Chapter 505 - 434: Social Survey
Healing requires benevolence.
Sometimes a person’s reputation is their greatest shield. When your reputation reaches a certain height, even if you are powerless, no one dares to lay a finger on you.
Of course, a reputation is also a double-edged sword; it can elevate you to the heavens, or it can drag you into the deep mud.
For now, that’s not something he needs to worry about. At best, his fame is notable in Dongshan City, and it’s a stretch to say it extends to nearby places.
As for the entire Da Li, when they hear about Mr. Lin, they might just think it’s a joke.
Lin Miao is quick at diagnosing patients, averaging three to five minutes per consultation. Despite arriving late, by lunchtime, he had mostly finished seeing around thirty patients in the morning.
Wen Ruyu, on the other hand, saw fewer than twenty patients the whole morning. But considering it’s the first day of operations, it’s not guaranteed that there will be so many in the future.
However, Wen Ruyu has already done quite well; some small clinics can’t even see one patient in an entire morning.
Excluding the large clinics, which are often crowded and difficult to get an appointment with.
"Senior sister, on our first day at work, we came late and won’t go home for lunch. Let’s have Huaye Tower deliver it," Lin Miao said.
"Alright."
Even though it’s not far, going back and forth, plus eating, would take at least an hour.
This time would be wasted, so it’s better to have a simple meal at Yongning Hall, especially since she needs to prepare for the medical exams this year.
They sent someone to Huaye Tower with a message, and about half an hour later, a meticulously prepared meal of four dishes and a soup was delivered.
Of course, it wasn’t just Lin Miao and Sun Youwei eating; Xia Zhu and Wen Ruyu were there too.
Xia Zhu had no qualms, enjoying the meal as a student’s entitlement, whereas Wen Ruyu was purely taking advantage of the meal.
And it was food from Huaye Tower.
Lin Miao’s meal was made personally by Mr. Luu, the head chef of Huaye Tower, at least doubling the price.
"Xia Zhu, Mr. Wen, what’s the situation with you two? Is it settled?" Xia Zhu felt embarrassed to ask, so Lin Miao, her master, couldn’t ignore it.
"The family probably knows, but there hasn’t been any word yet," Wen Ruyu said, somewhat guilty, lowering his head as he took a bite of his meal.
"How about it, does your family disapprove?"
Wen Ruyu didn’t know what to say. His family wasn’t too pleased with Xia Zhu; with so many eligible ladies waiting for him back in the capital, he’d chosen a girl from a small town.
In the eyes of the Wen family, Xia Zhu was no different from a country bumpkin, especially in the eyes of his somewhat snobbish mother, who particularly looked down on Xia Zhu.
But Master Fu Qingzhu was supportive, recognizing the rarity of finding a compatible companion.
Both Wen Ruyu and Xia Zhu studied medicine, shared common ground, and could mutually enhance each other’s learning.
Particularly since Xia Zhu had a master like Lin Miao, her future prospects weren’t unsubstantial. The prominent ladies in the capital were mere pretty faces that couldn’t match his student.
So, the greatest opposition came from the Wen family.
If the Wen family disapproved of the marriage, it could become quite problematic.
"Mr. Wen, what do you think?" Lin Miao asked directly. If Xia Zhu married him, Wen Ruyu would rank lower than him by generation, so it was appropriate for him to ask as an elder, and there were no outsiders at the table.
"I’ve made up my mind, only Xia Zhu for me," Wen Ruyu said softly, stealing a glance at Xia Zhu, his eyes full of tenderness.
"Xia Zhu is my top disciple of the Lin Clan; I would never allow her to suffer. Regardless of your family’s stance, bullying my disciple is unacceptable," Lin Miao warned. "Xia Zhu nearly ruined her reputation for you, and I absolutely forbid such a thing from happening again."
Wen Ruyu looked a bit embarrassed. Matters of marriage ultimately required his parents’ approval. Though they weren’t entirely satisfied with Xia Zhu’s background, they hadn’t outright refused.
The Wen family looked down on Lin Miao and Xia Zhu, but they couldn’t dismiss Mr. Fu’s endorsement, could they?
"Hurry and settle the marriage. Xia Zhu is getting older and can’t afford to wait," Lin Miao said.
"Alright," Wen Ruyu agreed, glancing at Xia Zhu, realizing he needed to take it seriously. Xia Zhu was about the same age as him, but women didn’t have the same privilege as men; men could marry even at forty, but how many women could marry a twenty-year-old lad at that age?
Sun Youwei gently nudged Lin Miao with her elbow, reminding him not to be too harsh and to show Wen Ruyu some respect.
After all, he was still an official of the court.
Lin Miao understood his senior sister’s kind reminder, but some matters needed to be addressed seriously.
Otherwise, given their slow personalities, who knows when they would finally tie the knot?
"Mr. Wen, I have an idea..."
"Investigating the issue of infant mortality, how should that be done?" Wen Ruyu, eager to make a name for himself at Dongshan Prefecture Medical Bureau, was captivated by Lin Miao’s idea, as infant mortality was a pressing medical issue.
But how to solve it and what measures to take, no dynasty had found an effective solution; after all, natural selection was a common occurrence.
Moreover, there were numerous restrictions on medication for infants, and many treatments for adults couldn’t be applied to them.
