Chapter 278 - 277: Strangers on the Road
On the morning of the first day, Yiyi got up early, helped her mother prepare breakfast, and then called everyone to eat.
After eating, they picked up their things and set off.
"Yuejun, how much longer until we get there?"
Chu Gangyi and Chu Hongyi were not regular exercisers. As they climbed halfway up the mountain, they started to feel exhausted.
Seeing this, Ding Yuejun quickly said, "Almost there, it’s just ahead, we’ll reach it in another five minutes." Hearing this, the Chu brothers perked up and continued onward.
Sure enough, in less than five minutes, they arrived at a relatively flat area, right in front of a graveyard.
There was a hint of sadness in Ding Yuejun’s eyes as she quietly walked to her foster mother’s grave, placed offerings, lit incense, and then bowed deeply.
Seeing this, Yiyi hurried forward and offered incense to her grandmother. Gu Tingyu naturally followed Yiyi to offer incense and bowed respectfully as well.
The expressions of the Chu brothers were very complex; they had not expected that seeing their aunt again would be under these circumstances, separated by life and death. Moved, they too stepped forward to offer incense and bow with sincere reverence in their eyes.
Once the incense burned out, Ding Yuejun slowly began tidying up and finally said softly, "Mother, Yiyi and I are doing well now, you don’t need to worry about us. Moreover, I have reunited with our great uncle and the others. I always knew you wanted to go home, and now I’ve helped you fulfill that wish."
Chu Gangyi hurriedly added, "Aunt, we will also take care of cousin Yuejun and Yiyi in the future, so there really is no need to worry."
Chu Hongyi also said a few words.
Finally, Ding Yuejun noticed the strong wind and said to them, "The incense is lit, let’s head back."
The wind on the mountain was indeed strong, so everyone nodded and slowly walked back down the mountain.
However, they hadn’t expected to run into the Mo family halfway down.
"You... are you Ding Yuejun?"
Qian Yafen looked at the woman in front of her in disbelief, unable to hide her surprise.
Standing in front of her, Ding Yuejun was wearing a blue-gray wool coat, wide black pants, and flat black leather shoes, exuding a fashionable aura. She looked more attractive than those in the city. Most importantly, Ding Yuejun’s face was fair and flawless, like she was back in her teenage years; some might even believe she just got married.
Beside her, Mo Guowei stared blankly at Ding Yuejun, eyes filled with shock and regret. Why had he foolishly agreed to the divorce back then? This Ding Yuejun was truly captivating, even more so than when he saw her in town before.
Ding Yuejun naturally noticed Mo Guowei’s expression and looked upon him with disgust.
This man not only deceived her, causing her to plunge into marriage unknowingly, but also treated their mother-daughter pair harshly. Now he dares to look at her that way, making her feel sick. "Yiyi, let’s go."
Upon seeing Mo Guowei and his companions, Yiyi’s expression turned cold. Hearing her mother’s words, she naturally followed without hesitation.
However, Qian Yafen stepped forward, saying, "Yuejun, why rush off so quickly? We haven’t seen each other in a long time. Why don’t we have a chat?" She looked at Chu Gangyi and Chu Hongyi, whose extraordinary bearing suggested they weren’t ordinary. She was eager to know who they were and why they were with the mother-daughter duo.
Ding Yuejun paid no attention to Qian Yafen and walked straight ahead.
Seeing this, Qian Yafen’s smile faded.
She snorted, "What’s the big deal? You’re just the unwanted trash of our Mo family. Now Guowei has remarried, see? It’s Xiao Lian standing beside him now. You look all fancy now, but who knows how you got it. Maybe you slept around to afford new clothes."
Yiyi hadn’t intended on the first day of the new year to start a conflict with the Mo family, but hearing those words, she couldn’t hold back. Turning around, she gazed coldly at Qian Yafen, walking towards her step by step.
Qian Yafen was startled by Yiyi’s gaze. The current Yiyi looked as if she could devour someone, radiating a fearsome and bloodthirsty aura.
Before Yiyi could act, Ding Yuejun quickly stepped forward.
"Slap..." She slapped Qian Yafen across the face.
"You..."
Qian Yafen was utterly taken aback by the slap, momentarily stunned.
Ding Yuejun looked at her coldly and said, "Like a dog can’t stop itself from barking, you haven’t changed from spewing filth. I’ll let it slide this time, but if I hear it again, don’t blame me for being unkind."
At this point, Chu Gangyi and Chu Hongyi stood on either side of Ding Yuejun, staring frostily at the Mo family members.
They already knew a bit about Ding Yuejun and Yiyi’s situation and realized these were the despicable Mo family members. They showed no kindness. Finally, Chu Gangyi concernedly asked Ding Yuejun, "Yuejun, should we drive them away so we don’t see them next time we come?"
Chu Hongyi added, "Yeah, seeing these people just ruins one’s appetite."
Upon hearing this, Ding Yuejun shook her head, saying, "No need, we only come here once a year."
She understood that the Chu brothers could drive them out, but the Mo family had lived in Luwei Village for generations; she really hadn’t thought of driving them out.
Beside her, Yiyi also said, "Uncle, no need to trouble yourselves; they pose no threat to us." For Yiyi, the Mo family was just a bunch of strangers; even if they met, they wouldn’t exchange a greeting. She had long since become indifferent, almost to the point of disdain.
Hearing Yiyi’s words, the Chu brothers said no more.
Qian Yafen and the others were puzzled, though; Yiyi called the two men uncles. Could it be that Ding Yuejun had found her family? By the way Chu Gangyi and Chu Hongyi carried themselves, they were surely wealthy. Could it be Ding Yuejun was the daughter of a rich family, which is why she could afford such nice clothes?
The more they thought about it, the more it seemed so. The one who regretted the most was Mo Guowei; he felt a deep regret but couldn’t bring himself to speak as he looked at the few people before him.
After slapping Qian Yafen, Ding Yuejun didn’t care to deal with the Mo family and returned with Yiyi and the others.
As Yiyi and the others’ figures receded into the distance, Mo Guowei was momentarily lost in thought.
Xiao Lian, who had been quietly standing by Mo Guowei’s side, raised an eyebrow and said, "What, regretting it now? Hmph... Even if your ex-wife was blind, she wouldn’t make up with you." With that, she pinched Mo Guowei’s soft flesh, fiercely pulling him up the mountain.
