Chapter 84: The Plan to Gather Spiritual Herbs
Thirty years ago, in a moment of despair while facing a monster, Peter received a blessing from an angel. From the moment he took on that extraordinary power, Peter carried a promise that has stayed with him until now.
He was one of the first generation of hunters, one of the pioneers who lit the spark of hope for humanity during that dark era. He was the man who united the scattered hunter forces everywhere into an alliance, and that alliance is now called the Hunter Association.
Peter wasn’t the kind of chairman who just sat in an office all day. He regularly went out to help people, rescue them, or deal with red gate incidents.
Twenty years ago, a gate near a residential area turned into a red gate. Even though they responded quickly, most of the surrounding area was destroyed, and many people died.
Among those ruins, Peter found a little girl with an injured eye, yet she wasn’t afraid at all. Even though she had gone blind, White’s faith and enlightenment surprised Peter. More importantly, she had never even stepped into a church or read a single word from any related books.
From their very first meeting, Peter decided that she had the potential to become an extraordinary human. Even if she awakened some ridiculous ability, she would still be useful to the Hunter Association.
Peter still remembered that little girl clearly. Without even seeing his face, she asked him one question: Why do you exist?
That moment truly shocked Peter because it was the first time anyone had ever asked him that. Even after ten years, his answer remained exactly the same as it was in that moment.
After that, White kept following Peter. No matter how much he tried to chase her away, she refused to leave, so he ended up raising her in what he believed was the most suitable way.
Even though there was a huge age gap between them, from that moment on, Peter saw her as a companion rather than a pitiful child who needed him to take care of her.
"Looks like you’re not so old that you’ve gone senile yet. Good that you still remember. But if this era really comes to an end, people like us will probably become leftovers, right?"
White nodded in satisfaction as she looked at Peter. If he had really forgotten, she probably would’ve flipped the Hunter Association headquarters upside down.
"What? Starting to get attached to your current position? Still want to play the world’s hero for another few decades?"
Peter asked half-jokingly. White was still very young, after all. Of course she couldn’t be like an old man like him.
In response, White rolled her eyes at him like she was looking at an alien.
"Are you kidding? What’s worth living about an era that needs heroes?"
"Exactly. Who would ever like an era like that?"
Peter had heard that answer from her many times already, so he wasn’t surprised. Even though he knew what she’d say, he still asked once in a while. Probably because he was getting old and talked too much.
Heroes were obviously good people, but the era that created heroes was shit. Without the blood and tears of countless people, heroes would never be born.
Neither Peter nor White liked that. They wanted to save people, not use people’s lives to polish their own names.
"White, if I push forward a worldwide effort to gather spiritual herbs, your master won’t interfere, right?"
Peter suddenly changed the subject, leaving White stunned. Couldn’t he at least give her a warning before changing topics so she could keep up?
"No, he won’t take the initiative to do anything... I think I’m the rare exception that he actually teases first. It’s probably because my ability is connected to something that can catch his interest."
"Your ability? Could heaven have some connection to him?"
After all, Nexus was some kind of powerful existence, not a mortal, so Peter had no way of guessing his motives.
"How would I know? But why gather spiritual herbs? We already have quite a lot of that stuff."
Looking at the innocent expression of a thirty-year-old woman who looked just like a little girl, Peter flicked White on the forehead.
"You’ve stopped paying for things for so long that you’ve forgotten the value of money, haven’t you? Spiritual herbs aren’t worth much right now, but that’s only because other people still don’t know they’re useful for cultivation. We move before they catch on."
"If you keep hitting my head, one day I’ll actually become an idiot. If you want to do it, then just do it. It’s not like I care about this stuff anyway."
White pouted and looked away. She wasn’t stupid. Her mind just wasn’t built for this kind of thing, so she didn’t think the same way Peter did.
"You’re not a kid anymore. How can you not know anything about finance?"
Seeing White like this gave Peter a bit of a headache. Back then, the way he raised her focused entirely on how to become a great hunter, and he ended up neglecting everything else.
"If I wanted to learn, what’s so hard about it? But why would I? My job has nothing to do with this stuff anyway. Besides, if I wanted money, plenty of people would gladly give it to me."
Even though she knew nothing about money, White still knew her own worth. She had saved a lot of people, and many of them were extremely wealthy. If she wanted to, she could retire right now and live comfortably for the rest of her life.
"Alright then. Does cultivating cause huge disturbances or destroy the surrounding environment?"
Peter had never cultivated before, so he wasn’t sure. He needed to know so he could arrange the most suitable place for White to cultivate.
"No. At least not in the Qi Refinement realm. I’m not sure about higher realms, but Qi Refinement doesn’t cause any major effects."
White opened the cultivation technique again to make sure. Since receiving it, she had only skimmed through part of it instead of memorizing it.
"Then we’ll go straight to the spiritual herb storage. Use as much as you want. You can even use it all."
After saying that, Peter led White to the elevator that went down to the deepest floor of the Hunter Association headquarters. This floor stored the most important things and was also the safest floor.
