The Protagonist System

Lucy tried to not let her anticipation show as Kiwi led her inside the storefront for Atlas Incorporated. Neither of them realized it was also the corporate HQ and that the clerk hired to run the place was pretty much running the entire thing as Atlas ran around doing whatever he wanted.

The clerk didn't mind Lucy having company and greeted Kiwi like a long lost friend that she hadn't seen in a while, even though it was only that morning that Kiwi had been there for her own appointment.

Lucy wasn't there for surgery, though. She wanted to talk about technology and the advancements Atlas had made, as well as to hear from his own mouth what he would say when she asked him to make all of her dreams come true.

The clerk laughed when Lucy blurted that out loud and Kiwi slapped a hand over her friend's mouth. She brought them into the back room where the surgical setup was and Lucy was captivated by the advanced setup that every ripperdoc on the planet would kill to have. It was even better than some of the hospitals she had seen.

After telling them to have a seat and to make themselves comfortable, the clerk left them alone in the back room and called her boss to remind him of the appointment. It gave her a little thrill every time she called him directly, because she knew that she was the only one he allowed to do that. Everyone else had to call his cyberdeck and leave a message.

After a few minutes, Atlas entered through the front door to thank her for calling and he went into the back to have another life altering conversation. The clerk sat down behind her desk and smiled as she remembered her own casual conversation with him and how her life had immediately changed to one she was proud to have.

Like what happened to her, she knew it wouldn't take long before Lucy agreed to do anything Atlas wanted her to do, in order to have a job with his corporation. A shouted surprise was all the clerk needed to confirm her thoughts and she held in her laugh at being right.

She placed a call to the man that had been delighted as Atlas tore apart the PetroChem facilities and the Coronado Dam they had ruined. His revenge had been satisfied by that and he had been put in charge of the money used to pay the workers that ran the filtration stations all along the new canal and maintaining the water in the mini-reservoir where the old PetroChem water processing plant had been.

They had another pleasant conversation about their new lives and how much they enjoyed them, then she relayed to him how Atlas was doing similar things to two new people. They shared a laugh at the reactions Atlas always had after helping people and the two of them continued chatting, just like they did every day.

Hanako Arasaka and Michiko Arasaka were surprised when a military grade AV flew in and landed right in front of the Arasaka Tower. They had expected a cargo vehicle of some kind and not this kind of response. The deployment ramp opened and several well dressed armored guards came out, without their weapons, and carried several large crates.

Before Michiko could ask what they had, another set of guards came out of the back of the AV with a set of more elaborate front doors to replace the ones ZetaTech had destroyed. She was quite surprised by the thoughtfulness, as were the Arasaka guards, because they stepped aside and let them go to work.

They watched as the Atlas Inc. guards used small lasers to clear out the damaged parts on the building and built up a better opening, then they slid the new doors right into place, secured them with another kind of laser, and then hooked them up to the existing wires.

The crates of parts were brought into the lobby of the building, set down, and the guards left. This also surprised Michiko, because who in their right minds would let such expensive materials out of their sight? They didn't even leave a token guard to stand near the several crates.

The large military-style AV lifted off and flew away, leaving behind some quite stunned guards and two slightly confused executive women that stared at the retreating vehicle. This was fortunate, because they then saw another sleek AV that looked like a flying limo fly into view. It came in to land and everyone tensed slightly as the back door opened.

Veder stepped out wearing his Arasaka Academy uniform and everyone relaxed, even Hanako and Michiko. He had kept his promise to return quickly with replacement servers and other parts needed for the repairs, which was something they were quite grateful for. He saw their faces and smiled warmly at them, which made them blush a little.

Michiko because it reminded her of her husband's own smile and Hanako because no one had ever smiled at her like that. Instead of commenting on their reactions, Veder turned back to the open car door and held a hand out, which was taken by a dainty hand.

Hanako gasped when a perfectly fine Yuri stepped out of the AV and clasped Veder's arm. Michiko looked shocked at seeing her alive and wondered how Veder brought her back after she had disintegrated. Hanako had shown her the recording of what happened and it was so similar to a digital avatar dissolving after someone died that she had assumed Yuri had been taken offline permanently.

“It's so nice to be back home.” Yuri said and walked over to the two women. “Veder and I just have to clean up a few things first and everything will be fine.”

Hanako looked almost scared as she reached out to touch her arm, then she caught her breath when her fingers hit solid flesh. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Yuri and hugged her tightly, small tears appearing in her eyes. She felt so relieved that her father hadn't killed her friend that she couldn't keep her composure any longer.

Yuri let Veder's arm go and hugged Hanako back as she whispered that she was okay, thanks to Atlas saving her, and that she would never leave her side ever again. That promise made Hanako let out a sob and Yuri petted her hair to try and calm her down.

The guards were smart and and turned away from the scene, not only to save face, it was to give Hanako a sense of privacy and none of them would ever make fun of her for it.

Veder motioned for Michiko to help Yuri with her aunt before he easily picked up one of the larger crates that had needed two people to carry it. She stared at him as he carried the thing to the stairs and he went up them as if he wasn't carrying such a heavy burden.

Michiko shook her head at the surprising sight and waved over several of the guards to get them to carry the rest. They needed those servers installed as soon as possible and then they could finally let out all of the academy students from their locked VR prisons.

Carrie Vogel and her friends had spent most of the day talking and pretending the entire lockdown was just a public pyjama party. They had even dragged in the other girls in the class to enjoy it instead of freaking out about being trapped inside the Green Room like the guys were.

Some ranted, some raged, and a couple of them even cried. Needless to say, those guys had lost any interest the girls had in them and there was no way to regain it. After showing their true selves during a crisis, the girls knew they would react in a similar way the next time something happened.

Of course, the entire time they had been talking, Carrie, Kei, and Evelyn had been wondering what had happened to Veder. As soon as the announcement had been made, he had disappeared and hadn't come back. It gave them hope at first, that he was out there working to free them, then time crawled on and that hope started to become sadness that something bad had happened to him.

Was it an attack on the academy or on the company? Was it a physical one or a virtual one? What kind of situation were they going to be in when they were finally released from the lockdown? It gave the girls a small feeling of dread to think about that, so they covered up their uneasiness with jokes, teasing, and chatting about who they wouldn't mind getting some output from.

By the time the notice finally arrived that the emergency was over, all of them were very hungry and had missed both lunch and supper. The girls that had skipped breakfast to enjoy having lunch with Veder, and the delicious foods he usually brought, were much hungrier than the rest.

When they logged out and woke up in the real world, all of their stomachs were loudly growling to be fed. The guys accepted it as what it was and the girls all felt embarrassed that they heard it or had other people hear it from them.

“It's okay, everyone. I have supplements to ease your pains and easily digestible foods for you to eat.” Veder's voice rang out.

The girls that were his close friends in the class gasped and sat up to turn around and stare at him. He stood at the back of the room beside a large table full of prepared food and he had a medical container in his hands with small bottles of liquid inside.

“Thank god you're alright.” Carrie said out loud and received a lot of looks in return. She didn't blush at the scrutiny or felt embarrassed at expressing herself, though.

Her lesson with speaking up against her own mother and then keeping her job while her mother was shuffled off to another department? It had been enlightening in a way that most people didn't get to experience.

“I'm glad you are, too.” Veder said and held out a potion bottle. “Now drink up and eat. You need to recover your strength before Delamain takes you all home.”

Carrie was the first to walk over to him and she drank it without even asking what it was. She sighed happily as her stomach pains disappeared and she handed the bottle back. Veder waved at the table of food and she nodded and started picking at things, then she started eating like a person possessed.

The other girls ran over to drink their own bottles of stomach soother and then joined Carrie at the table. The food was just as delicious as it always was and they ate at a pace that should have caused them more stomach pains.

The rest of the class soon joined them and they were soon full and feeling great. They left the classroom and joined all of the other students that were leaving as well. They all filed out of the front doors of the building and were met with a mass of taxis that were there to take them all home.

Veder was one of them and he waved to Carrie and her friends before he climbed into a Delamain taxi and drove off back to his penthouse apartment. He had to shower and change before meeting up with Denise and the girls to go out partying. They deserved it after the long day they had.

After a few drinks and a lot of dancing, they took a break and moved to a quieter private room in the back. They weren't planning on doing anything dirty and only wanted a quieter place to rest for a few minutes and to talk.

They sat in the booth and Veder told them about what he did to get the servers up and running, and how with Yuri's help, they managed to get all of the previous programs back into place and started everything up again. Before he could get into the specifics, the room's door opened and a green and purple haired woman entered carrying a small portable cyberdeck and a box full of BDs.

The woman set the deck and the box down on the table in front of them and started flipping through the box of BDs. “Name's Judy. Judy blinked her eyes at him and then glanced at the four women around him.

“How did you figure out the time acceleration thing, anyway?” Denise asked.

“The mind can perceive a lot of things, except for the passage of time, unless they have a physical representation of what time it is. I've had dreams that felt like they lasted for days; and yet, I had only been asleep for a couple of hours.”

“So, as long as things are happening, you'll never notice how much time actually passes. It'll just feel like it was a lot of time.” Denise said in understanding.

“You got it.” Veder responded and gave her a kiss, then handed her a pile of eddies. “Can you go grab us more drinks while we wait?”

Denise took the money and left the room. Her third friend gave the door a look, then looked at Judy sitting next to her. After a moment, she smirked and slid off of the booth seat and under the table. The other two didn't say anything as they leaned in close to Veder and watched as her hands appeared from under the table and opened his pants up.
