Chapter 51: Mark’s Enlightenment
Relying on this system to do anything useful right now was impossible. Nexus had no choice but to take matters into his own hands.
Although he initially planned to leave Mark to overcome it on his own, this situation wasn’t looking too good. He couldn’t help too much, but a few words of encouragement were fine.
"Mark, have you forgotten about your grudge?"
Nexus’s cold voice rang in Mark’s ears, making Mark suddenly regain his senses. The hatred in his eyes had already overwhelmed most of the extreme shame he was feeling.
"As long as I’m alive, I won’t forget."
"You should think carefully about what matters more. If you can’t even overcome this, then what right do you have to surpass Bell?
The moment Bell was mentioned, Mark’s mood immediately got worse. But this kind of bad mood wasn’t making him go crazy like the shame he felt earlier. Instead, it was more like a kind of pressure.
Nexus wasn’t advising Mark to go get revenge. This was just a psychological trick to temporarily balance out Mark’s chaotic emotions.
Besides, if he could accomplish this, then Mark would truly surpass Bell in terms of mentality. Bell’s carefree temperament of doing whatever he wanted would probably never be able to reach that state in his entire life.
"Hatred, shame, pride, or anything else that you feel... Remember, they exist because you exist. You are the master of your body and soul, not the other way around. Only by controlling them at will, or at the very least being able to immediately calm yourself down when necessary, can you go far on the path of cultivation. If you want to give up cultivating, I won’t stop you. But if you want to cultivate, then don’t treat this like a joke, or you’ll still be no different from today at the end of your life."
Nexus patiently taught him, but this content was far too necessary for Mark. Nexus always taught Mark to the best of his ability, regardless of his innate talent. In other words, Nexus was using a training program designed to create immortals to teach someone who didn’t even want to become an immortal.
Everything would be much simpler and much easier if a mid-level cultivator were Mark’s master.
Mark said nothing and just lowered his head, remaining silent for a long time. Then, he raised his head, his eyes turning toward where his body was dancing.
There was only one thought in his mind: He wasn’t born to be a useless piece of trash forever.
This time was completely different from before. Mark looked at things much more objectively, but it still wasn’t enough for him to completely stop feeling embarrassed.
Mark closed his eyes and listened carefully to every laugh and joke from everyone around him. They were all laughing at him... no, there were still a few people who felt sorry for him instead of laughing at him.
Sitting cross-legged and floating in midair, Mark tried for the first time to clearly listen to what everyone was saying about him. Then he opened his eyes and looked at each person one by one, before realizing a truth...
No one actually cared about him.
A lot of people only glanced at him for a few seconds, threw out a few nasty remarks, and then left. Most of them didn’t really care about his existence at all, and maybe by tomorrow, many of them would forget that there had once been a guy dancing naked in the middle of this street.
It was ridiculous that he had nearly gone crazy over a bunch of people who didn’t even care what his name was, let alone need to know who he was.
And as for what happened before, what Bell had done to him... Had Bell ever considered him something worth paying attention to? Or had Bell simply seen Mark as a random trash can to dump all his frustration into.
Mark didn’t understand why he suddenly raised his head and looked at the sky, staring into nowhere. He didn’t even know what he was looking at anymore, he just stared for a long time before finally sighing.
"Why do I exist?"
"To become stronger? Become stronger and get revenge on the Wolf guild. But what will I do after I get my revenge? Haha..."
Then he laughed, laughing for a long time like a madman who had realized that the biggest joke wasn’t that naked body dancing over there, but himself.
"Hahaha... I get it. I get it! So it turns out I don’t know anything at all. Hahahaha..."
Mark waved his arms around wildly, his unsteady footsteps going nowhere. The eyes that had just looked like those of a young man now resembled those of an old man, so old that it was impossible to measure.
"I always overreact to everything. I’m sad, I’m lonely, I’m hateful, I’m ashamed, I’m jealous... But what if my entire life was turned upside down? It wouldn’t make any difference either because I’ve never truly understood anything."
"Who am I? Mark is just a name, not me. What do I want? Revenge is driven by emotion; it’s not something I truly want either. Why was I born? This body was born from my parents; my parents were born from my grandparents; my grandparents were born from people before them, and further back, everything was born from this universe. As for the soul... It’s unclear, but I’m certain the source of both my body and soul is God. God, why do I exist?"
Mark didn’t follow any religion, but he understood the meaning of the word ’God’. He didn’t know what God looked like, but at the moment of enlightenment, he knew that God was absolutely more trustworthy than anyone else. Neither the system nor his master was an exception.
Even though he looked completely crazy, Mark no longer felt the slightest bit of shame. His eyes calmly finished reading the final part of the cultivation technique.
[Shit! It’s broken! Is he using a speed hack to reach the end? If this keeps up, how can he continue worshiping this great system.]
The system panicked the moment it saw Mark’s appearance. At this rate, even though he hadn’t reached the limit yet, Mark’s mentality was already almost qualified to become an immortal entity. The system knew very well that no immortal entity would ever praise it.
"Hahaha..."
Nexus rarely laughed out loud. He didn’t expect that saying just a few words would give him such a huge surprise.
"Someone who doesn’t want to become an immortal is being led by fate onto the path of becoming an immortal? No, he should have become an angel at the end of the path, but because of me, he strayed a little. Interesting, this is really interesting."
