Chapter 269 - 268: Discussion
After the two families set the date, everyone was very pleased. Yue Jun invited Mr. Gu and Old Mrs. Gu to stay for dinner.
The two elders agreed with smiles on their faces.
Yiyi then got up to help in the kitchen, but Yue Jun waved her hand and said, "No need, no need, I can handle it myself. You should call your master next door to tell him about your engagement and bring Mo Ping over for dinner. We’ll have a proper gathering tonight."
Yiyi nodded at these words.
When she got next door, Yiyi discovered Guo Ming talking with Pei Jin.
"Yiyi, weren’t you at Mr. Gu’s house today? Why are you back now?" In the morning, he had looked for his apprentice next door but returned to handle matters after finding she wasn’t there.
Yiyi smiled and said, "Master, Grandpa and Grandma also came to discuss the engagement between me and Gu Tingyu with my mother. We’ll have dinner together later."
"What... you’re getting engaged?"
Guo Ming couldn’t help but frown. Although he knew early on that his apprentice was about to be taken away, he didn’t expect it to happen so soon.
"Master, what’s wrong?"
Seeing Guo Ming’s displeased expression, Yiyi couldn’t help but ask.
"It’s nothing. We’ll go over later."
Although he felt reluctant, he could see that his little apprentice was very happy, indicating her satisfaction with the marriage. As her master, he should sincerely bless her, not hold her back. "It was just some difficult matters with the Yin sect that troubled me, so I looked a bit gloomy earlier. But hearing about your engagement, I’m very happy." He smiled as he spoke.
Seeing this, Yiyi was full of smiles.
"Thank you, Master."
Pei Jin couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. He was the one who reported the earlier matters, and he didn’t know of any difficult issues with the Yin sect.
After a few more exchanges between the master and apprentice, they took Pei Jin next door.
Mr. Gu saw Guo Ming and happily greeted him.
Guo Ming naturally reciprocated warmly. He quite liked Gu Tingyu’s grandparents since they had always treated Yiyi well, and he enjoyed chatting with them.
"Hello, Master."
Gu Tingyu also greeted Guo Ming as "Master".
Hearing this, Guo Ming couldn’t help but glance at him, but he didn’t correct him. Since they were about to get engaged, calling him "Master" seemed fine. But when he learned that Gu Tingyu’s parents hadn’t planned to come over, Guo Ming’s expression turned displeased.
"For such a big event like the engagement, are your parents not coming?"
Upon hearing this, Mr. Gu chimed in, "Master Guo, Tingyu’s marriage will be handled carefully by his grandmother and me."
"Do Tingyu’s parents know about today’s engagement between the two families?"
At this point, even Mr. Gu didn’t speak further.
Before coming, they wanted to inform Gu Yaohua and Yu Qiulan, but learning that the eldest daughter-in-law still favored Shu Yunfang, they came over directly without notifying the eldest son.
Realizing Mr. Gu’s reaction, Guo Ming understood everything. His brows furrowed even more tightly.
"It’s better to inform Tingyu’s parents about such matters, to avoid them not acknowledging Yiyi later." By the end, his face wasn’t very pleasant. He knew how outstanding Yiyi was, yet Gu Tingyu’s parents showed little enthusiasm, which made him very dissatisfied. If not for Mr. Gu and Old Mrs. Gu’s sincerity, he would have left now, disagreeing with the marriage.
"That’s our mistake. I’ll contact Tingyu’s parents right away."
Mr. Gu felt that Guo Ming was correct. After all, Tingyu’s parents were his biological parents and should be informed about such a major event as an engagement.
While Mr. Gu went to contact them, Old Mrs. Gu stayed to chat with Yiyi and her master.
Seeing Old Mrs. Gu’s enthusiastic demeanor, Guo Ming said no more and struck up a conversation with her. When he learned that the engagement was set for New Year’s, he nodded approvingly and said, "That’s a good date. We can prepare well by then."
"Yes, I think it’s great too. We’ll invite friends and family so everyone knows Yiyi will be our Gu family’s granddaughter-in-law." Old Mrs. Gu, full of joy, held Yiyi’s hand.
Seeing her like this, Guo Ming finally felt a bit better.
Just then, Mr. Gu returned from the call, smiling, "Tingyu’s parents are on their way over; we’ll discuss everything together later. If possible, maybe we can set the wedding date too."
"There’s no rush for the wedding, as Yiyi is still studying."
Guo Ming thought it was too soon to plan the wedding when they hadn’t even secured the engagement yet.
Yue Jun, coming out with a tray of fruit, agreed, "Yes, let’s discuss the wedding after Yiyi graduates."
Gu Tingyu was initially excited, but seeing both Guo Ming and Yue Jun reject the idea, he felt slightly disappointed. However, remembering Yiyi was about to be engaged to him cheered him up, as marriage was just a matter of time since he would always belong to Yiyi.
Gu Yaohua and Yu Qiulan arrived quickly and immediately greeted Guo Ming and Yue Jun.
Gu Yaohua was all smiles, genuinely happy for his son.
Yu Qiulan’s smile was somewhat forced, but remembering the warning from her father-in-law, she didn’t dare voice any opposition for fear that Mr. Gu would really make their Yu Family unwelcome in Shangjing. Then she’d have nowhere to turn, not even her family.
To bring Mo Yiyi into the family, Mr. Gu even issued such warnings, showing their great satisfaction with her, though she couldn’t understand what was so special about Mo Yiyi.
After forcing a smile for a while, Yu Qiulan felt her face stiffen. During dinner, she silently focused on eating without saying a word.
Seeing her this way, Old Mrs. Gu nodded approvingly.
Thankfully, the eldest daughter-in-law didn’t cause any trouble on such an important day, or she wouldn’t let her off easily.
Meanwhile, Gu Yaohua discussed the dowry with Guo Ming and Yue Jun.
"In-law, we’ll prepare a new home as their marriage house for Tingyu and Yiyi and a car for Yiyi. Regarding the dowry, you can decide what’s appropriate."
Hearing this, Yu Qiulan finally couldn’t remain silent.
She knew well the family’s financial situation; if her husband’s words stood, there’d be no savings left in the future.
But before Yu Qiulan could speak, Old Mrs. Gu quietly pinched her wrist and then nodded in agreement with a smile, "Yaohua is right. We’ll prepare everything well to ensure they can live comfortably."
