Chapter 954. It Was Hella Funny When Iris Is Finally Being Honest Right In Front Of Me

The third evening arrived with a heavy, oppressive stillness that seemed to cling to the stone walls of the academy. The sky was bruised deep purples and sickly oranges bleeding into a charcoal horizon, casting long, distorted shadows across the archery yard.

Iris found him there, alone in the dying light.

Rex was a silhouette of controlled power. He sat on a low wooden bench, the muscles in his back rippling like corded rope beneath his sweat-stained shirt as he worked.

He was restringing his bow, his movements methodical and precise, possessing the same terrifying patience she usually reserved for the ritual of her own weapons.

The scrape of the string against the bow’s limbs was the only sound in the courtyard, sharp and rhythmic in the silence.

Iris froze at the entrance. Her heart performed a traitorous flutter against her ribs, a painful reminder of the shame that had festered in her gut since that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, she didn’t see targets or training drills; she saw the wet glisten of Diana’s skin, heard the obscene slap of flesh, and felt the phantom ache of a jealousy that had burned through her very soul.

She felt dirty, contaminated by the voyeurism she couldn’t stop replaying in her mind.

’Why can’t I stop thinking about it?’ she screamed at herself internally. ’Why does the memory of his violence feel like a promise?’

She forced her boots to move, each step echoing like a gunshot against the cobblestones. She couldn’t retreat.

Retreating would be admitting defeat to the hunger clawing at her insides.

"You have been quiet with me," Rex said.

His voice cut through her spiraling thoughts without him even lifting his gaze. It wasn’t an accusation; it was a statement of fact, delivered with the calm authority of someone who observed everything and missed nothing.

"Since the drills went badly... I noticed."

Iris stopped three paces behind him. The air between them felt charged, thick with unspoken tensions and the residual heat of the day.

"I have been distracted," she said, her voice steadier than she felt, though her pulse was hammering in her throat.

"By what?" Rex asked.

He finally looked up. His eyes weren’t cold; they were unnervingly perceptive, carrying that same focused intensity that had reduced Diana to a whimpering wreck.

There was no mockery in his tone, no performative cruelty, just a raw, genuine interest that felt more invasive than any physical touch. It was as if he were peeling back the layers of her composure, searching for the wound she was trying so desperately to hide.

Iris felt exposed. Under that gaze, the memory of her own climax, the muffled screams against her arm, the humiliating wetness between her thighs, felt like it was written across her face in crimson ink.

Her inner monologue became a panicked cacophony: ’Don’t look at me like that...’

’Don’t see how broken I am... Don’t see how much I want you to break me too.’

"Distraction is a weakness in our line of work," Rex continued, setting the bow aside and turning his full attention toward her.

The movement was slow and deliberate, like a predator shifting its weight before a strike. "And you, Iris, have never been weak."

"So tell me... what exactly is taking your mind off your aim?"

The twilight had deepened into a bruised indigo, the shadows stretching across the archery yard like grasping fingers. Iris stood frozen, the silence between them stretching until it felt taut enough to snap.

Her lungs burned, each breath feeling like she was inhaling glass. The dam she had built of three days of forced discipline, of icy detachment, of pretending she was untouched by the filth and fire she had witnessed was cracking.

She watched his hands. Those hands.

Hands that could string a bow with delicate precision yet had just hours ago been bruising Diana’s hips and pinning her to a mattress. The cognitive dissonance made her stomach churn with a nauseating mix of revulsion and desperate, aching need.

Something inside her finally surrendered. It wasn’t a conscious choice; it was the exhausted collapse of a soldier who had been holding up a crumbling fortress alone for too long, only to realize the foundation had already turned to ash.

"You," she said.

The word was quiet, almost swallowed by the wind, but in the stillness of the yard, it landed between them like a physical blow. "You are what I have been distracted by."

Rex didn’t flinch. He didn’t laugh.

He simply stilled, his fingers hovering over the bowstring, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying, unreadable intensity. The air pressure seemed to drop, leaving Iris feeling lightheaded.

"I watch you with Diana," Iris said.

Once the first crack appeared, the floodgates burst. The words tore out of her throat, raw and unvarnished, spilling forth before her mind could censor the shame.

"I watch how you look at her..."

"How you touch her without even thinking about it, as if it is the most natural thing in the world to want someone that plainly and that constantly."

"It feels as if she is the only thing that exists in your world when you are with her."

Her hands began to shake at her sides. She hated herself and she hated the way her voice trembled, betraying the vulnerability she had spent years killing off.

"I have spent days telling myself I did not want that anymore," she continued, her voice rising in pitch as the confession became a torrent. "That wanting it again... wanting that kind of hunger would be some kind of betrayal to everything I’ve become."

"To everything I lost. And then I stand in a doorway and I watch the two of you, and I feel something I haven’t let myself feel since before Veylor died!" Her jaw tightened, the memory of blood and screaming soldiers flashing behind her eyelids. "I feel that same desperate, filthy need..."

"And I hate it. God, Rex, I hate how much I want it."

She stopped abruptly, gasping for air as if she had just run miles. Her chest heaved, her pulse visible in the hollow of her throat.

The confession hung between them, ugly and exposed, stripped of all pretense and dignity. She felt naked in the fading light, more exposed than if she had truly been standing there without armor.

’I’ve destroyed everything,’ she thought bitterly, her inner voice a venomous whisper. ’I’ve handed him the knife to cut me open, and I’ve done it willingly.’

She forced herself to meet his gaze, refusing to flinch even as her eyes burned with unshed tears of frustration. She had to finish this to put the wound to the cautery.

"I am not asking you to choose me over her," she said, each word measured, though her breathing remained ragged. "I would never ask that..."

"I am not that delusional... I am telling you this because I am tired of pretending I do not notice!"

"I am tired of the lies."

She took half a step forward, the gravel crunching beneath her boot a harsh, violent sound in the quiet evening. "I am telling you because some part of me, some broken, pathetic part of me, wants to know what it feels like."

"To be looked at the way you look at Diana... To feel that violence, that absolute possession..."

"Just once."

Her voice dropped to a whisper, almost lost to the wind. "I do not need it to mean anything beyond that..."

"I don’t need love. I don’t need promises."

"I just need to know what it feels like to be consumed."

Rex set the bow aside with a slow, deliberate scrape against the wooden bench, the sound echoing like a blade being drawn. He didn’t speak immediately.

Instead, he simply watched her, his dark eyes tracking the frantic rise and fall of her chest, the way her fingers twitched against her thighs.

The silence between them was no longer empty; it was pressurized, heavy with the unspoken implications of her confession.

Then, he laughed.

It wasn’t a kind laugh. It wasn’t a laugh of amusement or shared understanding.

It was a low, rough sound that rumbled from deep in his chest, a predator’s laugh at the predictable desperation of prey.
