Chapter 63: Pragma Heart
Lea’s hand, which had been using the towel to dry her hair, suddenly froze as a wave of unease flooded her.
It felt as if her heart was being squeezed and her breath was being restricted.
And for some reason,
"Huh?" She let out a breath as her fingers touched her cheeks and she noticed a tear rolling down.
Lea was about to dismiss the feeling as another quirk of her Factors, but the more she thought about it, the more unease filled her.
With a sigh, she set the towel down and walked out of her room. "Maybe big brother will know what’s happening."
The closer she got to Liam’s room, the more intense the feeling of her heart being squeezed became.
"Big brother?" Lea called out as she knocked on the door, but even after a couple of knocks, there was no response.
She twisted the handle of the door, and she immediately realized that it was open.
But the moment she fully pushed open the door, her face went completely pale as she witnessed the sight steps away from the door.
Lying on the floor with blood pooling under his head was Liam. He lay on the floor, unmoving and with his eyes fully blank.
"B-big brother?" Lea immediately rushed to his side and knelt beside him.
Despite the blood, she turned him around, noticing that his body was quickly becoming paler by the second.
Her eyes quickly moved over his body, searching for any sign that he was still alive, but the only thing she could observe was that there was blood everywhere.
Too much blood.
"What happened?" Her voice was trembling as she placed two fingers against his neck and felt for a pulse.
Unfortunately, there was none.
Lea’s entire body trembled as she wished that this was some nightmare that she would soon wake up from.
After all, there was no way Liam would suddenly leave them.
Especially not now, after finally awakening her Factor and deciding that she would help him...
He just couldn’t!
Lea gritted her teeth as she placed both her palms on his chest. "You’re not allowed to do this."
Soon enough, her eyes took on a green glow as her Factor activated.
Her abilities immediately started going through Liam’s entire body, quickly searching for what was wrong and relaying it back to her.
Lea was horrified when she finally understood what happened to him.
His heart had exploded.... literally.
’Focus,’ Lea forced herself to calm as her Factor immediately got to work, ’panicking won’t fix this.’
She remained completely focused, and a couple of seconds later, she felt slight thumping beneath her palm..... But that didn’t cause her to relax.
Instead, her Factor ensured that his heart was as healthy as possible.
After a while, she stopped, waiting for him to finally wake up since her Factor had assured her that he was fine.
But even after a couple of minutes, he didn’t seem to be ready to regain consciousness anytime soon.
"Please wake up," Lea muttered as she rested her face into his chest, calmly feeling his heart beating.
A couple more minutes later,
"Ugh, that was horrible."
Lea suddenly lifted her head and noticed that Liam now had both his eyes open. He looked at her with a smile on his face as he muttered, "Hey, little sis."
Lea’s pupils trembled as tears began streaming down her face.
"..."
Liam silently looked at her for a moment before slowly sitting up and pulling her into a hug.
"I’m sorry."
He could tell that he really had scared her; after all, she basically just watched him die, or at least, he was close to dying.
"Y-you idiot, do you know how scared I was?" She let out in a trembling voice.
"I’m sorry," he said again as he continued holding her.
"W-what the hell were you thinking?" Lea said again, "Are we so unimportant to you that you’re willing to just leave us behind?"
This made him freeze as he realized how stupid and inconsiderate his decision had been.
He had been so excited about finally having a family, yet he was putting himself at risk of losing them.
"..."
All he could say, in response to that, was, "I’m sorry," again.
Lea then turned silent as she stayed in his hug for a while, before she finally managed to calm down.
"Thank you for saving me," Liam said again after a while.
"Hmm," she simply nodded before moving back and looking at him, "what were you doing?"
Liam was silent as he closed his eyes and felt the pragma flowing within his body. Surprisingly, the container he was creating around his heart was now properly complete and even reinforced.
The Pragma within it wasn’t multiplying more than needed, and everything else was quite stable, which meant that the Pragma battery was now completed.
He then opened his eyes and smiled, "I was making a Pragma battery."
Lea seemed a bit confused until she recalled what Ada had been talking about back in the lab.
But when she had imagined a Pragma battery, she imagined some sort of physical object, so how the hell had that caused his heart to explode?
Seeing her confusion, he explained, "I used my heart as a Pragma battery...but things didn’t end up going as intended."
"..." Lea looked at him with a blank expression before she let out a sigh and stood back up.
"You couldn’t use any other organ?" She asked with a blank expression, "like one of your kidneys or something."
"Well..." Liam placed a hand on his chin, trying to come up with an answer, "that’d probably lead to me poisoning myself if something went wrong."
Besides, he wouldn’t feel like a cultivation novel MC otherwise... but he wisely chose not to tell her that.
"..."
Lea looked at him for a while, certain that there was another reason, but she didn’t press him.
"Shower," she said instead as she turned around, "there’s blood all over you."
"Yes, ma’am," Liam said with a smile as he watched her walk towards the door before stopping.
"If you try to kill yourself again, I’ll kill you myself."
Liam chuckled in response as he nodded, "I won’t."
