted, his breath warm against her temple as he leaned down, whispering close enough to make her skin prickle. "I want to see what’s left of Iris when you stop pretending to be a soldier."
"I want to hear those sounds Diana makes, the ones she thinks she’s hiding..."
"I want to see you break, Iris..."
"I want to see you come apart until there’s nothing left but the raw, screaming honesty of what you actually feel."
He let out a low, dark laugh, a sound that wasn’t cruel so much as it was utterly unapologetic. It was the laugh of a man who knew exactly how much power he held and exactly how much she wanted to surrender it.
"Well?" he challenged, his eyes burning into hers, challenging her resolve. "Are you going to stand there with your arms crossed like a child guarding a toy, or are you going to give me what I came for?"
Iris felt the heat of his breath against her temple like a brand, but internally, her mind was a fortress of ice.
’Fuckboy... The word flashed through her consciousness like a warning flare. ’Arrogant, manipulative, beautiful piece of shit...’
She knew exactly what he was. She wasn’t naive; she had seen the trail of shattered composure and flushed cheeks he left in his wake.
He was a predator who dressed his conquests in the language of ’honesty’ and ’connection,’ wrapping his voracious hunger in the guise of understanding. He had done it to Theo, breaking the boy’s spirit under the pretense of discipline.
He had done it to the others, dismantling their defenses until they were nothing more than extensions of his own will.
Her instinct screamed at her to push him away, to spit in his face, to reassert the distance between a commander and his subordinate. But she forced her muscles to remain still.
She knew the game. If she resisted with anger, he would read it as a challenge, and he would escalate until he broke her.
If she showed fear, he would feed on it. To oppose him directly now was to invite a different kind of manipulation, one where he would frame her resistance as weakness, using it as leverage to twist her loyalty.
’Survive,’ she told herself, her pulse thundering in her ears. ’Keep your composure...’
’Don’t let him see the cracks...’
’If you can’t beat him, you play his game until you find the opening to close it...’
"Is that what you think this is?" Iris asked aloud, her voice steadier than her racing heart.
She forced herself to meet his burning gaze, refusing to flinch. "A game of breaking things to see how they work?"
She slowly uncrossed her arms, letting them drop to her sides, a calculated surrender that mimicked vulnerability without actually yielding her control. "You talk about honesty as if it’s something you grant, Rex."
"As if you’re the only one who knows how to see through the masks."
Rex’s laugh rumbled deeper in his chest, a sound that vibrated through the small space between them. "Oh, I know you’re wearing a mask, Iris..."
"It’s a magnificent one. Stiff, disciplined, unshakeable."
"But we both know what’s underneath," Rex smirked. "We both know that beneath that steel armor, there’s a woman who is tired of holding everything together."
He reached out, one finger tracing the line of her jaw with agonizing slowness. His touch was electric, sending a traitorous shiver down her spine.
"Don’t pretend you don’t feel it," he whispered, his thumb pressing just slightly against the corner of her mouth. "The tension... The hunger... You didn’t come here tonight to talk about Veylor’s debts or training schedules."
"You came here because you wanted to see if I was as dangerous as they say."
Iris swallowed hard. Her inner monologue was a war zone: ’Don’t lean in...’
’Don’t let your eyes soften. Stay cold. Stay sharp.’
"Dangerous is a relative term, Rex," she countered, tilting her head just enough to make the contact more deliberate, playing into his expectations. "Some people are dangerous because they can destroy you."
"Others are dangerous because they make you want to be destroyed."
Her mind was cataloging every micro expression on his face, every shift in his stance. She was studying him like she studied a battlefield, looking for the moment his arrogance would become his blind spot.
She would give him the performance he wanted: the surrender, the heat, the surrender of the flesh, but she would guard the fortress of her mind with everything she had.
Rex’s grip tightened fractionally on her jaw, his eyes darkening until the pupils nearly swallowed the irises. The taunting grin vanished, replaced by something far more primal.
"Then let’s stop talking about what we are," he growled, his free hand sliding to the small of her back, crushing her against the hard plane of his body. "And let’s find out which one you are."
