The Only Cultivator in a World of Hunters

Chapter 29: Mark Gets Angry

Mark’s kindness was something Nexus naturally understood. And of course, Mark’s scheme had no way of being hidden from a transcendent existence like Nexus.

"Alright."

Nexus had one good trait. No matter what someone asked of him, he would agree. And every time he agreed to a request, he did so without any conditions.

Being one night late meant nothing to Nexus. Besides, being invited by someone like this in another plane for the first time was an interesting experience.

Seeing that Nexus actually agreed so easily, Mark froze. He had been preparing all kinds of ways to persuade him, never expecting that none of them would be needed.

"That’s great then. This area isn’t very peaceful at night. The thugs around here are all crazy. If you keep wandering the streets, you’ll easily run into danger like what just happened."

At Mark’s attempt to make Nexus dislike other people, Nexus frowned slightly.

Even if he wasn’t a disciple, he was staying at Mark’s house for the time being now. Staying silent the whole time wasn’t a good thing either, so he spoke.

"Your thinking is too narrow."

"Huh?"

Mark scratched his ear and stared at Nexus in confusion. What was that supposed to mean in this situation?

No matter how he thought about it, he couldn’t figure it out. Nexus was probably even stranger than he had imagined.

"How am I narrow-minded?"

Even though Mark wasn’t arrogant like Bell, or maybe life had beaten him down so much that he never had the chance to be arrogant, being called narrow-minded out of nowhere was naturally something he couldn’t accept.

How many years had Mark struggled to survive all alone? He had even thrown away his pride to beg for a free awakening opportunity from the Wolf Guild.

After everything he had been through, it was hard for Mark to accept being judged as narrow-minded by someone like Nexus, who knew nothing about his miserable life.

"Then tell me, do you think this is a place where people live?"

As Nexus walked, he spoke with the calm bearing of an enlightened master... Well, he wasn’t even human, so having an aura different from ordinary people made perfect sense.

"Of course it is. If people don’t live here, then what does? This is a residential area."

Mark frowned, genuinely not understanding anything. He only felt that Nexus was asking something so ridiculous that even a three-year-old would know the answer.

"You still don’t understand why I said your thinking is too narrow?"

Nexus gently shook his head. Mark’s intelligence disappointed him a little. It wasn’t that his expectations were too high, but because everyone he had interacted with throughout his life had been cultivators whose minds worked as fast as supercomputers.

"What the hell does that question have to do with me being narrow-minded? Just say what you want to say."

Mark had always thought he was very patient, but right now he felt a slight urge to punch someone.

If he hadn’t been fully aware that he was just an F-rank, not a combat type, and also malnourished, he would’ve already smacked Nexus on the head.

"You are human, and they are human too. Aside from a small number of individuals born with intellectual disabilities, you are not that different from them. You look down on them and criticize them, yet you forget that they know happiness, sadness, pain, anger, and above all, they know how to think.

You always believe that you are the center of everything, thinking you are the most miserable person while forgetting that you are just another human like them.

Don’t judge or look down on them based only on the little you know about them. Try putting yourself in their position and see if you could really do better than they did. Maybe they’ve made mistakes right now, but as long as they can talk and understand each other, everyone can still reach a better ending in this lifetime."

Mark silently listened to everything Nexus said. But... he didn’t want to understand. He didn’t want to care about anyone else’s life either.

He had cared too much about Mia before, and what was the result? She ran off with someone richer and stronger than him. She chose a brighter future instead of staying with someone who had lost everything like him.

Fate had already treated him so cruelly that he barely had any reason left to keep living, so how could he possibly have the strength to think about anyone else?

"What the hell do you know? Have you ever lived even a single second of my life to stand there lecturing me?!"

Mark shouted right into his face. His eyes turned red, but he still forced himself not to cry.

"You’re only F-rank too. You’re trash just like me. This society doesn’t value you either. Someone like you would only end up as a scout in a dungeon and die as cannon fodder. And you still dare say you believe in that way of thinking?"

Still unable to vent all his frustration, Mark kept shouting at Nexus. The emotions he had suppressed for so long were stirred up by Nexus and burst out all at once.

You could say Mark was selfish, but that selfishness came from instinct. Everyone was born with it, and it was necessary for humanity to survive in the wild.

But civilized humanity was no longer the clever race it had once been. Throughout thousands of years of civilization, there had surely been many people who overcame their innate selfishness and reached a more extraordinary state of mind.

But if those people kept that state of mind only for themselves, then they were just selfish people fooling themselves into believing they had surpassed everyone else.

"I don’t need to believe in it. Truth doesn’t need anyone’s belief because it is the truth."

Seeing Mark like this, Nexus didn’t try to comfort him. He simply spoke calmly. Even though Nexus’s attitude was somewhat casual, he had already seen the problem in Mark’s way of thinking and had tried to help him.

But if Mark refused to listen, then Nexus could only leave him alone. The only reason Nexus had gone this far to help someone was because of Lucifer. Otherwise, there was no chance he would say even a single useful word to Mark.

"Get the hell out! You’re not welcome here."

Mark’s mental state was already unstable, and facing Nexus’s indifferent attitude only drove him even closer to losing his mind.

Maybe this was his last chance to obtain greater power, but he didn’t want it anymore. He didn’t need the pity of someone who treated his tragic life so lightly.
